Selena Gomez’s acting when Alex breaks down crying after Justin forgets her is one of the best acting performances in the history of Disney Channel and I’ll forever stand by that fact 🤭
Younger me thought this was the most phenomenal acting ever. I had a clinical emotional breakdown because I was so moved, lol it was just the childhood trauma.
this movie made my life take a 180 turn as a younger sibling, like i even started being nicer to my brother, thats how impactful this was for me at such a young age 😭
after that movie, you could tell that in s3 and 4 they try to insert as many emotional justin and alex scenes as they can because they saw how good it was in the movie
i think this is one of the best tv series movies disney ever made. I do wish there was a bit more of an explanation for certain things and it always drove me nuts that the actual show would never mention things that happened in the movie but other than that, 10/10 in my book
They actually mention the movie, but it was a throwaway line (Alex's mentions it, but I believe the mom does as well in another episode. They only mention the parents forgetting who they were. )
I think what you're missing from all the spells is they allfollow the standard, "The words don't matter, the INTENT does." That you see in a lot of magic stories. They all work because they MEANT it.
I mean, sure but then why do they constantly try to make things rhyme lol? My headcanon from now on is that Jerry told them that's necessary because he thought it'd be funny to see them try harder
this movie was filmed here in Puerto Rico, but when I was being filmed I was out of the country, when I found out my heart shattered into a million pieces, not exaggerating at all I cried for 3 full days that I did get to meet Selena
This unlocked a memory of how my aunt met selena at a mall when they were filming this movie and asked for a picture for me but I didn’t get to meet her 😭
The reason it worked even though it wasn’t actually a spell is because her intent, her emotions, forced it to work. Magic isn’t about the words, it’s about the feelings, the thoughts, and what you want to happen with it. If the words really mattered, they wouldn’t be able to change spells or even make them up as easily as they do
Yes and also they made an entire episode dedicated to this, Jerry taught them how to do improvised spells and if i remember correctly, it works as long as it rhymes. its the one where alex and justin got stuck in a horror movie
The way I interpreted how the WOWP spells worked was a combination of the words used and your intention/focus. Justin was the most intentional/focused, so his spells would work as he intended them too. Alex was less focused, which is why she’s yield different results even if she said the exact same spell as Justin. And we’d see that when she was in a pinch and actually focused, her spells would work without any negative side effects.
IMO, I interpret the use of the wand as a physical way to focus your magic. You can yield more powerful results with a wand vs with no wand/hand magic.
WHICH explains why the “I wish you and dad had never even met” spell worked. Alex was very focused and intentional with those words AND was using a physical object that focuses her magic, the wand.
This movie, The Hannah Montana Movie, and Starstruck literally changed my little kid life when they aired. I really thought I would have such a complex teenage hood bc of those movies.
In my head, the spell rhymes, gestures, and wands are just tools to focus their intention on a specific result. Magic is a force, they're born with the ability to access it, but they have to learn to gather the magical energy, hold it, and shape it. Each one might have different aptitudes for gathering, holding, or shaping.
there’s a whole episode about being able to create your own spells as long as they rhyme but to be careful cus they’re literal. it’s the horror movie one where selena and justin get stuck in the movie
i remember the day this movie premiered on the disney channel me and my family went out and i made my parents promise me that we'll be back by 8pm so i could watch it but we ended up coming back home pretty late so i cried all night and that's how my trust issues were born
This was definitely one of my fave tv shows turned movies! I thought the ending where Justin forgets Alex was the most traumatizing thing ever when I was younger 😭
I like how in the actual Wizard competition at the end of the series, they kept the purple suits but just had them run through what was basically a haunted house. Major downgrade lol
What I've gathered since childhood was Justin was definitely the most technical skilled wizard of the siblings, Alex was the most Natural she was always using magic so everything came easy to her, Max was overlooked as the most creative with his spell casting he always did things the others would never think of. So each of them all had their own strengths with very situational magic.
Keyan Charlie does a whole two-video retrospective on Wizards of Waverly Place and it's honestly so eye opening. It shows just how much they really didn't keep consistency with the rules of magic and even the movie has it's own plot holes when it comes to how magic is done. I still love the series and I hope it one day gets a revival like ICarly though.
I could be wrong, but I believe the reason they use a wand is to increase precision and make the spell stronger. The same is true for spell wording; for example, a simple spell like when Justin helped Alex out of the bag could be done in a variety of ways because the simple goal is to get her out of the bag, but a more difficult spell would necessitate more specific wording. That is why they would need to remember certain more difficult spells. I'm not sure if this is a bad analogy, but it's similar to when we do math problems. If the math problem is relatively simple or we have a lot of experience solving similar problems, we can use a variety of methods that work for us; however, if the problem is more complex, we must use a specific method/formula to solve it correctly. This is all just my opinion, I could be completely wrong.
Harpers actor said how she was told by her own church to drop the role in this iconic show bc it was “wicked”, which made me appreciate her character more bc lets be honest it wouldn’t be as good without her in the show
They legit never did explain the magic thing though. There are some scenes that they clearly study spells that are unchangable (like the one with the bunny in the first episode), but can be applied to different situations, but still we don’t ever really learn how extendable that is. It does leave more room for interpretation though differently than other wizard movies like harry potter - in WoWP people create spells by making rhymes, in hp we never discover how they do that!
