  • Jrue Holiday. 2018 All-Defensive First Team. 2019 All-Defensive Second Team. 2013 NBA All-Star. Holiday had a career year in 2018-19 but the departure of a certain All-NBA First Teamer brought a lot of change to New Orleans. Despite all the turnover, Holiday still continued to ball. He averaged 19.1 points (second best in his career), 4.8 rebounds (career high), 6.7 assists (top 20 in the league - tied with Chris Paul), 1.6 steals (ties his career high, top 12 in the league, again tied with Chris Paul).
4.1 deflections per game - 2nd in the NBA
109.9 defensive rating with Jrue on the court
112.2 defensive rating with Jrue OFF the court
Too confusing? Well, here’s the easiest way to look at it in a greater context: the Pels were 15th in the league defensively with Jrue on the court and 22nd in the league with him off the court.
6th in the NBA in both steals and blocks among guards
This video is actually most about how Jrue navigates ball screens defensively.

Damian Lillard called Jrue Holiday "the best defender in the league" among all guards on JJ Redick’s The Old Man & The Three pod.
Kevin Durant followed up on a later episode of JJ’s pod and said “Jrue Holiday is solidified as probably the best defender in the league at the guard position. When we talk about defense, a lot of people don’t really understand what defense really means. For different positions, especially at point guard, the stuff you have to do to guard, they don’t get a lot of credit for fighting over screens especially now they getting screened at half court, guys are running off of pindowns.”
KD actually has another quote out there (link below) talking about Jrue's defense: “Actually, it was tough to dribble on Jrue Holiday. He slides his feet so well, he’s got good hands, he’s strong, he’s got good instincts. I gained a lot of respect for him in that series because he went from guarding me to Klay (Thompson) to Steph (Curry) to guarding Draymond (Green), neutralizing picks and rolls. He’s special. He’s special on that side of the ball.”

I don't think he is underrated. He was in one all-defensive first team and one all-defensive second team.

Everyone is switching on defense now. He is one of the few players who still stays on his man and fight against screen on defense.

Hey Evin, very perceptive video on an interesting topic that rarely gets talked about. I also think Jrue is arguably best on ball defender in the league.
However, I think some of these clips are a result of bad screens being set/bad use of screens. Most showcase Jrues screen defense well but a decent bit doesn’t seem to demonstrate this skill well, in my opinion

True! Some clips I almost didn’t include but figured “hey, when would I ever use these if I don’t use them for this”
I appreciate the constructive criticism and I do agree. Thanks 🙏🏽🙏🏽
