Would You Fly to ALABAMA'S LEAST USED AIRPORT?

- I took a flight to the least used airport in Alabama: Muscle Shoals/Northwest Alabama Regional Airport (MSL/KMSL) to find out whats there, onboard a Boutique Air Pilatus PC-12.

You’re getting the real American experience on this trip! Props for being a foreigner willing to see places beyond NYC, Orlando, or Las Vegas!
Brits feel the same way when American visitors to the UK brave the wilds and manage to cross the terrifying tarmac moat that is the M25 motorway around London Kenny. :) Have a great day.
@@tomcummin6801 oh we watch "Escape to the country" I want to see every village and town..😍
I actually live in Muscle Shoals, crazy that I stumbled across this video. Hope you enjoyed your time here.
> 23:32
I live in Florence.
From Haleyville originally...Now living in Big Spring, Texas
@@mayshack I live close to Pensacola! It was very jarring to hear.
Muscle Shoals is all about the studio recording history. Some of the greatest albums in country and rock history were recorded in Muscle Shoals. From skynyrd to the stones to the Foo Fighters. In fact Foo did a fantastic documentary about the original historic studio there.
The Stones flew in to Mussel Sholes on Eastern Airlines back in the day. I think it was a DC-9 they were flying back then.
Muscle Shoals is a Rock Legend!
Glad I came to the comments. I knew I heard of that place somewhere & it was bugging the hell outta me lol
That girl behind you on the plane was cracking me up lol. She seemed very suspicious of the gopro. Even took a picture of it. I'm sure she realized eventually that you were just vlogging and not creeping on her lol.
I'm guessing she was actually taking a selfie to post to whatever social media she uses.
This video is breaking my brain. So used to seeing you flying through some of the biggest and busiest airports in the world in all these exotic locations and here you are, in the same Rick's Barbecue that I eat at a couple times a month. I hate that I missed you but I hope you enjoyed my part of the world in The Shoals!
'Least Used in x state or country ' should be a new series!
Basically the Airport version of Geoff's series
A series of videos flying to the least used commercial airport (i.e. one with regular flights in and out) in all 50 states would be interesting.
"Fly from most used airport to least used airport in each state"
Hawaii might be the most interesting if he does that, been to VERY small airports in Hawaii. Airports where the lights on the runway only get turned on right before your flight in a small Cesna starts taxiing!
Well then if he was in TX he would go to either Longview or College Station and we can’t have him be Aggie washed!!
What I love about this guy is that he shows a genuine appreciation for the little things. He doesn't look down his nose at all things American or rural American like some people do. And he's not a food snob or snob in any way. That's why this channel is quickly becoming one of my favorites.

Alabama Man: You from Scotland?
Noel: ...England.
Alabama Man: ANGland???
Noel: Bloody hell...
Aww cmon, it's just local dialect! Repeating it back in a surprised way is a way of saying "woah, that's wild!"
😂🤣
Noel says "Alabamer" so same difference lol.
I think you had the quintessential Alabama experience! A guy who would drive you if his car wasn't impounded, a rundown motel next to a trailer park with big pickups all in front, renting a pickup, barbecue dinner, conservative radio. I mean, that's what Alabama is all about.
Hard pass thanks.......
He even got the sweet tea.
@@Archduke17 I noticed! It almost brought a tear to my eye!
hopefully no dressing up in klan attire
Haha a brainwashed lefty!
My father worked out of the old terminal in Muscle Shoals for Eastern Airlines during the 1950's. I remember the airport had a dog named mother that would meet every Eastern Flight and wait at the bottom of the airplanes stairway for the flight attendant to gives her cookies! I also remember a woman being late for a flight that was already lined up for takeoff, they brought that airplane back to the terminal so she could board. At that time Eastern only flew two engine Martins out of Muscle Shoals, great memories.
Muscle Shoals has an iconic music studio and history. The Rolling Stones recorded Wild Horses and Brown Sugar there. Bob Seger, Wilson Picket and many others recorded great music there. I can't believe that flight was only about $50!! Great aircraft!!
