He's all bolster. He knows if he does anything, not only his life, but his family as well will die. I seen a video last week of him talking to his son.
I'd bet it was on the line of,
"Son, this will all be yours one day and you'll need to be strong and control not only the people, but the military as well."
Not,
"Son, I'm going to start a war, you, your mom, our family and friends will all be dead shortly after I start it."
And we won't be the only ones. I know, China will also be sending in their special forces as ours cross the border. Not to fight us, but to do the same thing our special forces will be doing. Looking for the norths other nuclear arms so they can't be fired. China does not want to have a bunch of America's nukes going off right next to their country. China has been having a horrible time trying to reign in Kim and with a troubling Kim to deal with, that keeps America's military on high alert and it's not where they want that. Especially with their own goals of wanting to bring Taiwan back under their control.
With all that said, is it possible? Yes, and if Kim goes off, he will most likely launch all or nearly all of his nukes. Use them or loose them. But he also has to know he will not survive, nor will his family! It will be a total decapitation of the entire Kim family once it starts. Not one family member will survive so that a Kim family member will never be able to take control, ever again.

You have a surprisingly astute assessment. Usually Americans are blinded by state propaganda to believe Kim is some sort of buffoon, which is clearly not the case.
If anything, we ought to be having a more cooperative tone with the North. You are totally correct that it isn't just a happy, friendly relationship between China and the DPRK. The Kim family would prefer to not just be total vassals to an enormously powerful China, they would prefer some degree of sovereignty, if not for true national love of the country, then at least for selfish purposes so as to not be dependent on China for their position.
It would be wiser for us to slowly but surely make amends with the North and seek a very slow transition to true peace. Korea, not North nor South, are natural allies of China. An accord could be reached, but we foolishly demand that their ruling class essentially remove themselves from power, which is an absurd request.
