Dear @Casual DIY. I have an Evolution Rage5S, and I need to make L shaped timber out of 3by2. Now because I am not going full depth with the cut, obviously the riving knife does not let me to do the cut. Is there any trick? thanks
Regardless, it's still a good saw. I think it's always available. It is one of the best saws to be used for hobby purposes. Thank you for sharing your experiences.

Got mine out of storage last week to help build a new wood store. The start is pretty rough & you need the right blade for the job but it still works well & the only breakage was a small bolt that fell off (replaced with one I had lying around). Great value & mine is again folded up in my tiny shed until the rain stops.

Hi Tomasz great video as always, I've had the Rage 5s for about 5 years too, its a great saw for the DIYer and addition to my workshop. The soft start upgrade was amazing complete game changer to the operation. Agree dust collection is dreadful attempted a few options myself but still not ideal. Definately interested to see what you can come up with too. Keep up the good work.

I think I've done each of your RAge5s mods, with the exception of the Router table. All of these tweaks and a regular maintenance checks results in a good versatile saw. When you haven't got space for multiple saws and need to work with many different materials, not much else comes close in that price range.
Dust collection though.. eugh! Please make a video on how to sort... help me, Obi Wan Kenobi, you're my only hope!

As a DIYer myself I have a lot of Evolution tools which includes their 255 sliding mitre saw (used to have 85), 185 circular saw, R230RCP Reciprocating Saw and I own their R255PTS table saw. We've previously spoken about the blades that I use and my personal choice for all saw blades are Saxton blades. I've made a lot of furniture (for inside and outside), stools, chopping boards etc using my Evolution tools (especially my table saw with Saxton blades (as well as other branded tools). You are 100% correct when you say that you have to set up and calibrate your power tools correctly. People *DO NOT* realise that almost every power tool *MUST* be setup and calibrated from the start. When you watch RUclips video of professional builders with their brand new SawStop for example which can cost thousands to buy, they still setup and calibrate the SawStop before using them. People seem to think that all power tools (especially power saws) are perfectly calibrated straight out of the factory, when they clearly are not.
I personally believe that Evolution tools are a bit under-priced for what you get (more than a bit actually), especially their table saws. My R255PTS has ran perfectly for about 3 year now with absolutely no issues whatsoever, I'm not a fan of the fence though but it does do the job it's designed for, I've also made my own zero clearance insertion plate but I do use the standard plate too. I check my power tools every 6 month or so for calibration, but they rarely need adjusting.
Anyway keep making these great woodworking videos.

I get a lot of these comments where people think the tool needs to be perfectly set up out of the box. Even if it was perfect in the factory it needs to travel thousands of miles from China and it will require some set up on arrival to your workshop, simple as that.

Another good vid, bought mine after seeing yours, as an upgrade from a cheap £150 one and it's a game changer, adding soft start is icing on the cake, zero clearance another step, I also added a 3d printed emergency off paddle over the existing switch, makes it easy to stop without bending to look, im also looking at the extraction so can't wait for your thoughts on that, thanks.

bought this in 2020 because of you, and am really happy of this machine and thankful to you for your videos, I have added a sort of router table like you did but without router, but I find it convenient, the machine is still doing its job the only thing I had to replace is the ugly and poor table set, and I also built two myself. Regarding dust extraction I work in a shed which is half external (even in winter) and thet is not my problem, I put the machine on top of a pallet and the dust just goes down the holes ;-) for the rest the wind is taking care of it. Solid machine and it works fine, thanks again

I bought the saw after watching your videos, and initially, I hated it. Nothing was precisely square or parallel. Luckily in another video, you suggested good quality speed square, square set and.. You know what? I do not love my saw, but it works well after many adjustments, so I like it now. I was able to cut my kitchen door fascias to very accurate tolerances. Wife's happy. ;)

Ive had this saw for over 3 years with a regular tune up it works just fine. Saxton blades are good and fit the bore wit no reducer ring needed. I fixed my miter carriage down to make both miter slots parallel, by switching the carriage top bolt for something longer.
Glad you’re still liking it but the whole reason I bought mine was the fact it folded up, as I don’t have the luxury of having a permanent workshop area of any kind!