The wands are kinda like a training wheel that focuses their magic. They don't need them per se but it's kind of like a conductor like how electricity needs to go through a wire
older disney channel movies are top tier and this movie literally made me cry like why was it so emotional?? i always have to say i love the feeling lemonade mouth and starstruck give me (probably because the music is so GOLDEN)
In terms of the spells, I honestly feel like it doesn’t even matter what they say as long as the intent is there. We’ve seen them make up spells, change spells, use magic silently… and the the quality of the magic doesn’t change. They always get the result they want unless they’re distracted or something
I think the only reason they have spells is just to give them, as wizards in training, something to guide them and figure out what result they want to get.
the magic in this show is literally what works for the plot. like sometimes they'll use a spell when they already introduced another spell before that could solve the situation way easier
I saw this movie opening night. So many tv shows made movies (Phineas and Ferb, Lizzie Mcguire, Even Stevens, Good Luck Charlie) are all sooo good it’s hard to pick a favorite
I adored this movie and the tv show so much but i defo recommend listening to the wizard of waverly pod podcast, they talk about how different the team behind the movie was from the show
This movie absolutely obliterated me as a child, especially the scene with Alex crying when her brothers disappeared. I would picture myself in her place with my brother and sister disappearing and it'd make me sob every time. Top tier movie right there, I unironically still love it
You have made so many valid points about the spells 😂 really tho stuff I tried to figure out and I always knew to that Alex was gonna be the family wizard ❤
I think there was an episode within the first or second season where Jerry teaches them about spell improvisation. Essentially altering a spell for a specific action or request. And I think the wands are initially used to focus the magic for the wizard in use, eventually I guess they do not need to use them but still do for pizzazz or for stronger spells.
Wizards of Waverly Place is one of my favorite TV Shows from my Childhood & the movie is just as phenomenal as the show. Also, my favorite Disney Channel Original Movie is How to Build a Better Boy (2014).
When you compared this movies budget to Good luck Charlie!! I don’t think so! Good luck Charlie the Christmas movie was also a multi location, they filmed in Las Vegas!! And other places around to make it look like they travels cross country.
thinking about it in retrospect, a lot of adult wizards would likely be eldest children because they’d have years of experience on their younger siblings learning spells and using magic. that sucks lol.
growing up I LOVED wizards of waverly place especially because like alex I have an older and a younger brother and we all have similar personalities like the ones on the show. I still cry at the scene of alex forgetting her brothers even as an adult
for the type of spells they can do, they can basically do anything. I forgot what it’s called but basically while they are training, they practice specific spells but once they reach a certain level, they do those type of spells where they basically kinda make it up. there’s still restrictions but yeah
In S1E9 of wizards, they basically say you can make your own spell as long as it rhymes. but you have to be like specific. idk it made sense to me at the time
I remember being OBSESSED with this movie when it came out (in hindsight, I had a very intense crush in Selena Gomez and just didn't know it yet lmao so that might've played a role into my love for the show and this movie)!!! Also, in terms of the one Disney Channel Original Movie that I love the most, I have to say Lemonade Mouth : I don't even think it's anything to do with the quality of the movie itself, cause there are quite q few Disney Channel movies that I LOVE and can't really rank, but this one just genuinely shaped me when I was a kid; I'm pretty sure it was one of the first pieces of media that gave me that first spark of "oh, I could actually make music and get somewhere if I work for it hard enough!" (Obviously it's not a realistic movie, but I remember it making me feel unstoppable)! That and it also made me fall in love with Bridgit Mendler's voice and her first album (Hello my name is...) was the first CD I bought for myself and i still love it and think it's really good to this day🥹🥹
I loved this movie sm it’s so nostalgic for me cause the show was one of my favorites growing up and ignited my love for Selena Gomez she was my childhood crush growing up.
I love this movie it’s one of my favorite Disney channel original movies the acting Selena does in the end when Justin forgets her always gets me even when I was a kid it had me about to cry
so excited to watch this, this is my favorite disney channel show movie (besides good luck charlie its christmas). Bangs are looking beautiful might I add!

I’m pretty sure TJ I think that was him name (a character in the early seasons, the guy that plays one of the spy kids) said that words for spells are like training wheels and that you don’t need them once you’re really good. Professor crumbs kind of shows that sometimes too.
7:10 In The Never Ending story when the horse sunk in “quick sand” (aka the saddest moment in movie history) is where Disney Channel surely went “a false fear we can implement into children, perfect”. Because?? How I did I //just// find out at the start of this year , at 18yrs old , that quick sand don’t work like this 💀💀
From "magic" books that I've read, it seems like intention and passion for the spell is a big reason why it works. Like she meant what she said so it happened.
the “bring the pixels back” comment is so real bc i honestly miss when every show had a little bit of that frosted quality, everything is too high quality now & it doesn’t feel nearly as nostalgic and cozy, it just doesn’t hit the same 😭
so as a kid, i never watched the wizards of waverly place show. in fact, i didn't even know there was one. but, i did watch this movie about six times, and i loved it so much. this movie will forever have a place in my heart
The Wizards of Waverly Place Movie is one of my all time favorite Disney Channel movies. It's iconic, it's emotional, it's stunning. It is in my top 5 along with High School Musical 2, Halloweentown, the Phineas and Ferb Movie, and Sky High. Also the Hannah Montana Movie (I put that in its own category since it was released in theaters and is a piece of cinema).

It is in my top 5 along with High School Musical 2, Halloweentown, the Phineas and Ferb Movie, and Sky High. Also the Hannah Montana Movie (I put that in its own category since it was released in theaters and is a piece of cinema).
