As a long term(18 years), British born, and very content resident of The Costa Blanca here in Spain, I would like to add a couple of salient points to those already expressed. Firstly, as a "Senior" resident now(I am 74 and partially disabled) I am treated with dignity and respect, unlike London(U.K.) where I lived for 12 years and where all too often, I was met with irritation, ridicule, even downright rudeness. Admittedly I live in a small, mostly Spanish "Pueblo" and cannot peak for major urban centres here, but the culture in Spain is just very different and respect for others is ingrained from a very early age. In truth in 18 years here, I have Never felt to be at risk or vulnerable here. Secondly is "The way/pace of life" in Spain. What many foreigners may not realise is that the Spanish work the most hours per week of any country in Europe, yet seem to have a far better "Work/Life" balance than virtually any other "First World" country. There is very little social pressure here to drive the most expensive cars, or wear currently, the most fashionable designer labels. Such things are simply unimportant to most Spaniards. So stress levels from the need to compete, are very much lower. I have listed just two examples which are difficult to equate in financial terms, but which are nevertheless important to me, regarding my life here in Spain... Viva Espana..!!!
To be honest - to this day i don´t understand why the majority of americans don´t angrily revolt against the massive looting commited by the Pharma and Healthcare Insurance Companies.
Plenty of people in the US get up in arms about drug price regulation (that's socialism!) or health care for all (that's socialism!). For me, give me some socialism please because this rampant capitalism is like the game of Monopoly where at the end only a 1 or 2 people have the all the money and everyone else is broke.
@@terribreed7637 The US does not have rampant capitalism not even close. Our Pharma and Food are controlled by special interests who finance campaigns of both parties. We live in an Oligarchy where the top 1% do not care what happens to the others. Currently we have social media influencing our lives and an election witholding or putting out fake news to make us vote a certain way. The sooner we get rid of the cult running this country the better or we are finished as a country. Obama care is certainly socialism , drug prices are controlled by special interest groups. Follow the Money
@@terribreed7637socialism is not the solution, but the grip Big Pharma has on US citizens is outrageous. For starters, the problem with the military industrial complex funneling millions of dollars elsewhere, when you guys so desperately need the money. I don’t even think they’d need to raise taxes to have a propper healthcare system. It’s ridiculous that you pay 800€ for insulin when in Europe, the same Pharma costs 30€. It’s a scam and I blame the rampant corruption. The political system goes on commission and they have linked in the minds of Americans that not having healthcare is a matter of freedom. It has nothing to do with freedom. In fact, the Spanish Healthcare System was created by Franco, yes, the Dictator. So I think this goes beyond anything political and it’s basic human rights. I often wonder if you have such bad life expectancy because there’s no preventive medicine in the US. Here, you see how our elders go constantly to the Doctor, often times just to complain a little and feel listened. Is such a different paradigm. But don’t fool yourself, we have other problems here and some very dangerous that are putting everything we have in jeopardy. But the root cause is always the same, political corruption. I hope people stand up for what’s right and come together because the enemy, I can assure you, it’s not amongst us.
My partner arrived from New York more than 30 years ago, after all these years he's still confident and happy with his decision. Good luck with your new life.
Regarding health service, you can have both, private and public, which I recommend. For day to day staff, go private if you don't like waiting. For serious health issues, check also the public service. Just a recommendation.
Hey, welcome to Spain. I noticed that you mentioned supermarkets a few times but you didn’t say anything about local markets where you can buy fresh fruit and veg from open stalls outdoors. My local market is open on Sundays in the town square and me and my partner go every week to buy the week’s fruit and veg. Before the market we have breakfast (empanadilla y cafe con leche) at a local cafe. The quality of produce at the market is always outstanding, far superior to a supermarket, and the prices are lower. In the summer it gets very busy as the place I live is a tourist hotspot, but for most of the year it’s very quiet with hardly any queues and a great selection of produce.

