  • I uploaded this and the Will Rogers Follies clip from the 1991 Tony Awards because I coincidentally had seen both on Broadway shortly before this. Bought the tickets at TKTS at the World Trade Center location. We had no problem getting tickets because the shows had just opened. I recorded the Tonys on my VCR and found the tape over a decade later.

This is such an amazing musical. I've played in orchestra pits for about 40 years, all local productions here and there, wherever I have lived and this one, and this one has affected me more than any others. Every night during the performance, more than half of the pit was weepy during "How Could I Ever Know," and these are really cynical orchestra pit folks. I can't imagine why there has never been a movie version of the musical.

I was born in 1984. Went to my 1st Broadway show in New York, on Broadway, when I was 8 or almost 9 years old. It was Phantom. Then Secret Garden, then Les Mis, then Phantom again. Then South Pacific. I grew up listening in my big bird taped nighttime friend, from the 1980s, listening to Mozart’s magic flute, or Vivaldi’s Ring of Mystery. I love being exposed to musicals at an early age. I can’t carry a tune in a bucket, but I can appreciate them. And the Secret Garden original Broadway cast, is my absolute fing favorite original Broadway soundtrack. Ever. Mandy Patinkin, Daisy Eagan, etc. 100%. And I have a first edition book of the secret garden. And my favorite movie adaptation is a 1993 version.

    From husband DANNY BURSTEIN:
“This is a text I just got from Jessica Molaskey.
Thanks, Jess. It means the world to me. “
“There are no words. Only love right now for you and your family and our dear theater family. I don’t remember seeing the whole
Broadway community so gutted by a loss. Not ever. I guess because Becca seemed so other worldly, so born of a place that mere mortals only dream of. So full of light and genius. Yes genius when she opened her mouth. The music and love that poured out of her shining soul shall live forever. In a different time we would all gather on this Christmas Eve and hug you and drink something and sit shiva for your “shiska goddess” and remember stories. I can think of a story about 26 years ago when a troupe of actors went out to dinner in Southern California. We were a large loud table tucked in a corner of a restaurant. Someone, maybe it was our dear George, threw down the gauntlet to tell the dirtiest joke. I might have known one safe one. The winner of the evening was Becca who told joke after filthy joke until our stomachs hurt from laughing so hard. The jokes were somehow funnier coming out of that angelic human. I think she knew it.
The bottom line is we were better for knowing her. I guess that’s the whole point of this mysterious life. Leaving the joint a better place than before you got there. She sure did that. I know you have battalions of wonderful souls who love you. Just want to let you know that if you ever need a shoulder I’m here day or night. Who sleeps these days anyway. I love you.
    Xoxoxo Molaskey.
I was privileged to see & hear “Ms. Luker’s angelic voice” as Lily in THE SECRET GARDEN at the Saint James Theatre in 1991 & as Maria Von Trapp in the 1998 revival of THE SOUND OF MUSIC at the Martin Beck Theatre in NYC.
When I said earlier that we lost a lot of people this year...we indeed lost a LOT. We also recently lost NICK CORDERO (Bullets Over Broadway), MARIN MAZZIE (Kiss Me Kate, Passion, Ragtime) and ANNE REINKING (All That Jazz, Annie, Fosse). Broadway just got darker. R.I.P. to ALL WE LOST THIS YEAR.
I shed a tear for those who left us. So gutted...and destroyed watching Ms. Luker perform, proving once again the LOSS we have is great and irreplaceable. Ugh. 2020 can’t get over any sooner for me. It’s just too much....TOO MUCH.

I'll never not love this musical. It's right up there with "Wicked" for the Most Times I've Burst Into Tears Whilst Watching a Broadway Musical. I loved the music from the first time I heard the opening arpeggios; knowing that Inigo Montoya was playing Archie just bumped it into the stratosphere. I've seen several productions with varying budgets and cast -- and I think the best community theatre production I saw was in c. 1997 or 1998. The distinction? It starred a pre-celebrity Amanda Bynes as Mary (I think she was about nine) and Jenna Green (who went on to play Libby on Sabrina the Teenaged Witch and Nessa Rose in Wicked) played Martha. I ended up going back three times to see it (cuz I loved it and I was friends with the Bynes family at the time). (So basically, when I see she's in trouble again, it makes me sad beyond belief. But I digress....)
There's not a bad number in this show. A half-dozen of the songs have the potential to turn you into a blubbering pile of feels. If you're not choked up in the last 30 seconds, you MIGHT not have a soul. Just sayin.

Words can't describe what a tragedy it is that we don't have a professionally filmed version of this musical list we do with "Into the Woods" and "Hamilton." What a cast! It's very sad that the only preserved copy of their performances is some shaky bootlegs.

this lost out to the 'The Will Rogers Follies' (which won Best Musical) at the Tony's - booooo. Washington DC's Shakespeare Theater is doing this in December - can not wait - this is my fave musical.

Jonathan Goeldner This or Saigon should have won. Good choice having Daisy be nominated for featured actress though, since Lea's performance was unbeatable.

Sodapop246 8 Never saw it or heard it, could have put up good competition but Saigon is a masterpiece and Lachanze would had no chance against Lea Salonga.

tomgallowitz Saigon is amazing but defiantly look into Once on this Island the music is gorgeous and Lea Salonga is amazing but so is Lachanze in my opinion she was robbed of the tony

    • @tomgallowitz
      @tomgallowitz 7 лет назад

Sodapop246 8 Will look into it, but Lea is hard act to beat, so might be hard for to me to see anyone but her winning and actually Lachanze lost to Daisy Eagan in featured actress

I saw this in 1991 also -- one of my all time favorite musicals. If you go to the Library of Performing Arts at Lincoln Center they should have a full recording of the show, right?
