  • Professor Tim Noakes was born in Harare, Zimbabwe in 1949. As a youngster, he had a keen interest in sport and attended Diocesan College in Cape Town. Following this, he studied at the University of Cape Town (UCT) and obtained an MBChB degree in 1974, an MD in 1981 and a DSc (Med) in Exercise Science in 2002.
Prof. Noakes has published more than 750 scientific books and articles. He has been cited more than 19 000 times in scientific literature, has an H-index of 71 and has been rated an A1 scientist by the National Research Foundation of South Africa for a second 5-year term. He has won numerous awards over the years and made himself available on many editorial boards.
In 2012, Tim founded 'The Noakes Foundation', a Non-Profit Corporation founded for public benefit which aims to advance medical science’s understanding of the benefits of a low-carb high-fat (LCHF) diet by providing evidence-based information on optimum nutrition that is free from commercial agenda. The foundation has also started the Eat Better South Africans campaign, which allows South Africans in even the poorest communities to adopt a high-fat, low-carb, extremely healthy diet for just three dollars per day.
More recently, the foundation has developed 'The Nutrition Network', which is a certification and training program for doctors who want to prescribe a high-fat, low-carb diet to their patients. The platform has been designed exclusively for medical practitioners across all disciplines, covering the latest and most up-to-date science and research in the field of Low Carb Nutrition (nutrition-netw...)
Prof. Noakes has a passion for running and is still active, running half marathons when he can. He is a devoted husband, father and grandfather and now, in his retirement, is enjoying spending more time with his family.

Sixty years ago I began my training in Medical Science and have followed the guidelines as taught. This last year I was diagnosed diabetic type 2. I am so angry that all this information was available then and not heeded. I was a biochemist I should have known. I can only hope I can reduce my I.R. with my diet so I can live another 10 years, without meds. the British new recommendations for patients with obesity and diabetes is a 800 calorie diet of shakes and soups for 3 months. No mention of carb restriction or fats. I despair.

Joan V. Bruce it’s woeful in UK but big Pharmacie and / or processed food companies can not make money out of low carb eating ...especially if you cook your own food etc ...profits profits and profits ...800 cal a day is not sustainable and has long term metabolic negative effects on the body - eventually they will return to their normal eating pattern - gain more weight and become more diabetic than they were ...you only have to look how processed food companies etc are cashing in on vegan highly processed foods ...disgusting stuff... but that’s the way society functions now ...ignore the real science and go with what is most profitable or virtue signals your environmental credentials !

When you get right down to it, I can believe in any man, who is capable of admitting he was wrong. Doesn't matter who he is, doesn't matter what he was wrong about. All I know is, it takes a lot of courage to stand up, and just say 'sorry folks, I was wrong'. The reason I like Tim Noakes, is because he did just that, when he changed his mind on carbs. That, more than anything, is the reason I trust his assessment on carbs vs fats. Real men don't choose the path of least resistance, they choose the truth, no matter how hard the course might be.
I believe in you Tim. Stay strong mate.

Thanks for the great video. We live in a very sad world where lay people can no longer trust their doctors and scientists to tell them the truth and help them to get better! This means that ordinary people with no medical training like myself need to research and understand quite advanced scientific and biological concepts. I sometimes feel like I’m undertaking a part-time medical degree in my spare time just so that I can help myself overcome this dreadful insulin resistance...

Christa Wild , very well said. I did a couple of months of research as well to educate my self. I know now how my specific body works and tweaks I’ve made along this insulin resistance. Sad that my Medical Dr. Still has their dietitian call me up and try and convince me I need to eat at least one piece of fruit a day , some brown rice and quinoa. No I say, it spikes my blood sugars. Dieticians: “ Well we can give you a medication that will aid in keeping your blood sugars from spiking” OMG! And their relentless. On their dietI just got sicker. Dr. Jason Fung and his books and videos IF and Keto after a year 68 lbs. blood sugars normal, liver enzymes normal, tri, hdl, ldl below normal . Insulin resistance is a true battle. We warrior on. My doctor is blown away! Even sent me an email congratulating me.
Funny I got an general email recently that goes out to all patients that they now have a Intermittent Fasting Class for weight loss and type 2 diabetes.........

