- The history of Taipei's Metro systems (Taipei Metro, Taoyuan Metro, and New Taipei Metro) from 1996 to 2021 and their future expansion plans up to 2030 are shown in this animation.
Note on station numbers
The official station count of Taipei Metro is 131 as of 2021 which counts interchange stations multiple times, once for each line with exception of 4 stations (Ximen, Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall, Guting and Dongmen which provides cross-platform interchange and only counted once),
For this video, interchange stations are only counted once with exception of 2 stations (Banqiao and Xinpu - Xinpu Minsheng which require passengers to leave paid area for interchange)
Interchange stations between different operators are recounted for each operator.

I'm from Taipei and seeing everything presented like this is so effing cool!
I was born and raised in America but my parents are Taiwanese and so I’ve gone to Taipei numerous times over the years: every 1.5-2.5 years, starting with my first trip for my grandparents to see me at 5 months old. The oldest metro map I remember was from 2005 when I was actually finally old enough to understand and remember them, and since then every time we go back, we always like to see how the metro map has changed, but over the years I’ve forgotten how it looked like at certain times. This video has definitely brought back memories. Thank you!
Thanks Metro Liner for making the history of Taipei metro. I hope somebody who has planned the trip to Taipei urban area can understand to take these metro systems.

我等好久了!!!!終於有台北捷運的了!!!>
笔尖,你在开玩笑吧。🐸🐸🐸
Awesome animation thanks. I'll never forget the Bannan line opening in 1999. I moved to Taipei in 1998 and before that line opened I had to take either the bus, trainc taxi or ride my scooter everywhere. I was so excited when I could start taking a Jieyun MRT.
Do you by any chance have any recording of that occasion?
@@ShippoHsu unfortunately not sadly mobile phones didn't have cameras in those days
Thanks for introducing, our metro system is quite young compare to other's city transit in asia
Delhi metro is younger. It was started in 2002, and now has 380 km of tracks.
Actually, there are not many "older" metro systems in Asia. Taipei's one was already pretty extensive the last time I was there, compared to most Asian cities I have been!
The Taipei metro system’s been the top 3 I’ve been in any RTSs of all times. Thanks for making this and reminding me of my good memories in Taiwan 🍻
Revising : (sorry for my poor English)
0:17 - The Official Traditional Chinese name of Taipei Zoo station should be 動物園 (Zoo), without the 臺北 (Taipei) word.
0:25 - The English name of Tamsui station in 1997 should be Tamshui, they change the name to Danshui in 2003 first and then change it to Tamsui in 2011, while its Chinese name remains the same.
1:41 - When Neihu Line (內湖線) opened in 2009, they abbreviated Muzha-Neihu Line as "Zha-hu Line" (柵湖線). However some people think the abbrieviation to be inelegant due to its pronouncement which is same as a term in mahjong which means "Fake it to win the game". They change the official name to Wenhu Line (文湖線) at last.
Actually this video includes three different systems of subway/metro, which consists Taipei Metro (台北捷運), New Taipei Metro (新北捷運), and Taoyuan Metro (桃園捷運). They are owned and operated by three different city but are all situated in Greater Taipei Area (includes Taipei, Xinbei, Keelung, Taoyuan).
Thanks! The taoyuan metro has beautiful stations, especially taoyuan HSR and Taipei Main Station
Thanks for the info! Yes! Romanization of almost all station names (not just Tamsui) changed throughout years so I struggled a little to figure out which stations are which (e.g. Hsin Peitou→Xinbeitou, Chichang→Qizhang, Hsintien→Xindian etc.)
@@MetroLiner I prefer the original romanization plan, I think its pronunciation is closer to English! (Taiwanese here, thanks for making this amazing video!)
@GaberPlaysGamep
“Taipei, Xinbei, Keelung, Taoyuan” in the last line of the text should be “Taipei, New Taipei, Keelung, Taoyuan”.
The official name of 新北 is “New Taipei” instead of “Xinbei” (hanyu pinyin) or “Hsinpei” (wade-giles)
@@hzpj TBH one could also argue on the contrary that the old system creates ambiguities, where your example Chichang can be misread completely as pinyin. Pinyin does have the issue though of iu and ui getting mispronounced all the time.
That’s one system I can check off from my bucket list. Thanks!
yay!
Update October 2022: the extension of the red line beyond Xiangshan apparently won't be complete until late 2023. Keelung is also planning to build a metro that will connect to both blue lines. And in Taoyuan, there is an orange and a brown line planned and the green is also expected to loop around to the end of the purple line.
They should make the taoyuan line just continue to Keelung
終於等到了!Thanks for making Taipei Metro!!! 🇹🇼
Thanks a lot!!!! I’m a Taiwanese subscriber and I’ve always enjoyed your video. I like this one especially❤️
Nice! Suggestion? Maybe make the transition from the current network to the future planned expansions more obvious? I find that I sometimes miss the transition.
This video is so cool!
It's fun to see the history and future of the MRT system.
Brings back a lot of memories.
Taking the bus from Kunyang to the Brown Line before they were connected... 😅😅😅
Yes indeed. I remember I had to take the bus and or train from Academia sinica to Taipei station until the Bannan Blue line opened in 1999. I was so excited when I could start catching a Jieyun MRT subway to the CBD and Ximending.
Congrats, the video is very good and informative