Hello and thank you for such a great video! I Can TOTALLY relate, and agree, to what you are saying!💯💯💯 In MY humble opinion, this topic is ALL about a VERY personal choice and journey for each one of us. I visited Spain for the first time in 2015 and IMMEDIATELY fell in LOVE with the people, the food, the beauty of the land, the culture, etc.!!! Spain is literally in my DNA!! My great, great, grandparents were from Catalonia and Gran Canaria. I was born in Cuba, but my parents left when communism took over the island. I grew up in a suburb of Chicago from the age of 4. I LOVE the US, however, in my humble opinion, once you experience Spain, you do NOT want to go back to living the American lifestyle! Every country has their pros and cons, however, for ME, the pros for Spain, outweighs the cons! The peace, security, quality of life and quality of food in Spain, in MY opinion, is TOP notch!! I'm approaching my 60th birthday and DREAM of living an early retirement in Ourense Spain! I'm fluent in Spanish and would have ZERO problems fitting in!! God bless you and keep those great videos coming!❤
I've been planning my move to Spain for the last two years. We will move right after my retirement in December 2025. Either Seville or Valencia. I speak Spanish, so I will be in my environment.
Exist one thing called air conditioned, just for july and august and the rest of the year good weather and temperature!!😍😍😍😍😍😍 Seville is amazing!! and my mother is from seville and my father is from Valencia and I was born in Málaga!! that´s is may experience.
Hi Eric! I’m a spaniard and I love your videos and how you point at the quality of life as one of the strongest points for living here. I’d like to add to that the fact that there are no classes. I’ll explain. We all come together to the bars and “terrazas”. You see employees and bosses eating together the cheap menu at the bar. People join to watch football, from all ages and social classes. Even speaking about social class sounds weird for me. Lawyers, doctors, cleaners join and sit at the bar for breakfast and discuss the latest news, the state of country and so on. They’ll share jokes and then go their way. That’s why the bar is so instrumental if you really want to integrate in the community. And if you have doubts, ask anyone. The most probable is that they go walk with you to your destination if you ask for directions. Good luck to everyone and I hope you live long and happy lives.
He visitado Cadiz, Pamplona, Bilbao y los Pirineos.
Enjoyed your video. I studied in Spain many years ago and am considering moving back even as a senior citizen. If I can make a suggestion: for your video is the background music distracted from your message, as I struggled to focus on your voice. Was too loud for your voice. Great information and again hope this will help me make that scary decision. Thanks for sharing.
This was a good video. It was a very thoughtful comparison of the most important reasons to move from the US to Spain. Although the points you've made are applicable for many countries in Europe. I say this as a Brit who lives in rural Portugal. Although I work (remotely) with American colleagues and clients in the States (Texas/California) every day of the week and have worked in the US in the past (Atlanta, NYC and up-state New York) I'd never be tempted to move there for the reasons that you've highlighted. Quality of life is, in my humble opinion, superior in this part of the world. It's less stressful, healthier and you have time to enjoy your life with less pressure, worry and stress.
I live in Denver. It’s not only the cost of living, but imo,and having lived in different states, Denver has little to offer for the price tag. I am a coastal person and miss being by the ocean. Congratulations! Have a wonderful life in Spain!
This is an honest question. When I hear/see Americans talk about living at the coast it often seems like the only valid choices are LA or Miami. The US has a lot of coast, and it's not like the weather is bad everywhere else, so why aren't the rest of coastal places more valued? What is wrong with all the coast in between NY and Miami, or to the North of LA?
I am from Malaga but living abroad (Germany). I am actually jealous you managed to move to my hometown, such an amazing quality of life. By the picture, looks like La cala above the highway. You need a car though, but great choice!
Because of the color of the sea and the sky (also because of the tower that can be seen in the background) you live in La Cala de Mijas. You should also mention that North Americans have their consulate a few kilometers away (Fuengirola). Regards from Marbella