Recognizing that the doctors and scientist cannot be trusted is a good step in the right direction. Really, who can we trust? At best, if even the worlds most studied and greatest mind are totally honest, they really just don't know. So we learn what we can as much as we're inclined to make effort and make our best guess. As if the medical research isn't task enough, we ned to learn farming, food storage and prep because the food supply that is available we can be fairly certain isn't at all safe to eat. After all that is said and done, mind you don't step out in front of a bus.

Have you tried resistant starch yet? It is starch that resists digestion but feeds the beneficial bacteria in the large intestine. There have been about 20 clinicals on natural types of resistant starch since 2003, most showing improvement as soon as the next day. In 2016, the FDA approved a health claim that resistant corn starch improves insulin sensitivity and reduces the risk of type 2 diabetes. You can find all the details at www.ResistantStarchResearch.com.

I agree, we can not believe what most doctors tell us. There are a few (unfortunately none in my area) that get the correct picture of low carbs. However, when they go against the insurance guidelines with regard to blood test results and scripting statins to correct high triglycerides etc. some insurance companies send letters to the doctor advising that they are not treating according to protocol and scripting statins and should do so. I suspect big pharma may have a roll in this.
IMO some doctors are afraid to change as they don't want to go through what Prof. Noakes went through, or lose their license.

Christa Wild... well I am 73 years old, have had high cholesterol most since I was 46 (my first cholesterol test) so maybe all my life. At age 73 I was diagnosed with pre diabetes (41) in New Zealand, I dropped most carbs and all grains, and dropped it to 38, in 5 months. It just makes sense, it used to be called "sugar diabetes" in the old days, emphasis on "SUGAR". Now if you lactose intolerant, then your doc will advise you to steer clear of dairy, if you are gluten intolerant doc will advise you not to eat foods containing gluten. If you are allergic to peanuts doc will tell you to stay away from peanuts. But if you are glucose intolerant (resistant) they will tell you you can still eat carbs!!. I go really low on carbs, and have turned the corner, so don't give up. I don't take any medication at all, I swimm 5 days a week and do resistance exercises 2x per week and walk trails 2x per week. I find low/no carb plus exercise to bee good for all that ails me. Cheers.

I don't think you realise the problem. What you have done is decrease your triglycerides but increased your cholesterol. What happend to your TC/HDL ratio or HDL:LDL ratio. TG/HDL is misleading as it does not account for TC. Complex carbohydrates are not toxic that is a myth spread by industry.

Read The Great Cholesterol Myth. Over half the people who have heart attacks and strokes have normal or low cholesterol levels. The only type to worry about is the tiny oxidized LDL. Sugar and edible oils cause that. The lower your triglycerides the fewer oxidized particles you likely have.
Having very low cholesterol readings increases your likelihood of death from all causes.

I looked up how he died as I couldn't remember and what I found was fascinating! He found out he had pancreatic cancer in 2003 and turned down the surgery and instead ate fruits and veggies only for 5 years! Sometimes JUST fruit! He claimed to be a fruitarian! He literally fed his cancer! Meanwhile at the Paleo Medicina clinic they are curing cancer and Crohn's by eating meat only!

    • @TB1M1
      @TB1M1 4 года назад +5

Unlikely to be fruit. But in truth it depends on your genetics as simple sugars (some fruits are simple) can raise triglycerides. If you are active trigs are burnt easily, unike cholesterol which takes weeks to drop. Remember, triglycerides are secondary factor, cholesterol balance is more dominant as you age.

