PALEO PINES - Good Not Great... but Dinosaurs! | Quick 1.0 Review

  • On paper, Paleo Pines plays more or less like every other cozy farming simulator to come out in the last five years. But videogames aren’t made of paper, and Paleo Pines isn’t made like your average farming sim, because each of those fun if familiar cozy mechanics are reimagined here through the ridiculous and wonderful filter of dinosaurs, because why not?

    I'm in it for the dinosaurs and I already know this isn't a $60.00 triple A game. It's cute and it has dinosaurs, that's all I want.

    aww. if I wasn't already cuted out from 60+ hrs of Wylde Flowers, I'd probably grab it.

    • @MEGAthemicro
      @MEGAthemicro  11 месяцев назад +4

      Understandable! Wylde Flowers looks lovely-I'm surprised more cozy farming sims don't prioritize voice acting, as that seems to be what stands out most to me about WF.

    • @RWSCOTT
      @RWSCOTT 11 месяцев назад +2

      @@MEGAthemicro definitely! it's really more of a casual crafting game than others. some of it's a little tedious until you can afford upgrades, but yeah, the writing/voice acting/story/music is really high quality. I was totally caught off guard by how involved I got w/those characters.

      @@MEGAthemicro WF has the funniest line I've ever heard in a game: at a critical point, Tara has to collect offerings from the locals to replenish a magic spring. The butcher Yoshii says *"I don't really believe in all this magic stuff, but if you think throwing a steak in a fountain will help, have at it."* 🤣

    I have a game rec for you. It's out and about. Out and about is an upcoming foraging game, where you learn to identify plants and what you can make out of them such as herbal remedies, cooking dishes and carfts. They show you how to recreate them in real life! Expanding your gardening knowledge like teaching you companion planting, fishing, decorating, socializing and romancing is also a thing. They are now running their kickstarter campaign. Moreover, the team of Paleo Pines is working with them on the game, so I thought I would post it here.

      Thank you for the recommendation! I thought the title sounded familiar and then I realized I reached out to the devs about a month ago and asked for a review key when they're ready to distribute them. Hopefully I get one, in which case you'll be seeing an Out and About review from me closer to launch :)

    mu biggest issue with the game is the dreamstones. Dinos want to be in a herd/pack but you cant do that if you want to get all the dino species in the game? theres only 23 dreamstones from what i saw but 38 species. Its a dino ranch sim, why am i not able to collect all of them, let alone not have multiple of them?

    Great video on a cute game, but I was actually pretty annoyed by the flippant implication that it isn't next-gen enough and can be played on *gasp* outdated systems! What if that doesn't matter to gameplay, and you shouldn't need a 4090 to play a farming game? I'd prefer a lot less texture resolution shaming and a more thoughtful approach. Do the visuals match the style? Does the theme NEED 4K UHD RTX with HBAO and DLSS3? Then maybe leave the "it ran too well for me" part out.

    • @MEGAthemicro
      @MEGAthemicro  11 месяцев назад +2

      Thanks for the comment. I gather you prioritize gameplay over style, as do many, but visuals are incredibly important to many gamers. My channel tries to assign equal weight to each element of a game so I can strip as much of my personal bias away as possible and simply give you the truth. Paleo Pines definitely deserves some criticism for its low-res textures, as it looks downright bad at times. But, like you said, it's visually/thematically consistent and the 3D models are adorable, so I felt it earned a 3/5 in this category.

      Visuals don't make a game, look at Minecraft. Plenty of popular 2d pixelated games. If it's fun that's all that matters

      @@MEGAthemicro Games can look good and play terribly, which is a lot of AAA games these days. Good graphics, no substance. But some people like to play a variety of games. Some of us prefer to get a game for you know playing. If I wanted a badly written movie, I would go watch one. But seeing you didn't pay any attention to this games plot, it makes sense why you'd rather have a good looking game with a terribly written story.

      @@leightonrud66 Visuals can also make a game, look at Genshin Impact. Visuals may not be important for some people but what Mega is saying is that they are for others (i.e. me). Just because they aren't for you doesn't mean they aren't for someone else and I appreciate the input on them in this review. Keep up the good work MEGA!!!

    Can you house every dino in the game or do you have a very limited space?

    • @MEGAthemicro

      Yes, you can house 'em all, though you'll need to collect certain ones in order to unlock new space in your ranch.

    I bought this and played 15 hours and was disappointed by the mechanics, restrictive world, graphics, unhelpful map and storyline. Probably won’t keep playing. Great if you are into it for the dinosaurs only.

    • @MEGAthemicro

      I share many of your complaints and don't think the game presents much value (outside of collecting every dino) beyond that 10-15 hour mark.

    Would this be a game for my 7 year old?

    • @MEGAthemicro
      @MEGAthemicro  11 месяцев назад

      From a content standpoint, yes-everything here is 100% kid friendly. From a mechanical standpoint, maybe. Some of the design decisions are a little complicated/not particularly intuitive, so a child might get frustrated with the dinosaur taming process.

    Did you even pay attention to the story? You are NOT a kid sent to another farm. You're a person who left your family to go out and find more Paras like Lucky. It's almost like you didn't even play it. Or pay attention. Can't regard a review when you didn't even pay attention to the most basic part of the story.

    • @MEGAthemicro
      @MEGAthemicro  11 месяцев назад +7

      Look... you're not wrong. But the obvious counterpoint is that Paleo Pines dedicates maybe 1% of its bandwidth to the Para plotline, and it very, very rarely takes centerstage to the point that most players will forget it exists. That's why I left the "Plot" micrometric unscored. As for age, I used the term "kid" loosely to refer to a young adult.

    Coming back to this after playing around 10 hours of the full release:
    Yes the beginning of the game is grindy, but as you unlock new abilities it becomes less tedious... honestly it feels like you either just played the demo or the first hour of the game and gave up. Same can be said about its story. There are a handfull of mysteries to be solved around the island that take more than an hour or a fetch quest to solve.
    This is a decent game. Its accessable to a majority of people who would enjoy a cozy dinosaur collecting game that doesnt have super difficult mechanics. If you think a game like this, having a moderate to easy skill level, is "bad" maybe you shouldnt have made the review.
    Maybe play the game for more than an hour or two...

    • @MEGAthemicro
      @MEGAthemicro  11 месяцев назад +6

      I'm not sure how you came to the conclusion that I think this game is "bad" when the title of my review is "Good Not Great" lol. Regardless, I played the game for 10 hours, same as you. With rare exception, the quest design remains boring and tedious throughout. But it's worth it for the reasons you list... which were the same reasons I addressed in my review.
