If Nokia decided to put their energy and resources to the MeeGo OS instead of Windows, the mobile phone landscape today would have been very different. Nokia's hiring of Stephen Elop really messed things up for the Finnish tech giant.

Meego might have been very good but it didn't have an app ecosystem which is what matters. Windows phone was actually a good os as well; it had more developer support than Meego but still not enough to compete with the big 2. Timing was the issue. If they could have gotten off the ground just a year or two sooner either one of these OS's might still be around.

In summary, minimal and symmetric is the way to go. I think HMD tried to incorporate this design language once but never did it again; look at the original NOKIA 5; it gives these vibes too and feels really good in the hand (if only internals were good as well).

      And then I bought a 7.2...
And then I never bought a Nokia phone again.
      Farewell Nokia.
After 15 years of Nokia devices HMD managed to achieve what not even the downfall of Windows Phone could have done: I'm disappointed. Poor android and software implementation, bad cameras. And so I will most likely never buy a Nokia phone again.

Nokia should definitely bring back this design. High-end or the midrange ones. Its classic and timeless vibe will never fade. The Meego OS also has that same vibe compared to other OS/UI. My last Nokia was Nokia 6.1 which I loved and its still running.
Aside from Nokia, Samsung S8/S9 and Note 20 series design also has that vibe. S10 and the succeeding models looks pretty but normal.

From the "newer" phones I always loved Lumia phones. My most favorite designs from some brands are:
    - Nokia N9 and Lumia 950XL
    - HTC MAX 4G, One M7, M8, M9+ and One Max
    - Samsung S7 Edge, S8+ and S9+, Note 8, Note 9 and A80
    - Lg G2, G Flex, G6, V30 and Wing
    - Sony Xperia ZL, XZ3, 1 and Pro-I
    And so on. . .
If I would have to pick one phone from each brand in terms of best design it would be like this:
    - Apple iPhone 5s
    - Asus Zenfone 8 Flip
    - Google Pixle 4XL
    - Honor Note 8
    - HTC M9+
    - Huawei Mate 10 Pro
    - Lenovo Z5 Pro GT
    - LG G6
    - Meizu 16 Plus
    - Microsoft Lumia 950XL
    - Motorola Edge X30 (version with under display camera)
    - Nokia N9
    - OnePlus 7 Pro
    - Oppo Find X
    - Realme X
    - Samsung Galaxy S9+

My favourite Phone outright ever. What could have been. Described as the last unicorn beast. Fun fact, the N9 owes its design to a Swedish word lagom. Simply translated it means not to little and not to much but just enough. And that ties in very well with the amazing Dieter rams, who we all know was the direct inspiration for Jonny Ive. Dieter can be seen in many Apple products such as the iPod having the same general design as the Braun micro radio. Even in meego dieters philosophy can be seen. It's just a shame the world was simply not ready for the N9 and Nokia just wasn't in a position to carry on with meego. I still have my white N9 and white Lumia 800. You knocked it out the park with this video. Excellent!!!!!!!!

The Nokia N9 was my absolute favorite phone of all time. Though I was spoiled a little bit in that I actually started out with an N950 first, the N9’s secretive, but still very cool development brother. What made it cool was that it was a clam shell design that hid a very usable keyboard, very similar to the Nokia E7, though it ran the same terrific MeeGO’s OS we all loved, if not too briefly. So much so that I have been keeping that dream alive with an unexpected Sony Xperia™ 10 II, running Sailfish. An OS based that is based on the dead carcass of MeeGO’s and it surprisingly very good. Just wish more phones would be ported to it, none the less, Jolla, the firm behind this endeavor, is doing everything they can to make that happen.

Awesome video. The trademark of Lumia design is that they resemble a pillow with a beautiful curved glass. If only they had android back then. They would still be around now. HMD are making boring boxy designs nowadays 😬😬😬

I fell in love with N9 first time it came out and all the innovations that it carries, i got the Blue one, wish Meego could have been continued. I guess htc's m7 carries the same X factor like the N9. Nowadays everybody wants to look like an iPhone or a Samsung.. except the pixel 6 🤔

I still have my N9, and a Lumia 920!! The N9 works perfect, and every time I use it, I still wonder why it's design has never been used in another phone, it's so smooth and hassle free!! My 920 however, is in need of a new screen, it opens apps by itself lol.

    Your work is exceptional.
Nokia need to know whom they are but not what they want to be come. The Nokia Lumia phones are more greater than the android phone, specially the operating system is strong. When it comes to the android phones that Nokia is building becomes weak when you use it for a year forward, you start to experience weak network signal and sometimes it delays when you switch on the data and also the phones freeze's. Thank you sir.

Yes. Yes. Yes! Yes!!! Lumia was the peak of smartphone hardware and software innovation and design. 100% agree with what you said, the only reason I left WP was because it died in 2016 with the introduction of WM10 and the 950 and 950XL in 2017

Very rightly said, and it's so great to see this video at a point when I have been frustrated buying a new phone. I needed a new phone, and for the past few weeks, I have been just frustrated seeing the design and specifications of phone..Why can't we keep things simple with minimalistic designs..Those were the good old days with Nokia Lumia with all the minimalistic UIs, and the designs were just a please to the eyes. Nowadays, all we see are fancy UIs and all the generic designs. As a small request from the audience I would ask for some suggestions of phone in India in the range of 20,000 with design which can at least feel good to have.

Fabula design is always a great design, I like the design on Nokia N8, E7, and X7-00 too. I missed the time when design was a thing differentiate a brand from others. HMD should stop assign ODM for designing their smartphones. A Nokia must looks like a Nokia, with a design that make it stand out from the crowd!

I would sell my kidney to be able to hold a current Lumia-esque device in my hand. I'm no enthusiast by any means but I remember getting the Lumia simply because of the looks and nothing else. Once it broke down I just liked to hold it from time to time. Got myself a Lumia 800 two years ago just to start it up every once in a while and enjoy it.

I'd always wanted a N9 but couldn''t afford one at the time. I still run a Nokia 8 from 2017 which -at least- shares some of the design language. The only downside is lack of updates and screen burn-in (which is reversible).

I absolutely loved the Nokia Lumia series, they had that worthy feeling plastic that also came in the coolest colours you can imagine (especially the yellow). And that strongly curves glass also made it feel perfect, like it was made out of one piece. But I didn’t buy it because it used windows phone but on the other side if it would have use android, it wouldn’t really fit with the design of the phone.