Another great video and just at the point of buying a saw today. Where did you get the soft start module from? A lot of people have commented about the poor dust extraction. Is it proving difficult to retrofit your own exctraction hose to the Rage saw? Keep up the good video work.
The dust extraction is pants on this saw unfortunately. I got the soft start module off Amazon. Got a video on installing that module.
Just found your channel. I think the combination of the table saw and the router are perfect using both sides of the fence, one for each application. Great stuff. Is the fence on a rack and pinion?

I think I'm going to have to fit the soft start, I followed your plans for the router table, it works great. I did struggle getting the correct size runners for the router table so I used the nuts and bolts from the extension assembly to fit the table in the fence guides. When using Freud blades do you find the reducing bushes safe to use with this saw? Please keep up the exceptional informative videos👍👍.
Yes it seems to be safe, had no issues with it. Although make sure the reducing rings fit well. I had an Abracs blade and the reducing ring I had for my Freud blade was just dropping through. And both blades had the same bore hole size of 30mm. In my opinion the fit of the reducing ring needs to be solid and not falling through the hole. Then it will be safe.
Thanks for the video Tomasz. I am generally pleased with my Rage 5 although I am finding more and more that the fence loses parallel with the blade. This can easily be rectified but it's a bit of a pain to have to do each time the fence is set. Have you found this and/or do you have a solution?
Once I've set up the fence itself (with two bolts on top) never had an issue with it going forward. I wonder what could be causing it 🤔
I bought this for £300 about 4 months ago. As standard it's an absolute game changer from my old £150 budget saw. I didnt realise how bad my old one was until I got this one

Hi Tomasz. Great videos. And the UK misses you! Quick question. My new Rage 5S has some side to side play in the sliding carriage. About 1mm. Does yours have any play? To be clear I'm referring to the big sliding carriage, not the small mitre thing. Cheers!
Thank you. Yes it does have some play in it not sure how much never checked it as it seems negligible.
I also watched many of your videos before buying this saw. Price for features it can’t be beat. My only ongoing gripe is the riving knife - I still haven’t managed to get it dead on aligned with the blade and it angles
Away from the fence ever so slightly. I’ve sorted my under saw dust collection by hacking off the useless dust ports, covering the openings and sitting the saw onto a cabinet to let the dust drop into it and sucked out via a 4inch dust port.
Yes I'm still thinking of something for the dust extraction but it may come to that I will do something similar to what you did.
I was torn between this saw and the much more expensive Dewalt but after watching your vids I've taken the plunge and I'm just waiting for my Rage 5S to be delivered. Unfortunately the soft start module doesn't appear to be available at the moment on Amazon so I'll just have to hope they get some in soon. I will be modifying it as per your upgrades at sometime in the future. Keep up the great vids Tomasz. 🙂
Thanks, hope it will serve you well. If I were to buy another saw now it would be one with cast iron top, which would be far more expensive. Just don't see the point in buying something in the middle range now.
@@CasualDIY Fair enough. I could possibly afford a cast iron table topped machine but at the moment I couldn't justify the expence so the Rage 5 will have to do for a while. I've manage to order a soft start from Germany so I'll be following your video to install it 🙂

Tomasz this is a great video and I love all your upgrades. I have a similar model of evolution table saw (it's pretty much identical) and find that it's hard to get the fence to stay parallel and that the sliding carriage has so much play in it that using the mitre slot on that side is really inaccurate, do you have any tips?
I do have a whole video on how to set this saw up - it should help with the fence.
Where it comes to the mitre gauge its rubbish and I made my own version - got a video on that as well. With the carriage I don't experience any play in it 🤔 this saw is quite simple and a lot of the things can be adjusted. I would look for any bolts that are holding the carriage and check them if they not came loose. From underneath the table as well.