Full of good advice for those folks who find themselves struggling in the sociopolitical culture that the USA promotes. You've chosen Spain, but there are in fact numerous countries whose normal lifestyle is a step up from what many US citizens suffer. Best wishes to you.
Thanks for your very nice and reaffirming video. I have been researching moving from the USA due to, not only the unending hustle and bustle, but the political environment that is sadly on the verge of crumbling our society and our democracy. I wish you continuing happiness and low stress life!
@@freelancelady I understand and agree that there are many “issues”, not only in Spain but in just about any other corner of the world. However, there are more “pluses” that seem to make it overall worthwhile. I happen to have Spanish descent on both sides of my family (great grandparents). At this stage of my life (I’m turning 70 in two weeks), It would be nice to explore and experience something new, that is worthwhile. Best wishes to you, and yours!
Cerveza a 1,5 2 euros ,tapas....
Great video. I am happy to see you probably made a great choice. There are another point 6 I think. ! You can travel to different countries in 2/4 hours or less !!!!! Europe is full of beautifull places.
@@AmericaToSpainThose days are not a gift, Paid holidays are a right... You have already worked them in advance and then you have the right to use them as holidays (that's because working 40 hours a week you make more hours than the ones you need to fulfill your mandatory 1.800 yearly working hours). In the USA way, workers take the money of those hours in excess instead of the holidays... or other way of saying this... if you take some holidays then you don't make money... or, in your way of thinking, you lose that money. The question is easy... what do you prefer?
Regarding the public national healthcare service, it's much better than the private one for serious matters (cancer, emergencies, rare diseases, difficult births, etc) and you should always go there first if you want better service, better doctors, etc.
I loved your video. I’m a Spaniard that lives in Madrid. Shops and supermarkets are open 7 days a week here in Madrid, and that could also include New Year’s day too; I’d also disagree on “working here is relax”, well that depends. Some of us also work longer hours (unfortunately). Anyway, thanks for sharing your thoughts. You nailed it 99% =)
Hi, sorry for the late reply. Thank you for your comment. I agree that if you work locally there can also be a large amount of stress. Thank you for your kind words and your correction. I will make sure to take it into account for my next videos.
I relate to what he says. I am 60 years old and I have now diabetes. Although it is manageable and not expensive I think nothing beats living in Europe where you don’t get broke over medical expenses. Food is more natural over there, some foods in the States are totally unhealthy. The problem relates also to the stress of life you experience in the States. Don’t get me wrong. Spaniards work very hard but the cut their day in half so you have at least a couple hours for lunch…going back to work from 4 pm to about 8pm. Also they have more holidays and at least one month vacation a year. The reason I moved to the States back in 1987 was because my husband is American and he had a stable situation. Back then there were fewer job opportunities in Europe in general, except in places like Germany, Holland and England. I was young and I wanted financial stability. Buy now I would not mind going back except that now I have a family in the States and it is important as you grow older to be close to family. And I still think Spain does not offer many job opportunities except for those who are working in healthcare, new technologies and computer systems. So being young and wanted that job security was important for me back then…it was another time and another life…
When I traveled the USA and Canada I usually paid quite a bit more in food. Be it restaurants or supermarkets, especially because in the USA you have to add sales tax and it's almost mandatory to pay 20% tip. In Europe vat is included in the prices, and Tip isn't mandatory, you pay a tip when you are satisfied, and not usually 20%, rather around 10% as rule of thumb.
I have been taking Spanish lessons from a lady who lives in Burgos, Spain and I explained to her that in the US we can have huge medical bills if we get sick. She was horrified! She said something like "I can't imagine the stress of feeling like I can't afford to get sick, while being sick. It would make life so much harder!" and she is 100% correct. Not only do you have to think "I am sick and I need to get better" but you also have to think "How am I going to pay for this?!". Unless you have FU money, you are 1 bad illness away from medical bankruptcy if you live in the US.