If possible, I am wondering if you could add Northern region commuter line of the Taiwan Railway into the video? It is also a vital public transportation system for the Greater Taipei residents. It runs from Hsinchu Taoyuan Taipei Keelung Yilan. Almost a million of riderships between these cities daily~
That is traditional rail, and not included under the metro service.
Additionally, we would have to travel back to 1887, where Liu Ming Chuan suggested the first route from Keelung to Taipei.
Wow 超有質感的影片!
A special fact:You can reach Taipei Main Station with only one transfer at most
I haven't been to Taiwan in a long time, hopefully I can visit there again

Curious about what do you think of the metro lines' naming scheme? Do you like pure words like this and MTR (东铁线), or like pure digit/word like most metro system (1,2,3...A.B.C), or like something mixed like Beijing subway of using both (1,2,3...S1...昌平线...)?
Actually we also named it simply by use initial of the colors:
e.g. Wenhu Line is BR for brown.
Bannan Line is BL for blue.
Tamsui-Xinyi Line is R for red.
Danhai LRT is V because of vermilion.
And passengers can find them easily in the entrances, stations, and platforms.
I think for tourists/visitors number/alphabet system is easier to follow, but for locals, lines with location name are more easy to understand.
@@Lumpy970253 I know this, it also being used in Taipei. But for a system like Beijing subway, with 24 lines, and already using all kinds of green/blue/pink... Even colors are not enough....
@@MetroLiner The thing is, some lines is extending far into city center, making it serving not purely its said place. Also some "tragedy" like 1-Batong (thorough operation just started recently), 4-Daxing line, that train runs thoroughly, no need to change, but it operate as "separate" lines. Causing passengers confused. Also the most disturbing line "Subway line S1" Maglev train, it use the original S1 suburban train plane (from S-Bahn naming scheme), but almost at same year we have another S1 in a real commuter rail runs by national rails... Beijing has 4 S-train lines, though not convenient to use.
@@fhs7838 It was proposed it uses numbers to represent these lines at one time in 2014, but has not been adopted. I don't know the reason tho, probably we'll run out of the color someday xD
Very good!
That's stunning :)
Do singapore next!
I think there's a mistake:
At first the English names aren't translated by pinyin, it was changed in the 2000s
Thank you ❤️❤️❤️
Taipei MRT is the most cleanest, affordable, and safest metro systems I’ve ever experienced. Far much more safer than New York City.

I think you forgot the Keelung Metro will integrate with Metro SB Line in Datung Road Section.
目前這段好像還在爭議 不太清楚路線
When will that occur?
A Wanda-Zhonghe-Shulin line station near my house plan to be finished in 2022, now it's delayed so much that I can't use it since, by the time it finished, I had already graduated.

做規劃時令人熱情高漲,實際建設時慢得離譜
So the Metro Liner's criteria for inclusion of planed extension is: if a plan is not likely to be finished in time, it's included; otherwise, not.

Make one video about Budapest metro. Opened in 1896, it is the second oldest metro sistem in Europe and also all over the world. In addition, it is the oldest electrified metro.
Shit i didn't know that.
One more line is missing...where's the keelung metro/train?
Its planned route has been changed again and again, so maybe this is why he didn't put it on.
