Is this the Maori language??? What a beautiful language!!!!!! And good of Lorde to appreciate native cultures and actually help raise funds for the causes she says she cares about. Somehow, this version is even more serene than the English one

Kia ora! I'm from Uruguay (South America) and this album was realised right after I got a kiwi friend who is helping me to learn English, so, thanks to this happenstance, I ended up knowing about te reo Maori and I'm fascinated because of its beautiful sound, I love Maori names for birds, trees, places, and I even learnt to say the full name of Taumata Hill haha. Your culture is beautiful, I'm glad Lorde did these versions of her songs!

I just can't stop loving the poetry in her lyrics. I mean, every song is a poem, yet hers are always layered with so many meanings. It's just like as if every word coming out of her was made to be meant of so many others.
And that up above is meant for the sounding of it, the music she makes, it also tells us a story. What I mean is, damn, she could sing/write about a trash can receiving more trash and probably that would be amazing.

It's fine that she's appreciating the cultures, I personally have no problem with it, but to say it is her culture is just ignorant to the struggles of Māori people and the genocide of their language and culture etc.
I'm glad she's showing appreciation to a culture she grew parallel to but was never close with. A culture still not as known to the world, misrepresented often. I'm glad she's giving Māori language Māori people a platform through this.

    • @tewaewae
      @tewaewae 3 года назад +12

Kai It is her culture cause Te Reo is taught used and understood by a wide diverse range of New Zealanders, not just Maori. . That alone makes it part of NZ culture. You can't chop up modern NZ culture along racial lines. If a language is an official language of a country, it"s part of that's country's culture. Sure NZ has a shitty history of coloniailaisation but no one gets to tell another Kiwi what is and isn't their culture based on their bloodlines. Now traditional ciulture, that's a totally different debate.

@@kezkai A little unnecessary to go in that hard on folk that don't have any clue about New Zealand. Lorde has never laid claim to being a Maori, and in fact has gone to some length to explain that interviews in the past. They meant zero offense. You're actually labeling the previous suppression of Te Reo as "genocide"? In the comment section of a young New Zealander's beautiful tribute to that language? WOW. The translation of these songs is not cynicism and I'm certain you're not familiar with the vast majority of other folks cultural struggles either. Take a chill pill.

Got a wishbone dryin' on the windowsill in my kitchen
Just in case I wake up and realize I've chosen wrong
I love this life that I have, the vine hangin' over the door
And the dog who comes when I call, but I wonder sometimes what I'm missin'
Well, my hot blood's been burnin' for so many summers now
It's time to cool it down, wherever that leads
'Cause all the beautiful girls, they will fade like the roses
And all the times they will change, it'll all come around
      I don't know
Maybe I'm just stoned at the nail salon
Maybe I'm just stoned at the nail salon again
Got a memory of waitin' in your bed wearin' only my earrings
We'd go dancin' all over the landmines under our town
But the sun has to rise, when it does, we'll divide up the papers
Two former hell-raisers, I'm still crazy for you, babe
Well, my hot blood's been burnin' for so many summers now
It's time to cool it down, wherever that leads
'Cause all the music you loved at sixteen, you'll grow out of
And all the times they will change, it'll all come around
      I don't know
      Maybe I'm just
Maybe I'm just stoned at the nail salon again
      Oh, make it good
      Oh, make it good
I'd ride and I'd ride on the carousel
'Round and 'round forever if I could
But it's time to cool it down
      Whatever that means
Spend all the evenings you can with the people who raised you
'Cause all the times they will change, it'll all come around

The song is good enough in English but it suits well in here---sounds more pleasant to the ears with this language like they are made for each to collaborate.