Jetas!

So if you don’t mind me asking, as a US citizen don’t you have to come back every 90 days or would you be considered illegal? Or is there some type of visa for retired people. Thank you for the great info.
To think that one of the reasons for longevity in this country is no financial stress… we should be living over 150+ years then. Must be nice living with an American salary in Spain though
Yes that helps. Salaries in Spain are not that great🤔 But nowadays there are a lot of remote job opportunities. I'm working on a video on how to get a remote job. Ill be posting it soon. Thank you so much for your comment.
Hi Eric, thank you for your video, it’s truly filled with valuable information. Lately I’ve been watching many videos for I’m in the process to moving from the US to Spain, for the same EXACT reason you described. I’ll be traveling shortly (Malaga, Alicante) to obtain my DNI and start from there. What area of Malaga are you living at? Again Thank you for your detailed and well intentioned video. You have a new subscriber. Take care. Pete
... and definetly... if you have a free health system that allows you to go to the doctor for any issue or any worry without the fear of seeing the bill... you live longer.😁
Hi, I'm planning on moving to Spain as I'm spanish citizen, in about 1 year or so, I want to bring personal items, like books, records, photo albums, not furniture or TVs , which method of freight cargo is the best to use?
I just sold everything and just a backpack. And duffel bag. Stored my books I wanted to keep at familly. Each time I visted take back with me little by little. And electricity is different here. And different plugs.
I’m glad it’s cheaper for you. But Málaga has become very expensive for locals thanks to airbnbs and higher income foreigners moving there. Your “half the rent of Denver” is way too high for locals. You’re also contributing to feeding the private health care industry (a monster US citizens know all too well). Be aware that locals will eventually resent you a lot (which is already happening).
@@AmericaToSpain Don’t contribute to the problem, then. Be happy there, but stop selling it here like it’s a retirement paradise for higher-income-than-Spaniars foreigners.
Americans make a farce of whereever they land . A cartoonish view on " moving" , and ALWAYS monetizing their SHIT. Yes , this Ami contributes to a problem and has NO clue of Spain whatsoever. Their very presence on Spain s territory is IMMEDIATELY OBSESSIVELY commuted into a business model of which the basic tenet is the assumption that a Merrican never leaves their land let alone for socialist Europe. But hey , that unexpected move , based on a flimsy expedient commitment via a digital worker visa is enough substance to get the stressed out Merrican at home click on their heroic move as well as pander to naive Spaniards who revel in the fact that the Merrican " loves the lifestyle " and " the food" and " you can visit 10 countries on foot in two days" .. .. it is just bitterly annoying putting that in the perspective of the sadistic immigration machinations of that us , for those who seek a genuine permanent residence on sound uncartoonish assumptions .
I live in Malaga. If you are from the US and you pay taxes in the US you don't have to pay taxes here. I'm not an expert on taxes but there are workarounds.
Hi. Thanks for the response. If you have a certain amount of assests, spain taxes you a small percentage on that in addition to income taxes. It's called the wealth tax....
The same problem we two countries share is the strong or even deep political/social division. Lefts and rights and those things. If both countries could join its own population instead of divide more and more, Both would be much more strong and happy
Hello Friend, I enjoyed your video. Thank you.👏 I would like to bring to your attention that the background music is a bit high and distracting. Cheers and enjoy your journey. Last year, we were in Malaga for a month and we enjoyed our visit.
I'm going to re-formulate my comment: Have you ever asked yourself why millions of latinamericans want to be free and risk their lives to go to the US? Have you ever asked yourseft why Florida is full of Cuban and Venezuelan people? Have you ever asked yourself why the biggest dream of almost every Spaniard is to live in the US? In a few years, you will be beggin to go back to the US. I left Spain for good and my life is way better now.
I´m sorry to disagree, but I seriously doubt that many Spaniards would like to live permanently in US. For sure in other parts of Europe, but US, no way. And regarding Cubans and Venezuelans, well, obviously anything is better than where they come from.
Hi Angel, thank you for your comment. I will not be begging to go back to the US, I promise you. The US has some great things and salary is definitely one of them. But you get to a point in life where money is not everything. Plus now, you can work in the US, while living in Spain. The US will drain your life and you will be brained washed to be a consumer. You will be taught that consuming is the only way to be happy and that is neve the case. Life is Spain is very different.
@@alepunto7404That’s not true. I’m rich, I earn more than seven times the average salary in Spain, I never had a private insurance. Everytime I needed health care I’ve been atended by our national health service with good results, high technology and nice human asistence . Even my brother needed a lungh transplant and was succesfully fulfilled paying CERO euro. Compare that to USA. And do not lie about socialist politicians, thanks to them we have this incredible public service. Conservative parties don’t believe so much in our system and always try through low investment in public services to push people into private insurances wich is like shooting your toe.
@@felixcanas9446 Sorry, but half of your comment is not true, and the other half is you talking about your particular case. Rich people don´t go to public hospitals, they go to private clinics, here and abroad. Socialist politicians when need healthcare, go to private clinics (like Carmen Calvo at Clinica Ruber, or Dolores Delgado at Clinica Cemtro). Basically anyone that can afford private healthcare, choose private over public, even if that implies paying both, as paying public healthcare in Spain in mandatory. If your brother paid cero euros, that doesn´t mean that healthcare is free. It is not. If your brother paid nothing, it means that other people were forced to pay the treatment of your brother with taxes. Because that argument that says that in Spain healthcare is free and expensive in the USA, if you think a little about it, makes no sense at all. ¿What do you mean, that doctors and nurses do not have a salary in Spain? ¿Hospitals do not require maintenance? All those things are paid by all of us with taxes. The wrong picture of healthcare being "free" or cheap in Spain comes from the fact that the state takes half of the salary of everyone even before that salary reaches the worker, complemented with all the rest of different taxes (over 100!) that the state uses to squeeze us. So no, services like healthcare or education are not free or cheap in Spain, we are just forced to use the ones that the policians decide. They took away our freedom to choose. Also, you seem to mix up "public" with "universal". A service guaranteed to everyone is an "universal" service. A "public" service is just a service controlled by politicians. And this is why private healthcare or private education are always better than public ones. Because private services are managed by professionals of that sector, but public services are managed by politicians, wich are usually corrupt, inept, and they only care about themselves. But it is totally possible to have private universal healthcare, or private universal education (like in the nordic countries). We don´t benefit from having public services, the only beneficiaries from services being public are the politicians, as they use this power for their political goals. And you should learn a little history. The public health system in Spain exists since 1908, so no, we don´t have it thanks to socialists. That is another lie coming from the PSOE, like when they say that they "invented feminism" (yes, they said that).