This is fantastic but of course so sad that this information was withheld since the 1930’s and throughout the decades. None of them had courage. Thank you for having a courageous heart. The medical institution where I receive my health care are still pushing the low fat , low calories, ....3- meals plus snacks. Almost a year ago I started Dr. Jason Fungs intermittent fasting....low carbs under 30-20 a day, healthy fats. I eat one meal a day 3-4 days a week then 18/6 and 20/4. Like to change it up. Used to be on 200 units insulin a day. Now some times 0 insulin or 10 units units a day. Just started switching over to metformin. Had 20 years of weight gain, carbs n sugar. My A1C was 9.6. Today it’s 5.2. It take a long time for someone with 20years of being obese and diagnosed w/ type 2 diabetes almost 10 years ago, and insulin resistance it’s very hard to lose the weight taking so much insulin. I’ve come a long way. But if one is allergic to peanuts you don’t eat peanuts right. ..... Well I’m allergic to carbs, sugar, fruit, gluten, wheat, corn. The list of what I don’t eat anymore is longer than what I can eat. Have Psoriatic Arthritis, used to have swollen feet ,pain severe inflammation. Skinny ankles and feet and calve now and my pain is almost nonexistent.

The one thing I DO worry about is ...the keto, LC-HF , IF proponents are just as passionate as the low fat pushers used to be. I hope the new way of thinking is correct, because lay people like me who are getting advice from the internet depend on these new thinking doctors to be correct in recommending restricted-carb way of eating. My blood results seem to confirm low carb is the way to go...and my weight loss. Kept 50 pounds OFF by eating keto...now trying "carnivore" since I am not eating carbs anyway...

I came upon your research 6 years ago and it changed my life. As a slightly overweight child I was put on an experimental diet by a foremost 'expert'. The diet included 90% NO fat carbohydrates (10% lean protein). Despite being active I gained 50 pounds in 1 year (which was incredible considering my age) and only came off the diet after my mother (the head ER nurse of a large hospital) became concerned with my blood test results.

High carb is the healthiest out there when it consists of beans, fermented foods, vegetables, nuts, fruits. But refined breakfast cereals, soda, candy bars are junk carbs (often with half calories from fat). Of course fats increase cholesterol, refined oils and refined sugars increase blood fats (triglycerides).

Yep, I agree, my father died 6 months ago because doctors complete neglect and just pumped him up with medications that eventually he had a severe hemorrhage from and never recovered. He died very slowly as every organ shut down. I miss him but I am not angry, I just miss him terribly because if anyone knew my dad you would have seen a Hercules, a man who would have lived till over 100 so easily - until the medical institutions told him otherwise and it all went downhill. I can't wait for the day that the whole medicine juggernaut worldwide is brought down to its knees for the senseless deaths of all the millions of people who actually had a chance to live. They didn't take their Hippocratic oath seriously. So they are responsible because there is no reason why they don't see the writing on the wall. When you spend time in a Palliative ward you see firsthand the senseless death that could have been avoided. And sadly you really see the suffering. It's just heartbreaking that this could have been avoided if there was no control of the health system.

ARE YOU TIRED OF WATCHING DIABETICS FALL APART?
Are you ready to really help them? Not TELL them. HELP them?
As a coach with over two decades of experience, I can tell you that KNOWING what someone needs to do is useless. Being able to MOTIVATE someone to actually make the change they need is EVERYTHING.
Diabetes is a tough disease. Not only having it, but trying to actually make sense of it in the vast morass of bad advice dished out by media, government, nonprofits, Big MED, and Big PHARMA is overwhelming. YOU know about ketogenic diets for diabetics. But the POWERS THAT BE say something different. They tell diabetics to eat 45-65% of their calories from SUGAR and cover that with insulin. That is utter madness.
So when you show up and tell a diabetic that a ketogenic diet can reverse their diabetes, put it into remission, and prevent any further damage from life-threatening diabetic complications... you sort of expect some thanks, right? But how often does that happen? Rarely, if ever.
This is NOT an issue with the information.
This IS an issue of MOTIVATION.
This IS an issue of BELIEF.
The information is one tiny piece of the puzzle. The MOST important thing is the BELIEF and MOTIVATION. You've got to help the diabetic BELIEVE a ketogenic diet can help them and get MOTIVATED to make the switch.
Kelley Pounds, the Low Carb RN put together a 4 part series to help you with that journey. From the scientific explanations, to navigating the official recommendations, to learning and practicing Motivational Interviewing skills to get patient buy-in and compliance, it's all there. If you really, REALLY want to help diabetics, these are four articles that are must reads.
Go read 'em! And report back with your comments. We've all got to get better at this or soon the whole world will be diabetic.

