  • This hour-long, one-on-one interview program provides a wonderful look inside the life of poet and educator Nikki Giovanni. Taped live in Atlanta, Georgia at Georgia Public Broadcasting on Saturday, June 18, 2005, this program was the eighth in The HistoryMakers' An Evening With... PBS-TV series. Writer, novelist and playwright Pearl Cleage interviews her former childhood babysitter Nikki Giovanni in front of a standing room only audience.
The program begins with three Atlanta-based spoken word artists performing one of Giovanni's poems, Ego Tripping (there may be a reason why), and then Pearl Cleage introduces Nikki Giovanni. During the interview, Giovanni talks about her childhood, the origins of her writing career and discusses her feelings about young people and hip hop culture. Throughout the interview, there are performances by spoken word artists reciting Giovanni's poems.
Through the use of historic film footage and live performances, An Evening With Nikki Giovanni provides a profound look into the wonderful life of one of the world's most outstanding spoken word artists.

I saw a Nikki giovanni at 28 + years old and she was on the same level on beauty as hally berry if not more so in my opinion... It's hard to believe that she's always been way too humble..

How a person looks very often has very little to do with how humble they are. It is the experiences in life they have had, that create the personality they have. If a person does not experience support, love, encouragement and safety in childhood they will likely grow up with less confidence than someone who grows up in a safe, loving, supportive environment.

With all due respect I think Nikki Giovanni, it's like a piece of gum.... She's good until she's not. Some of her messages, her words are chewable and should be absorbed, but some needs to be spit out. The latter is not said to be disrespectful. I believe that her lens is very tunnel vision. So she doesn't see how some of the MEN that she's centered are also toxic to the community.
She has a way because of her artistic lens to separate the art from the person... Which we all do to a certain extent. But when you make that toxic person somewhat of a martyr... Then it becomes cringy to me despite the art.