If you are only basing your life off of RUclips earnings, that would be good to know as well. Appreciate it.

Yeah, it should at least be as difficult for an American to move to Spain as it is for a Spaniard to move to the US. I doubt a Spaniard could move to the US on a digital nomad visa.
@gabrielanaya677 I know that. And Spain has an open border too. As an American, you could just come in on a holiday visa and stay there. The issue is then being illegal, which nobody would want. My point was the *legal* methods of gaining a work visa are easier USA->Spain than in the opposite direction

Hi Tromau1, Sorry for replying this late. I agree with you 100% but to be clear, my target for the video is people from the United States. For them, they live in America. If i want a US person to watch my video, I have to speak their language. If this video was for Spanish people I would have done it in Spanish. In their "language" they live in America. Feel free to ask questions about moving to Spain here in the comments. I apologize for the music being so loud. Trying to fix it.
No repetitive music needed, would rather hear you talk.
As a long term(18 years), British born, and very content resident of The Costa Blanca here in Spain, I would like to add a couple of salient points to those already expressed. Firstly, as a "Senior" resident now(I am 74 and partially disabled) I am treated with dignity and respect, unlike
London(U.K.) where I lived for 12 years and where all too often, I was met with irritation, ridicule, even downright rudeness.

They’re too busy protesting about trans rights, you know? Important stuff

Thank you very much for your comments. I agree that people don't care about your class. Its really great.

You are right!
Thank you.

Yes, Spain is a great country to move to. You should really consider it
When I traveled the USA and Canada I usually paid quite a bit more in food.
Agreed. The issue with tipping in the US has become crazy.

Great content and spot on observation.
Thank you for your comment
Jetas!