I know from experience what you mean,I went on a keto diet and lost 5 stone , my mother who has type 2 diabetes was very hard to convince to change her diet, but I finally got through to her. She lost a small amount of weight but the insulin that she injected was very high. Getting her doctors to help was very difficult. They insisted that 5 small meals a day consisting of mainly carbs was the recommended way to go. Even after she has a stroke, they still insisted on this diet. My mother was convinced by them and went back to her usual diet of bread, potatoes and mainly pre-packed "rubbish". She has fatty liver, cirrosis(non alcoholic),kidney disease, she has stents after a heart attack, also as I mentioned had a stroke. I even argued with a doctor (who said to her that one or two biscuits wont hurt) my mother is morbidly obese, she does not look like one or two biscuits is enough, that we change her diet and mentioned about my weight lost,he just did not want to know. It breaks my heart that I cant help her as doctors advice out weights mine.....my own doctor was impressed with my weight loss and when I told him how I had done it with the keto diet and fasting he hadnt even heard of keto. I still try and help my mum even cooking her healthy meals but I cant be there 24-7. Until doctors get on board with changing diets, people especially the older generation will keep on believing them......

I recently commented on one of these videos that I crushed chicharrones (fried pig skin) down to panko size in order to fry chicken. It was an idea I read a couple years ago. Apparently it has gotten popular because our grocer now stocks boxes of panko-sized fried pig skins (it's much easier and cheaper to crush your own). We used bad oil last time, but this time we used lard and bacon fat. It's the best tasting fried chicken I've ever had. Try it.

As for Ancel Keys, I think he had a lot of support and he was put into a position of power for a reason and I have a feeling it was for Pharmaceuticals and Governments. I just hope that people continue this health revolution and stand up to big pharma and corporations that have stolen our birthright to health from us and chained us to ill health. By the way since when did people as a whole consensus hand over our health to a GP or pharmaceutical company or a government? And why are people like Prof. Tim Noakes a threat to them when he is true to the human diet? And I feel sorry for those who don't have the courage to make a stand. If only they knew that together we are united in strength. In that 11 months, my trigs/HDL has dropped from 6x to 1.1x. Wish I'd know 25 years ago that I should have been focused on keeping triglycerides low, and that sugar is what drove triglycerides up. Your fantastic overview of understanding covid-19, and the academic boredom of lock down spurred me to look into some of your nutritional lectures. This one is great and and puts science behind what as GP I have suspected from my own experience and that of patients. Thank you. Our nation is overridden with fast foods and high sugar and processed carbohydrates. We also have a high at risk population with chronic illness and obesity- genetically predisposed to insulin resistance, gout, heart disease.... our government and health authorities and nutritionists would do well to take heed from this information when developing ways to manage these issues. They are also the population at greatest risk to succumb to covid-19 virus.