I finally got round to buying one of these saws new back in spring.. Late last year (2021) the prices went crazy high for a while then steadily dropped again. At the time of the peak price ( around £440 !) I almost paid £300 for a used one.. Sellers were making a profit on a saw that they'd used for a year or so !
Anyway, as I spend most of my spare time watching RUclips videos instead of building a workshop ,all my new power tools and Chinese jigs are still boxed and unused ! I haven't even unboxed the Rage 5 !
Anyway my question , the fence, can you rely on the front graduation reference marks for a parallel cut OR do you have to take a tape measure each time to check front and rear measurements to check as per my last cheapo saw ?
When you set the fence up it should be fine for straight cuts. But graduation references lol

You say its not a professional bit of kit but i have to say it is quality, I've got a big stationary table saw at my workshop that cost well over a grand but i use this one when im doing stuff on site as its so portable and obviously it has its foibles but its definitely punching above its price class and holds its own against the much more expensive one i have.
Well for sure at that price range you will not find a better saw.
I like the multi-material blade. I have a stock of used (free!) timber, and don't have to worry about cutting through nails and screws. And I can use it occasionally to cut metal or plastic. Rubbish dust extraction seems to be a feature of all Evolution saws, as my mitre and track saws are no better!
That's true about the dust extraction to all but one saws from Evolution. They got a normal circular saw, can't remember the model but done a video on it, and the dust extraction on its brilliant. I owned I think 7 circular saws and its the best. And it's so strange to me that the track saw they got is absolutely terrible with dust.
I've got all the bad ones! Rage 5S, mitre saw and track saw!
Hi Tomasz. Can you tell me if, after your careful calibration, is this saw capable of achieving the precision required for complex 3-D cutting board glue ups?
Hmm depends. If you will not use the sliding carriage and the mitre gauge and instead you would use a table saw sled then yes. You will have to make a zero clearance plate as the original orange one has way too much flex. Plus change the blade to a proper wood cutting blade. The biggest problem with this saw is the state it will arrive to your workshop. Mine was more or less perfect- flat table, straight fence etc. But I know many people had problems with that. So the answer to your question is not a simple yes or no as you can see.
Hello Tomasz, I watched a review on this saw that suggested the fence could be a bit wiggly in use. An accurate fence is a big thing for me if I'm going to spend the money and upgrade from my cheap and nasty unit, so I'd appreciate your feedback on this.
If I do get the Evolution, I'll be modding it as you have done, I really love the way you've upgraded your machine :)
I had no issues with my fence. When the clamp is engaged it's stable as a rock. I did hear stories that it was not straight or was not clamping straight. But you can adjust that with two bolts that are on the top of the fence plus you can adjust the tension at the back of the fence when you take the cover off.

I got one for £220 in 2018. It is a great value for money DIY saw with a lot of good features for the price. As said you do need to swap out the blade and zero clearance plate and square it all up. I would buy it again at its current price

I've put in an adjustable voltage regulator before the On/Off switch, has a good effect, but set too low stops the No Volt safety switch

I got mine on special £227 in 2017. Any tips on using the fence? I find there’s too much play with the clamp open where it slides at the far end - I can spend ages squaring it up but the fence can easily twist and then clamp down no longer parallel to the mitre and blade. I’ve tried making a wider attachment for the far end of the fence, but the profile was too difficult to cut to match the odd shaped groove of the fence rail. Probably ideal problem for a 3D printer, but if I tell ‘she who must be obeyed’ that I’ve bought a 3D printer to fix the massive saw I bought that she hates... Love your videos Tomasz!
Hmm difficult to recommend something for the fence problem if I've not came across it myself. Although I'm tempted in making my own fence so maybe that will be a solution for you.