What private HC insurance company did you end up going with btw? Curious. A lot of choices! Thanks..
SANITAS but there are many others
Sanitas. Sorry to the late reply.
How does the food compare between the US and Spain? You must feel healthier here!
the thing is that many of the pesticides and herbicides are banned in Europe. Meat isn't washed in chlorine
Can you talk about expenses in detail ? Rent US vs Rent Spain and etc ??
I will do. I'm working on a video about the cost of living. If you would like to join I am doing a Live Stream this Sunday August 4th at 2 pm EST time. Here is the Link: ruclips.net/user/livekQegwoUop-8?feature=share
@@AmericaToSpain Sorry that I'm seeing this message a little too late, but how can I help?
So if you don’t mind me asking, as a US citizen don’t you have to come back every 90 days or would you be considered illegal? Or is there some type of visa for retired people. Thank you for the great info.
You can come on the digital nomad visa. I will be doing a video on how to get the visa. Follow my channel for an update.

@@AmericaToSpainI will be ready to see it once you do thanks
Hi Eric, thank you for your video, it’s truly filled with valuable information. Lately I’ve been watching many videos for I’m in the process to moving from the US to Spain, for the same EXACT reason you described. I’ll be traveling shortly (Malaga, Alicante) to obtain my DNI and start from there. What area of Malaga are you living at? Again Thank you for your detailed and well intentioned video. You have a new subscriber. Take care.
Pete
Where can you optain the DNI first if you still don’t live there I’m also considering moving there in Alicante or Valencia to retire
... and definetly... if you have a free health system that allows you to go to the doctor for any issue or any worry without the fear of seeing the bill... you live longer.😁
People, don’t move to Spain for better lifestyle and then complain about things not being open 24/7. You can’t have both.
Reason no. 6 (and most important):
You can enjoy how the *Real Madrid* wins the 15th European Championship League Cup.
_Of course!!_
⚽⚽⚽⚽
Yeah!!!! We will see how they do in the Olympics. Plus in 2030 Spain will be one of the host of the World Cup.
You have an accent. Where are you from? Your citizenship? And how did that affect obtaining your visa?
Bienvenido a España amigo!!
Gracias Carlos. Me encanta tu país.
I appreciate your comment. Agreed that rent is way too high for locals and that should change.
@@AmericaToSpain Don’t contribute to the problem, then. Be happy there, but stop selling it here like it’s a retirement paradise for higher-income-than-Spaniars foreigners.
How are they feeding the private health care industry?
Being given 10% extra time to live is not a bad thing.
Do you live in marbella? What about the Spanish wealth tax? That the only thing stopping me from moving
Specially now! Yes I agree with you.
Where in Spain did you move to?
Marbella, Málaga.
Food is much cheaper in Spain
Hello Friend, I enjoyed your video. Thank you.👏
I would like to bring to your attention that the background music is a bit high and distracting. Cheers and enjoy your journey.
Last year, we were in Malaga for a month and we enjoyed our visit.
That is SOOO true, For some reason RUclips made the audio much louder. I will try to fix it but you are totally right. It sucks!
But actually all of that makes sense if you don’t earn money in Spain. Because the life style is about make money in USA and waste it in Spain.
Si Pedro. Ahí esta mucho del secreto.
In a few months, you'll have a Costco in Málaga.😅
So I hear. But the less American Spain becomes, the better.
What about paying taxes. I will have a nice US pension soon. I hear Spain will tax me 37% as a retiree? That would be a huge disadvantage for me.
Taxes are complex but there is a 1:1 system with the US that if you pay taxes in the US, you don't pay taxes here except what you generate here.
Spot on
Thank you for your comment.
Is better the public healthcare ! The private healthcare is for a cold or flu!!!
Rich people, politicians (specially socialist ones) and public workers that can choose between public and private, seems that don´t agree with you.
I´m talking about statistics. 82% of public workers in Spain that have the possibility of choose between public and private healthcare, choose private (data from 2021).
@@felixcanas9446, so you are rich, my widow neighbor is poor, and both of you paid the same amount of money for your brother's operation when you buy your daily bread, am I wrong? And that's justice, according to you, right?

I see 99% of these types of videos go on about how much cheaper this place is vs USA. Good info but all of these videos are carbon copies at this point. If you are only basing your life off of RUclips earnings, that would be good to know as well. Appreciate it.

@gabrielanaya677 I know that. And Spain has an open border too. As an American, you could just come in on a holiday visa and stay there. The issue is then being illegal, which nobody would want.