Alas, they will not “ take heed.” And the reason is MONEY. The Huge MANUFACTURED Food INDUSTRY is spending billions to see to it that only THEIR foods are publicly pushed by our government and most of those now in the medical field . Think Kellogg’s, General Mills, Morning Star Farms, The Orange Juice Companies. Look at the menus in our hospitals and nursing homes- they are OVERLOADED WITH HIGH CARBOHYDRATE CRAP even for those supposedly on a “ diabetic diet.” Worst of all : Our children are being “ poisoned” by the food available to them at our schools. The next generation is already having its health destroyed...imagine the dire results this will have on the sky-high costs of medical care in the future, to say nothing of the insane cost of medical insurance. 😱🥲

Thank you Prof. for this brilliant analysis. In medical school it was always a mystery to me why the 1st line drug for hypertensives was a diuretic. No one could explain this to me. I now realize it is because of hyperinsulinemia and its effect on the kidney: elevation of plasma insulin concentration within the physiological range has a marked antinatriuretic action. Incredible that all this valuable information has been suppressed to further an erroneous, harmful, and fatal agenda. I am even more amazed and disgusted that almost all MDs are still clueless re the detrimental effects of high carbohydrates causing hyperinsulinemia and insulin resistance with resultant chronic disease. Drs. Atkins and Kraft were geniuses. Atkins was vilified by the med establishment and Kraft's work was ignored.

Fantastic presentation that we should share with friends and with our doctors, especially if you get a blood test that shows high triglyceride. Your doctor may go straight to prescribing statins, but you can simply say "I'd like to try a very low carbohydrate (keto is very low) whole food diet first. How about I do that for 4 weeks and then get another blood test. If I can measurably lower my triglyceride with diet alone, without the cost and side effects of drugs, that would be better wouldn't it?" You probably need to be alcohol free as well. You can't blame your doctor as they did not get training in diet as a treatment for disease. That's why few mention it. A therapeutic diet isn't regarded as 'standard practice' but should be. We keep saying that there is no hard science on which diet is best. No adequate study is possible. I am not a science academic or doctor, but it seems clear that insulin resistance is the cause of chronic health problems of people over 45.
This is observable and measurable. Cutting carbs can reverse this and restore health.
Why do we need epidemiology studies? Just change to low carb and measure the parameters. Am I wrong?

Insulin resistance it's present now in children too thanks to those baby formulas full of HCFS and other sugars.

I've been full keto for just over a year. No more belly fat, lost 50 lbs, BP normal, joint stiffness gone, skin tags gone, gastric indigestion gone, but my triglycerides are still through the roof. My family doctor loses her mind when I try to talk to her. I AM ALONE 😕. I'm attempting Niacin on my own starting at 500mg and will move up to twice a day in a few weeks. Keep an eye on the hormones. On 88 of synthroid at the moment. There is a cardiologist in the city I live in that is LCHF, but I can't get a referral. So frustrating.

Reminds me of a saying, something like, "The lie wins the race before the truth finishes tying its laces."
If you're motivated by selfishness, you're not concerned with methodology and proving or disapproving a hypothesis. You're just using corrupt science as a propaganda tool. Those looking for the truth and who are concerned with the well bring of others, take their time to present the most factually accurate information possible.

I wish Id understood diet as a young person, all my life Ive had weight issues, mostly from about the age of eight when my mother took on the USA dietary guidelines of low fat high carb shite. I even had a lap band and although I lost weight it was not without continual weight regain due to trying to eat grains etc. once i started a lower carb diet I lost weight more easily and never felt hungry. Since covid I gained weight as I started eating cereal and biscuits and bread again, gain 7 kilo!!! Im back on the low carb with intermittent fasting and its coming off again and I feel way better

Ive cut down on carbs and it seems to have done a good bit for my health, i think you are onto something here. Problem is, carbs are everywhere... i mainly avoid starchy foods like bread and pasta which i dont really miss anyway. I havent given up my small portions of fruit as a pudding, i really cant give up on strawberries! I did however give up processed carbs and so glad i did ☺

Strawberries have been hybrids for almost 20 years. Tasteless & without nutrition compared to the strawberries of over 20 years ago.