You can also add to that list the following: Aretha Franklin, Paul Simon, Simon and Garfunkel, Lynyrd Skynyrd, and so many more.
@@andrewdressler7076, yep. The swampers (The studio band) has played on so many amazing albums. The swamper's bassist's son is also one of the lead guitarist/vocalists in the Drive By Truckers and the other lead, Cooley, is from around there too. Jason Isbell is also from nearby. Lots of amazing music out of that part of the country.
Absolutely gorgeous views from the window of the PC-12!
Love the idea of the least used airports tour. I think the most interesting parts of travelling are going to the places not many people go to.
Definitely
Absolutely brilliant video Noel! These trips are actually the most entertaining to watch. The smaller lessor known places, airlines & airports are what really interest me the most! Keep them coming! ✈️
Laughed when the Guy thought you were Scottish. One of your best vids due to the unexpected circumstances. Folks from Alabama seem very friendly.
I doubt I'd want to see Noell in a kilt.
Seem friendly cause he's white and from "the old country"
@@gerardoarenasss or probably bc southern hospitality is a real thing and people treat you with respect regardless of your appearance im sorry the north sucks
@@austindillard6069 Southern hospitality is real, but that doesn’t mean they all extend it to any and all visitors, as folks who “look Chinese” (even if they’re Korean, Japanese, or some other Asian) outside of major cities can attest these days.
I have had the Scotland question many many times. (From Ireland).
All the staff in the airports were so pleasant! Rare thing to encounter in my opinion
I love these little airlines, the pilots are so friendly and amazing
Noel you should do more videos like these where you show some more of the towns you visit along with the aviation bit! Loved this video!
22:54 - It warms my heart considerably to find out that Dale Gribble is a real person.
🤣
It would be funny if this became a series like Geoff Marshall visiting the least used stations in Britain!
That’s one of those motels you can rent “by the hour”. 😆
Most people would require it for an hour only
@@Mercilessonion It takes that long? 🧐
@@davidwebb4904 nah, you need to bathe, pack unpack etc... Everything included would be 1 hour
@@Mercilessonion Unpack, inflate, rinse off, deflate, pack......
“No tell” motel.

Noel: So erm...what sorts of tea do you have on offer here?
Waitress: Awwww hunny, we got BOTH kinds...sweet AND fruit!
Noel: ...
Noel: "Should I go to Captain D's?" Me, from across the room: "Oh god, no! Run away!!"
I agree. I yelled barbecue! When he gave the options.
The worst food poisoning I've ever had came from Captain D's.
Same here. Although I do like their fish and chips sometimes, Noel needed to go with the BBQ

17:00 - Ricks Barbecue , 2501 Woodward Ave, Muscle Shoals, AL 35661
I’ve heard ppl in the south are friendly and it seems to hold true! Every single person had a smile on their face!
It’s the police and politicians down south who’s going straight to hell .....right now I’ll still feel uncomfortable just flying over the south ...
Except that you're not supposed to see their faces right now! I go there regularly as it's my home state. Wouldn't do it if I wasn't vaccinated! That said, Southerners are extremely friendly, usually.
Absolutely loved this, Noel! I travel to rural parts of the southern states for work quite often and I seem to always have close to the same experience.
I think this was one of the best videos you have made! I live an hour away from Pensacola and I love that you visited small towns of the U.S.A. especially in the south. You really got the true southern experience. LOL! Keep videos like these coming!
Glad you enjoyed it!
My favourite vlog in a while, I enjoyed the interactions with so many of the friendly American folk, you're living the dream!
Check out Burlington, VT for a nice small airport. There's 15 gates in all. The staff who check you in usually are the ones that then board you on the flight. When I need to fly, that's the airport I always try to leave from
Colorado pickup truck to catch a flight to Denver? Coincidence? I think not 🤣
Welcome to my home state, so glad you visited with us. Please visit again.