Hi there. I watch all your videos great stuff. I have the Rage 5 S here in Australia. In the main i am very happy with it. Tried to put a soft start module (purchased here in Australia) on my machine nothing changed, i suspect the module was faulty. They would not exchange for a new one. Do you have a supplier for these please? i would buy one and get it shipped over here. Yes it is quite scary turning on the machine for that first cut.
Before most projects time wise, i recheck square on blade and fence. Some times found to be out of square. My fence is not square to the runners, can you explain how i should or can square it up? Evolution have been non existent in their reply to my request's. Strange i know. I do find however that when i cut from right hand side of blade eg guide on my right as i stand at machine, the riving blade catches on timber as it passes through, thus giving a potential bind of kick back Any ideas? apart from only cutting from left. Keep up the great work

I truly hated my Rage 5-s, even after doing the soft-start mod. It would constantly fall out of square after 1 or 2 cuts, the low RPM made cutting anything over 5mm MDF an absolute chore with bounce and chatter like you wouldn't believe. Mine also could not be setup in a way that allowed it to tilt more than 43 degrees without getting out the alan keys. The noise is ridiculous and the 'dust extraction' ports are decorative only. I'd say maybe I just got a bad one, but I had 2 😂 The first one went back to Machine Mart because the stand was bent out of the box.
Edited to add: the mitre slots are too shallow for off-the-shelf accessories and the sliding table on mine has a whole lot of play too.
Unlucky I guess. Mine cuts lovely anything I throw at it. But yes the dust extraction if terrible. I don't find my saw too noisy tho, however I always use my hearing protection when operating any power tools.

I made a clearance plate out of aluminium as I had the wood chattering and breaking the plates, this no longer happens I still get the blade chatter but it does not effect the clearance plate.
Never had issues like that with my zero clearance plates.

Hi Thomaz, excellent video as always. Im in the market for a new table saw. At present im looking at the Makita MLT 100N, the Dewalt 2745 or the Rage 5S. The rage is at least €300 cheaper than Makita and similar to Dewalt. Should I purchase the Rage 5S in your opinion bearing in mind that im only a DIYer that usually only makes a few shaker doors and cabinets. Look forward to hearing back from you.
The Makita table saws are not very good. Heard a lot of bad opinions on them, especially when you consider the price tag. If you are prepared to accept the Rage 5s flaws and fix some of them or make jigs for it like a sled then it should serve you well. Inspect the saw well and if there is anything wrong with it then replace straight away. I think that's the biggest problem with the Rage 5s. Sometimes they come perfect like mine did but sometimes they will come with warped tables, fences etc. It cam happen to any tool but it seems it happens bot more often to Rage 5S. The Dewalt is a solid saw however it has far less features and smaller table but in theory it should be more accurate and reliable. There isn't a simple answer to this really. From my perspective if had to buy a table saw again then I would go for two options. Either the cheaper Rage 5s or a much more expensive iron cast table top saw. I just can't see the point to speed money on something in-between as I can make the Rage 5s to perform with correct set up and jigs as a the saws that are in between.
@@CasualDIY Thanks for your reply so quickly. I did see the reviews about the Makita mlt 100 but I know they addressed some of the quality issues and now have the replacement Makita mlt 100n. Now if that means they have addressed all the problems I’m not sure. I do think the Dewalt has the best fence system but the surface overall is very small. I like the sliding mitre table on the Rage 5S and haven’t heard you complain about it. The only thing putting me off buying one would be the amount of plastic it’s made with. However if you have yours 4 yrs now then it’s obviously not a problem. So if you’re saying you’d but it again for the features it holds then I think I’ll take the plunge and buy one. Your router table addition to your is amazing so I’ll be stealing that idea straight away. Thanks for your advice 🙏🏻
If you own this saw, and do nothing else.... do the soft start mod..... i did it one week after getting it, and it's easy and makes it much nicer to use...

