  • This video is part 5 of 6, and goes through step by step how to solder glass for an Art Deco inspired rainbow suncatcher. I go over the tools and methods/processes I use to solder stained glass. I enjoy making these videos for fun and to hopefully help someone learn more about my favorite artform. Hope you enjoy!
    Check out my Instagram for a chance to win this finished suncatcher at the end of this series.

    Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge and talent! I attempted to learn stained glass during COVID through RUclips. Just as I thought I was comfortable enough to finally solder…life took over and I recently started getting my tools together and watching RUclips tutorials again… I’m pretty sure I have seen them all up until two years ago. I truly appreciate that you took your time to explain not only how to make the beautiful rainbow piece… you ALSO explained why and your technique. Giving us additional information and tips has been much appreciated! I was losing hope that I would see a “ beginner “ tutorial with ALL the information needed and actually explaining each step! Thank you, thank you, thank you! I am looking forward to watching/learning the rest of your videos! Beautiful work! Learning from your grandfather is so special as well!

      I'm glad to hear that you are finding these videos helpful. Learning a new craft online can be so difficult. Just remember, there are so many different methods and techniques out there, there isn't just one right way to do everything. I wish you lots of luck, and have fun!

    Have you ever tried doing a jump ring in a “U” shape and solder the tails into a seam. In my opinion it is a much better look

    What metal are the jump rings? My daughter and I are having the most trouble with attaching the jump rings. It looks so simple when you do it, but when we do it they just melt off and we have to start over.

      I'm using pre-tinned copper jump rings. You can also use plain copper jump rings (you just have to tin them yourself). Make sure you add flux to both the hump ring and where you're attaching it. You might need to turn your iron temp down a little too, if you're having an issue with the solder just melting off.

      @@SamanthaAshleyGlass Thank you so much for your response. I love your videos. I ordered a temperature regulator. I’m sure that’ll help. I’m a newbie, but I’ve LOVE stainglass so far. It’s so challenging, but rewarding.

    does your iron hover over the copper foil or touch the copper foil when applying the solder?

    What size hobby came do you use for the glass nuggets? I would love to give this method a go 😃

      I use the 5/64th hobby came - it adds such a finished look!

      @@SamanthaAshleyGlass there are so many lead came products it blows my mind. I've seen one in the UK described as for suncatchers. It's stillemans 2mm x 3.5mm do you think this would be the same?

      @@janerobo5911 I just looked that one up and it looks right. 5/64" is roughly 2mm 👍

    What size tip are you using with your iron?

    • @SamanthaAshleyGlass
      @SamanthaAshleyGlass  Год назад

      I believe this was the 3/16" tip that came with the iron, but usually I like to use a smaller 3mm tip T19-D32