Once normality comes back I’d love to see you visit a few of those remote northern Canadian airports such as Inuvik Yellowknife and Iqaluit
when i hear PC-12 all i think of is recon aircraft. you picked a hell of a time to come to the south with all the storms we've been having down here. glad you had mostly good interactions with the people. i just recently started watching your channel and seeing you come to a very local airport to me (PNS) was pretty cool to see. safe travels!
Thank you so much for making these videos Noel. Its a little bit of escapism when most of us can't travel on planes right now.
Love your videos. I’m from Alabama, not far away from The Shoals… I stopped the video at 17:49 to say one thing… Alabama is well known for the best barbecue, not decent barbecue! Welcome to sweet home Alabama! Hope you got some of that southern hospitality
The Swampers were the Muscle
Shoals studios house band!!
Love these longer videos. I enjoy them every week but this one had everything you could possibly want and more. I'd love to see more of these least used airports. Thank you Noel!!
2:30 you haven't been to the South until you've eaten at a Waffle House!
Some of the best R&B music of the 20th century was recorded in Muscle Shoals, AL.
Hi Noe; when all his covid is over would love to see some least used airports in Australia.
Absolutely!
Boutique just annouced a new flight to my home airport and now I'm super excited to check out their product, it looks amazing!
Feels like "Route 66" for planes. Great video !!
Thank you for your flight reviews and appreciation of American airports and airlines. I like your Gatwick Airport, London. Stay safe and healthy. Bon voyage.
Can’t wait for the other states, especially Alaska
Busch plane hops across Alaska would be fun.
@@bagnome Flying on bush planes in Alaska is awesome. A couple years ago I did an aerial tour of Kodiak Island on a float plane and I saw some of the most beautiful sights I've ever seen in my life on that flight.
I love the look on your face when Hannity was spewing his garbage. LOL
Another skull with no brain inside. That's normal for dookeycrats.
Thanks Noel for all the videos. I discovered your channel sometime last year and since then your videos give me company during my meals since I live alone. Your content is really great, and the way you discover untapped airlines and destinations in different parts of the world is truly amazing. Keep up the good work and stay safe.
I stumbled across your videos yesterday and have been watching hours worth of videos since. Excellent work, mate!
Welcome aboard! Thanks for watching!
This video reminded me of a flight I piloted where I got just above the cloud layer for some stunning colors.
Unfortunately I lost my medical since then, but videos like this give me a small dose of that passion back. Thank you!
Great video Noel. Would love to see more videos where you go for a quick look around some smaller, lesser known towns.
I live about 30 minutes north of Muscle Shoals. I didn't expect you to visit, but glad you did.
As a resident there, Is there a Greyhound bus Noel could have taken to Birmingham? I'm surprised there's no Shuttle Van to the Birmingham Airport from Muscle Shoals Airport. A lot of places have a shuttle to the biggest City.
It’s still bigger than my local airport in North Dakota.
If you're interested in music, Muscle Shoals might be one of the most important places on the planet.
Yes when I heard Noel mention Muscle shoals all I could think of was the studio/ rhythm section.
The Hit Recording Capital of the world was NO JOKE. IT was the Hit Recording Capital of the world in the 60s and 70s , in part Because of Rod Stewart, Joe Cocker, Steve Winwood and Trafic ,George Michael.lulu Cher,Aretha, julian lennon , Dire Straits and and many many more like paul CARTNEY AND MICK JAGER FOUGHT OVER Records made by a black man named Arthur Alexander. Paul won the rights to the song by Alexander called, Anna Come to Me. MIck got the 'consolation prize which was Alexander's big hit, you Better Move on. Great times for the Shoals and of course the music industry kept the Airlines busy back then. The Shoals was pretty much a NO RACISM AREA COMPARED TO THE REST OF THE COUNTRY. AND IT was the rule in the Recording studios.
I'm shocked they sent you to Birmingham instead of Huntsville! Glad you made it though!!
been looking forward to this all week :D
Yeah, so have I. Noel and James Asquith YT keep me glued to my screen waiting for new videos
British ex-pat (I live in Texas for 20 years now), and my wife drives a Chevy Colorado truck. They are pretty classic mid-size trucks. Noel, If you think it was a great BIG truck, you need to drive a dually (with four wheels on the back) with the largest engine you can get. One of those would make the hair grow back on your head. HAHAHAHAHA.