Well, I'm thinking of making my own fence to be honest. However if you want a quick upgrade I would use a melamine board to build over the existing fence. maybe add a T-Track on top for some jigs. But if you are looking for a bit more advanced option than you have to wait for my video in a near future 😅

After just under 3 years, so just in warranty my frame decided to start bending, I take my table saw to jobs so it's not a static tool but the design was poorly implemented and where it has bent and fractured it's a very weak point (the point is where the small legs go through the frame, there is no triangulation to give it rigidity, a rookie design faux par as far as I'm concerned but fair play to Evolution they are picking it up to take a look at it but eeven if they swap the frame out for the same, either they are or I am, going to have to modify it, fortunately I have got a new MIG and ARC welder so I could be making a video on how to beef up the frame at that weak point if Evolution give me a stock frame.

i have to say i just bought one of these mainly off the back of your videos and seeing your mods and stuff to make it a very useful tool. however i have quite a bit of an issue with a 'wobbly' fence. whenever i move it and lock it in place there is a lot of wiggle between front and back (probably about 7mm difference) i wondered if you had this issue at all and if so how did you fix it? thanks in advance
I've not had that problem but you can try to adjust the fence with the two bolts on it. Check if the jaws at the front and back are not damaged, still there and straight and the last thing you can check is at the back of the fence you got this plastic cover when you take it off you should be able to adjust the strength of the locking mechanism. Hope this will help.

Hi Tom don't realy dont have a comment as I have got one of these saws too just enjoy watching your videos but what are your thoughts on this I watched a guy in America on RUclips put two blades together on a rage 5 saw what do you think is it a good idea to do this.

Hey there. I have also had a rage5-s for several years now (2018 production) and I am getting ready to make some cabinet doors. I am having issues with the flatness of the table surface. When I put a straight edge across the width of the table, the surface to the left edge of the blade opening seems to dip down about 0.9mm. I am looking at the flatness across the cast aluminium part, not including the pressed sheet metal extensions and with the orange blade insert removed.
Is yours flatter than that?
I am this close to dismantling the saw and banging the dip out but if yours is really flat, I might talk to evolution about ordering a new table top.
Hi, just checked mine to be sure. The middle cast aluminium top with the orange insert plate removed is flat. I can't see any gaps.

Hey there, thanks for all the videos, I am about to buy this machine. One thing I would like to use it for is baseboards, instead of carrying both table saw and mitre saw. Looks like you can't go past 45° with this machine for off-square corners, am I wrong?

Not sure what you mean exactly. The saw has got some positive stops for 90 and 45 degrees that you can set up. So you can go beyond 45 degrees but only by little maybe 1-3 degrees.
@@CasualDIY I meant exactly the 1-2 degrees beyond 45: mitre saws usually allow you to go for 46-47 degrees. Ah, I refer to the tilting mechanism: the scale on your table saw goes up to 45 degrees, that's why I was wondering if you can tilt a little bit over the 45 degrees. If that's doable with this Rage 5S I assume one could actually manage doing inclined cuts and all typical table saw cuts with this machine, not necessarily needing a mitre saw for smaller jobs like baseboards etc.

With soft start its very simple in my video I show which wire goes where and that's it. Can't really make it simpler than that. But yes you will loose warranty if you do that.

I bought mine about the same time as you, but because of the almost violent start up and the deafening sound of the motor I have only used it about 6 times, whereas I use to use my previous ELU flip saw (chopsaw flipover to table saw) every week, it was built solid, and made to last, it was not cheap I paid about £700 in the 1990's, so I was gutted when it became to heavy for me to carry up flights of stairs etc.
The Evolution might seem like a great buy, with all it's whisles and bells, but it's not solid enough, to noisey, with no soft start, I just don't like it!
Yes its not perfect, that's why it costs £309 and not £700. Unfortunately that's the reality

It the top was cast iron the it would be a problem to look after but this is all aluminium so no issues at all.

@@LeeDingle-fh4nh you can but some special tool cleaners, or denatured alcohol, wipe it clean and use some wax for protection

Have you had any more thoughts on improving dust collection for the saw?
Took a break from it for a while now. I think the best solution and easiest is just to build an enclosure for the plastic bottom and add dome extraction to it.

