Sadly it was. In the 90's, people did not think about the issues that are so heavy in the show the same as they do now. It wasn't able to reach all the places it could've been because of this. But, this revival is a completely different show, even to the point where the show was written and always meant to be this way and now because of our changing world, 28 years later it has reached its goal.

this show is like The lion king metts the little mermaid meets romeo and juliet. AMAZING! the costumes are not that good, but they should revive it, it would be awesome in this day and age!

If you can find a copy of the original cast recording I think you will really enjoy it! The new revival recording is also outstanding, but they are (as they should be!) delightfully different from each other and each has its own magical beauty!
I think it’s cool when you have a performance so close to your heart and totally love it, and believe it’s never gonna be topped. And then, the best musical revival comes on broadway and bam! You have an even better one.

It's actually based on Trinidadian author Rosa Guy's novel My Love, My Love which is of course, in turn, based on Anderson's classic tale. So you're still right! lol

They story is the same except one version the people were separate because of skin color and the other one was social class. So his production makes sense because they used social classes to spectate the people on the island
This is based on Hans Christian Anderson's The Little Mermaid. Also, the costumes aren't supposed that good or big and elaborate. This is a story being told by peasants to calm down a little girl during a storm.

This isn't actually one of the songs right? I listened to the whole soundtrack and I don't remember it. It sound just like a mish mosh of the songs. Sorry if this sounds stupid.
Love LaChanze, but this production appears to hold no candle to the 2018 version. Alex Newell alone as Asaka singing this number is far superior. I know it's 27 years ago...but it looks too "animated" for Broadway. Love love love the 2018 version, but appreciate the original production
SPJ W ibdisagree. Especially considering three tony award winning Broadwayshows of this year were in fact based on actual animated things (Spongebob, Frozen, And Anastasia). This production in terms of costumes looks rather whack. Like look at Ezrulie. U can’t tell by her costume that she’s a goddess. But anyway, I think the major difference here is 1) this stage probably isn’t what the actual show looked like hence the crappy background and 2) both Alex and Lilias have different takes on the song but both are still very much great. Lilias is more energetic and playful whereas Alex is in a way more guideful and motherly if that makes sense
I hear what you are saying, and in no way am I disrespecting what the actors did with the original production, just that my preference is for the 2018 version and the interpretation is much more to my liking.
the two productions are apples and oranges. Two completely different visions of the same material and it seems unfair to make judgements about this production based on the tony performance, which is only a sliver of the actual show and not within the original context

When Asaka went up the octave at 4:08 I think I blacked out for a few seconds.