I appreciate the irony of you ending up in Birmingham 😂
Interestingly, I flew to Nashville from the Silicon Valley of California (in the San Francisco Bay Area) just two weeks ago and spent a week in the Muscle Shoals area. I had no idea that there was an airport there. By the way, I had a blast visiting Florence, Sheffield and Tuscumbia.
Noel has been on more flights in 3 months than I have in 6 years
Same here. Noel and James Asquith YT make me feel like I need to travel more
As soon as I saw LEAST USED, my instant thought was "He's copying Geoff"
No ones gonna comment on the fact that, that one girl was staring at noel so hard like 5 times haha
She still thinks Trump won the election!
Sweet home Alabama
Now you know why the rest of America doesn't go to Alabama.
it is truly the arshole of America
no, that honor goes to all of the blueballs states who burn down their on shitties and then make Americans pay for rebuiliding them. boy.
I reallly liked the more ‘vlog style’ approach to this vid where you covered the flight and the destination too. Felt like I was there too!
Awesome video.I loved the mix of flying and visiting this little town.Once again, great job!
Noel thats was fantastic keep doing these videos just great i mean the people are so friendly i never knew there was an least used airport i really enjoy it hope you make more of these videos cheers
Noel your channel is better than most American television. You are a skilled presenter.
Beautiful plane, I would love to have a Pilatus one of these days. And what a long drive for someone from way out of town, that had to be one of those "out of your comfort zone" moments.
American Airlines (Eagle) used to fly in/out of there. I used it all the time when I was a travel nurse and needed to make short visits. The staff there were so nice. They recognized me everytime I arrived. Once they even commented on my new suitcase 🤣
Great stuff. I flew into Muscle Shoals in the late 90s. Happy days...!
You need to come to Cleveland....home of rock and roll! You’ll love it. Would be happy to show you around. Great food scene here. Beautiful area.
The best part of my Sunday! Loved the video as always!
I keep looking forward to Noel and James Asquith YT videos all week long
I live in Huntsville. Welcome to northern Alabama! Hope you enjoy your time here!
Please do many more small boutique type airline videos. So much fun! And omg the pilot looks so young!!!
Muscle Shoals and Florence are pretty nice. Great music history there as well.
I stumbled upon your videos a few nights ago. I very much enjoy seeing all your travels across the world so imagine my surprise to see you in the place I'm from. I did scream "no!!" At my TV when you stayed at the Red Roof Inn.
Haha! A lovely town! But the hotel was an interesting experience 😅
Great video, as always! Thanks for lightening my dour mood.
I like Noel's videos as well they are top notch just like James Asquith YT videos
Prob my fav Vlog to date from Noel, really enjoyed, exactly the sort of avdenture i love doing.
I’m so glad to see you up in North Alabama! I live Huntsville! Not very common to see reviews out of MSL!
Seemed like so much fun flying with these guys, now I want to travel just to fly out of this airport, great video.
When I was younger, my sister and I used to take small planes out of Plattsburgh, NY. The Clinton County Airport on Continental Airlines. They would fly a 12 seat plane, I can't remember which model it was, but it was very similar to these. Pre TSA and pre extra security. It was very very surreal and serene going to Albany NY to catch flights elsewhere. Now Plattsburgh has a larger airport, but it was so nice having the ease of the smaller flights with the college kids flying from New York City, Albany or Syracuse, NY. Most of the time now, we either drive to Albany, NY or Burlington, VT.
I heard a big RUclips say that when things go wring , they make the best vlogs...it’s true, loved the vid, so different.. helped substantially by noel’s good nature and sense of humour. And love the least used airport idea
Yes that’s why so many RUclipsrs manufacture catastrophes
Love the talk radio! So funny, I'm trying to get back to Harrods, Liberty, M&S, British Airways, Sunday Roasts, etc. You are excited for Alabama BBQ :)
I flew a roundtrip from MSL to ATL in 1981.The flight to ATL was a Republic DC-9-30 with a stop in HSV.The return was a Republic Convair 580 with no stops.