It gives you a better cut, less tear out on the bottom of the material. If you are cutting narrow pieces they can fall into the void of a normal plate. Plus in this case the original plate is rubbish and very flexible making it dangerous to use while ripping narrower boards.

I'll try again ... RUclips keeps on deleting my comment ... some of the things I've just sent to Evolution!!
1) Washers for bolts to fit tubular frame to table saw didn't fit the bolts.
2) Took two hours to fit the last tubular frame bolt as the holes didn't align and I didn't want to bend the frame.
3) The front and rear aluminium bits for the fence are different lengths and the stop bolt is in the longer front one, meaning that when the right side extension is pulled out to its full extent, the plastic plug on the rear bit is knocked out and the rail falls off the guide wheel.
4) The wheels that the right extension run on are a smaller diameter than the slot they run in and are both at the same height with regards the table top, meaning as you extend the end of the extension naturally drops down ... if the wheels were at different heights,. i.e. inner wheel running on channel bottom and outer wheel running on channel top, this wouldn't happen.
5) Internally the plastic guard around the blade isn't seated properly, I can see the fixing tangs on one side.
6) Biggest issue, the fence!!
-a) The design is such that a chunk has been taken out of the box section to allow the clamp part of the fence to fit, meaning it is now weaker and, in my case, I had to take it apart and bend the side of the extrusion back in because it was sticking out!
-b) The fence side is not square to the table, it leans away from the blade (to the right) by about 0.87mm ... depending on the thickness of the material that means your cut width could vary by about 1mm!!
7) The front part of the fence has only two locating bits on the underside at the outer edges, meaning when it is at the extreme end of the front rail it needs to be kept in from the edge of the rail to stop it falling off ... if there had been a middle bit, then you'd have been able to take it out to the edge of the rail (you lose about 7cm of extension due to this).
Sincerest thanks to Tomasz for all the vids on this saw (and other vids of course) ... I bought this saw mainly due to you, got it a few weeks ago from FFX for £271 (Ebay doing a 15% off deal) ... also bought the soft start module and Trend blades ... intend modding the extensions to give more extension and better rigidity.
Well that was a journey. I think the biggest problem Evolution got is the Chinese plant, its just so hit and miss to what you will get. I was lucky and mine was perfect. Got few friends that had to replace their saws two or three times to get a good one. But when you get a good one, it's just worth it. Although it shouldn't be like that.
@@CasualDIY Well the customer service from Evolution is outstanding, they replied within five hours and with detailed answers, not the usual one or two words ... very very pleased with them.
1) NEW WASHERS ON THE WAY :)
2) Had apology for hassle (this is always an issue with tubular steel frames I've found).
3) / 7) Non-issue ... either the saw came with the extrusions adjusted wrongly (or I adjusted and forgot), now not a problem!
4) Just a comment on improving.
5) It turns out that the plastic tab at the front of the (top section) dust cover is catching on the metal and forcing it out, which also explains why the blade jumps back as I release the handle from adjusting angle ... a little heat on the plastic will sort that!
6) NEW FENCE ON THE WAY :)

Yeah that clearance plate is garbage, my dad after he got my Evolution saw, made a zero clearance plate out of aluminium, that was right before I gave him sled for this saw to eliminate the need for replacing that plate 🤣🤣🙃🙃

The biggest and best upgrade to my Rage 5s was to give it away and buy an axminster craft saw, its night and day difference I should have saved up more in the first place and bought one.
As it turns out, +/-1mm is considered acceptable tolerance for the table surface casting. That's from evolution's service department. I was about to buy a new tabletop to correct a 1mm dip near the blade area which prevents me from setting the blade to 90º accurately but a new part may be just as bad as the old part.
Regardless, it's still a good saw. I think it's always available. It is one of the best saws to be used for hobby purposes. Thank you for sharing your experiences.
