He is not one of the top Carnatic Flutist but THE TOP Carnatic flutist of our generation. No gimmicks, no skullduggery, no 100 kmph sancharas but pure music filled with utmost bhaava, which is a rare quality these days. If I remember correctly he had a fall out with the Chennai Sabha Mafia and he rarely accepted concerts outside Kerala.
I don't like to use the term "the Top" because that is so subjective. To me, Mali remains the best and beyond comparison despite all his idiosyncrasies. At the next level comes Shri KSG and Shri TS Sankaran. Having a fall out with the Chennai Sabha Mafia is sometimes a positive - Mali too had a fall out and never received any awards from them despite being one of the top Carnatic geniuses of the 20th century.

It is unfortunate sri. Gopalkrishna a very shy unassuming artist stopped playing in public for personal reasons when he was still in his top form.
I know ..very unfortunate..he has been a purist ...

I agree. perhaps he is not so good at the kind of relentless self promotion that Americanized Hi-tech ruled Carnatic music today suffers from