Noel, love your videos! The reason for the high rental car rate is due to Covid. Rental car companies (especially Hertz) had to sell off about 40% of the total fleet in order to keep money coming in. Unfortunately, due to the worldwide chip shortage, getting new cars back into the fleet has been slower than expected. Basically demand right now is much higher than supply in many parts of the US. If you locked in a price a few months ago, you'd be good, but "newer" reservations are paying a lot more.
That and Hertz has closed some locations. I'm driving to NJ with a friend next week to move some things back from his parents house. I've told him for the last ~2 months to get a rental car reserved. He looked on Sunday. Four of the five Hertz locations in Omaha (including the airport ones) are "permanently closed" and the one that was still open had no vehicles available. A minivan from the other companies ranged from ~$1800 - 2400 for two weeks. Thankfully he has a friend that travels a lot and was able to get him a much more reasonable rate with Avis.
I miss Alabama. Flew PC-12 once on the right seat. Round trip Montgomery, AL to Orlando, FL, dropping off a family to a vacation in Disney World. First time setting the altimeter to 29.92. Beats the Warriors and Skyhawks I normally fly by far.
There's actually not a downtown in Muscle Shoals proper. See, Muscle Shoals is one of four small adjacent cities (Muscle Shoals, Florence, Sheffield, and Tuscumbia) that make up what's known as "The Quad Cities," or simply "The Shoals." Florence has the main downtown with pedestrian oriented shopping, banks, places to eat, and a bunch of bars/pubs/music venues. Sheffied and Tuscumbia have smaller, but nice downtowns. Locals consider The Quad Cities area to be one city though.
Love this video... Please more of this style of crazy situations if possible!
I like that the right curtain got pulled over and revealed the right part of the window..... views of the Silverado all night, lovely
Great Video Noel, I love your adventures!
Same here, I enjoy Noel's adventurous content. They also remind me of James Asquith YT
Awesome video Noel! Loving the USA trip so far 😁
Loved it, a great insight into day today life and some beautiful aviation footage..that climb out of the clouds into the sun was sublime. Great to see a bit of Alabama too. More more more of these mini adventures, I love these smaller airports and towns and love meeting the people you run into too and I wonder if I’m the only person who immediately Google street views the airport and places you visit.. ( there was a Burger King if u walked in the other direction lol!)
Noel, just think: Sweet Home Alabama. Oh I miss Sweet Tea, grits and hush puppies. Lived in Alabama 30 years ago. Drove up and down the state and spent time in Pensacola. Great video. Their is a small airline in California called Surf Air that also flies the PC 12.
Funny thing is that I found one of your videos recommended after I watched one of Geoff Marshall’s videos. Really like this idea of visiting the least used airports, please keep it up!
Great video! And as always, you have the best music accompaniments!
I liked the twist and turn of your journey!!
Great content Phil
So glad when I come across someone who really knows how to travel. You're down south, so Chick-Fil-A, BBQ and sweet tea! Yes! Save the Bangers and Mash for when you get back to the UK! Experience what each place has to offer! I'd buy you a local brew here in DEN, but you've probably already moved on.
Muscle Shoals is where great music was recorded. The Stones were there many times in the 1960s
I know another person in the comments recommended Burlington International Airport, but I really really love BTV. The restaurant they have there is excellent, you can see f-35s take off on the same runway, and it’s small and cozy. Plus you can fly from there to Boston, NYC, Canada, etc. The view as you take off over Lake Champlain is unlike anything I’ve ever seen. The Lake Champlain waterfront has ice cream, shopping and an aquarium. If you ever get the chance, Noel, you MUST come here.
The Swampers were the studio musicians at one of the local studios.
I think they also played on a few R&B recordings as well.
Love watching you Noel, taking me all over the world .I love planes and Airports too.
.Keep up the good work and keep safe too.
Thank you Glad you like them!
Right now Noel I would fly to Birmingham England or Aberdeen just to get on a plane, what an awful motel!
