I totally agree with many of the points attributed to Colin. I think the freeze rule in rally scoring is a lame idea. Name any other sport where the winning team is not allowed to score points once they reach some threshold. This rule is touted as being a good idea since it gives the losing team a chance to catch up and create more excitement. I don't find it exciting at all. In order to find it exciting you have to forget that the winning team is being penalized for being better. The losing team is not making a come-back. They are just benefitting from a rules quirk that was probably developed by a group of losers. Who else would think to stop the winning team from scoring points at the end of a match? I also agree with the "team" portion of the comments. This isn't like other sports where players are substituted in and out at will, or play at specialized positions. Basically all that's happening here is that a group of players are playing games, and their separate success is grouped at the end and compared to other groupings of separate games.
There is a lot of good points here. I would agree with his take on scoring, freeze is a horrible mechanic. They switched to rally scoring to make it more exciting, but then had to introduce freeze because rally scoring meant teams could never make a late comeback! Dreambreakers are also weird, when 95% of the MLP is doubles to suddenly have matches decided by singles which your draftees may not even play regularly is pretty random. Having strong and weak players on the same teams is a tricky one, it is hard to balance teams without having this to some extent. MLP has gone for the standard US format of trying to make teams equal where possible, rather than the format you see in much of the world in many sports where some teams are just much stronger than others. I feel it is very hard for the top men. Someone like ALW playing with a 'weaker' man is still a balanced team overall, but Ben playing with a 'weaker' lady is very one sided and much more easy to exploit. The teams with the best ladies would probably have a huge advantage it seems. Ultimately this is a singles or doubles game, do we really need teams? If they are desperate for something that isn't just more PPA tournaments then perhaps they have some singles and doubles leagues, they play out in the MLP weekend slots and players and pairs can move up and down a division for the next meet up depending on how they do. You would get the top 4-5 players or pairs in the top division all playing each other so you'd get all the best possible matches and upcoming players would have a chance to move up rankings without having to negotiate random bad draws in PPA where they get repeatedly knocked out in the round of 32 by a 1 or 2 seed.
I agree with increased poor player attitudes and the increased unsportsmanlike behaviors…..it affects overall quality of play…….this should be addressed.
All sports team owners are turning players into actors. MLP is taking it too far with a quirky rule system penalizing players for dominating a sport. These folks are trying too hard to monetize the sport . Just chill and listen to your players who have real skin in the game
MLP wasn’t created for the pro players or really even amateur players who might watch. It’s a money maker for people who aren’t on the court (who share that money with the athletes to be fair). That’s not totally bad because it brought influential, connected, and knowledgeable people together to invest in pickleball and make it more popular. In the end though, there’s really no reason for having teams beyond doubles partners. As the fan base grows, there will eventually be a realization among the fans that the team format is just kind of silly.
A fair amount of the players enjoy MLP, but most people I know barely follow it and have no rooting interest in any of the teams. It's a waste of time imho.
Nail on the head, I only hear good things about MLP from players, not so much from viewers. As someone who watches a ton of pickleball I still have minimal interest in watching full matches online tbh. It looks like a ton of fun being a part of it in person as a spectator or player.
CJ is so frustrated...agree with balls and lights issues and scheduling that Navratil adresses in an other vlog. But the reality is that CJ would probably not part of Mlp if it wasnt for Ben... there s new comers, younger, more talented that brings excitement to the sport...accept it and stop complaining
I agree with Colin besides 1 and 3. If a team drafted wisely and strategically, they would be able to compete as a team. Just for example the 5’s, I didn’t know about Howells and Humberg until MLP, but then they went all the way to the finals with those two. How about Kate Fahey? I don’t know her until MLP, and she became a top tier player. This is called smart drafting. Don’t blame the league for your drafting mistakes. This was a dumb argument by Colin. But I agree with him especially the freeze. I hate that too and they should abolish this scoring system. But for reals Colin, if you ain’t happy, then just stay home. Don’t bash the league, a lot of people actually enjoy watching MLP!
If the sport becomes as uninspiring as a Floyd Mayweather match, no matter how skilled you are, people won’t tune in, and your earnings as a pro will decline. Spectator sports are fundamentally about entertainment, and as a professional pickleball player, you need to recognize that you’re part of the entertainment industry. If you believe you can create a more exciting league, then go ahead and start your own.
I think MLP and it's format is absolutely stupid. I can't get into it at all. Stop trying to make pickleball like every other pro sport. We don't need another team oriented sport. Pickleball is best when played like the APP and PPA format. If I wanted to watch a team oriented sport, I'll stick with MLB, NFL, and the NBA.
@kmp101 PPA runs tournaments where players' success is down to their skill & performance; MLP runs team events despite it being a singles & doubles sport, and success & even being picked to a team is down to a lot of other factos besides your performance: who you know, for example.
His very first point is utterly idiotic, both in terms of Pickleball and in his analogy about the rich. I do like the point freeze, but the trialing team's score should be frozen at a lower point.
@@kmp101 I don't dislike rich people at all if they have made their money from legitimate businesses. In fact, the business people in the US and in other free nations have made our nations the freest and most prosperous nations in history _by a long shot_ . My objection to his comment has to do with the fact that rich people are definitely not carrying their share of the load in our country. For example, when Mitt Romney ran for president he paid the same tax rate as I did. He made 12 million dollars that year; I made $40,000. There are too many ways for the rich not to pay their fair share of taxes. and when you consider the fact that all other taxes, aside from the income tax, present a heavier load on low income people than they do on the rich, then it's not only completely unfair, it's also antithetical to a successful economy in general. Another problem is that so many people nowadays get rich either by inheritance or by running scams. or in Donald Trump's case, both. more than half of the billionaires in this country inherited huge amounts of money. and if you ever watch RUclips, if you're at all observant and have any ability to think critically, you can't help but notice that about 80% of the ads on there are for complete scams. That certainly doesn't help our economy and those rich people I do hate. As for whether I'd like to be rich: of course I would! wouldn't everybody? However, although I'm very able at a lot of things, making money is certainly not one of them. That is entirely on me; I blame no one else for that. But thanks to a long history of successful business in this country I'm able to lead a good life, despite my own shortcomings in the business world. Actually, I'm quite grateful for the successful and honest businesses in this country, And those people very much deserve to be rich.
Shifting to a team event like a Dreambreaker format is entertaining for fans, and fans bring advertising that pays the salaries. So you can take a few of his remarks in the same light as a hockey player blaming the draft and weaker players for why they don't always win. Close matches stimulate fan interest and balanced teams makes that more likely and consistent. It's a team game. Get over it and remember how lucky you are to be there.
The game is literally Nerfed to make it more beginner friendly and forces you to let the ball bounce so that u don’t have an advantage while serving, and you are surprised they made rules that help the underdogs? Yes the freeze rule is bad. MLP wants excitement but what they got was a rigged system.
Freeze rule helps to mask the arbitrary & inexplicable biases in team selection.

ALW is a little jerk on the court. A little playful taunting is ok with me, but ALW is mean spirited
The MLP’s format was designed for viewership (money generation) not for fairness of the players.
