    I love you, Andrew but I VEHEMENTLY am AT WAR with your take about the pickups. Yes, they are very low output, but I think that provides so much clarity in chords, and if you wanna turn the gain super high on whatever your using, you can without fear of loss of integrity of the signal.
    I think the pickups purr SO GOOD on distorted channels, too. Idk probably my favorite guitar I own at the moment.

      I agree with u to some extent. I think that high output pickups are better in a mix, but on their own, I agree with you. I have an ibanez with s-58 jazz pickups in them that sound amazing for distortion by themselves, for practice. In a mix, they get drowned out though, but they sound amazing for practice. I have a PRS with mark holcomb’s in them, which a high output, that sound amazing for cleans in practice, but not so much distortion. However, they sound amazing for distortion in a mix.

    • @EversonBernardes
      @EversonBernardes 3 года назад +45

      Low output pickups? Put virtually any EQ pedal in the signal path, crank the output gain, problem solved. Literally. Use a good EQ pedal and you get both the benefit of having a nice buffer and the flexibility of tone shaping, too.
      High output pickups are completely unecessary AND usually sound worse, more compressed, with hollow highs, clean.

    Low to medium output pickups tend to work great on super high gain amps, especially if you boost and tune low as fuck. Low output pickups also work best with active internal preamps.

    • @EversonBernardes
      @EversonBernardes 3 года назад +11

      Low output pickups tend to be more dynamic and have better high frequency response, so tighter, livelier chugs with really low tunings. As you said, an internal preamp or even just an EQ pedal first thing in the signal path can boost the output and get you all the distortion you want (plus additional tone shaping capabilities and some great buffering).

    Question here - why did you have to compensate in the VST with a +6dB boost? Usually whenever I start tracking guitar I make sure that my audio interface is set up with the input gain set correctly. I do this with every guitar since thy have different ranges of output. And the reason why you would want to do that is simple - when switching vst plugins say from gojira to nolly or tse or whatever, your sound capture would still be at the right input value. I think the guitar sounds sick I would not change anything about it. But yeah it also depends how much postprocessing you know you had to do. If you did substantial cuts then i get it.

    2nd time I've heard of these under high gain for metal. They are neat. I think for 600-700 chapman has 2 baritones available. The ml1 standard and the ml3 Bea standard. Would love to hear you jam on one of those

  • @Lectwar6
    @Lectwar6 3 года назад +2

    I picked up this guitar just over a month ago and I love it. The comments on the string crosstalk are true tho. I will say the pickups weren't as big of a deal to me and maybe its something with his guitar. They are lower output if youre used to active pickups but they werent so bad that it made me look at the guitar differently. I have several guitars and all of them have such wildly different output levels that having to turn one up in my DAW to me is a non issue.
    I will say that for 599 i challenge you to find a guitar with better build quality. the components, fit, and finish are immaculate. The guitar feels great, the fretwork is better than my $900 ibanez, the body is comfortable, and the guitar had 0 blemishes.

  • @BSBBandFitness
    @BSBBandFitness 2 месяца назад

    I have this guitar. Had it for about 2 months. I have an agile 8 string and this guitar hits all the lows with way better pickups than the stock agile. So I can’t even complain about the pickups. But this guitar is my favorite. Hits all the heavy notes crisp as hell

    Looking at the surrounds of the mini humbuckers, it looks like they've routed put enough space around the pickup to be able to drop a full-size humbucker in place? Obviously correct me if I'm wrong, I've not seen one in person but the actual routing around the pickups does look particularly oversized

  • @maxsahni6349
    @maxsahni6349 2 года назад +1

    If you are looking for pickup replacements I believe Seymour Duncan makes their own variant of the Gretsch pickups. The Seymour Duncan Psyclone might be a good fit. The Full’tron or Broad’tron might also be good. I haven’t really compared their dimensions however.
    If you just wanna keep it, I have heard of people placing foam under the pickups to raise the height, or adjusting string gauges.
    But I know this was over a year ago so I’m curious if you ended up selling it or how you ended up modifying it.

    As for input gain.. don't you just put the gain up on the input of your audio interface? And the pickups routings look like they might be big enough for standard humbuckers? I don't know why they would route them that size otherwise?

    • @trunks828
      @trunks828 Год назад +1

      I second that the fret board feels kinda cheap it needs to be leveled crowed and polished sand the back of the neck with 320 grit sand paper than use steel wool and put a small amount a bees wax to give it a nice smooth finish. Than the electronics need a update new pots jack switches the pickups are okay but a good set of Duncan’s will go far and long ways for this. End with replacing the tuners the stock ones suck big time any locking tuners will do
