Very interesting and unique narrative. It's refreshing to see someone who you can easily relate to: "Gamedev for the normal by the normal" not those kinds of videos where 1 year later the persons have created their own GTA.
You've helped me realise that I don't need to rush it. You see all those other devs who somehow started making first person shooters and 2d platformers after 3 months... it had me overwhelmed, i felt like i needed to reach that level of understanding at their same learning pace. But you took your time and made meaningful progress as a solid understanding of the basics is worth more than a clump of hard to read spaghetti code from merging 5 different tutorials into one script for their dream games they will have to restart because their "understanding" isnt as valuable as someone's who took their time. In reality, im not a super fast learner, something as complex as programming and game development is going to take me a while, best i can do is accept that and as long as i learn something new everyday, that's enough. I never planned to make it a career so why should i rush. Not like many of those new developers on youtube made those games without tutorials anyway, a lot of people get impatient and want to start making big dream games when they cant even make a small one completely by themselves. That's my goal, when i can make a small refined game by myself, that's when i consider bigger projects but for now, i cant even write a player script without help. if actually read this unnecessarily long comment even though this video is old, thank you for helping me come to accept that i need to take my time, it's inspirational and motivating to finally find someone who values having a good understanding of their code than that of building big games early on.
I appreciate the thoughtful response! I totally agree. Take the time to learn the basics and make tiny tiny projects. Then you can build from there. I honestly have to go back over the basics on the reg because I forget simple things or have a new understanding of the fundamentals. Thanks for commenting and good luck!
@@emeralgamedev I'm currently watching your "Basic Unity Concepts" video and it's been very helpful so far, I'm now very interested in learning the "why" for everything whereas before i just wanted to learn what things did, asking why things do what they do is proving to be a lot more interesting and a more valuable method of learning/gaining an understanding.
Have always dreamed of making games. A few months ago I delved deep into the millions of videos and tutorials on game development in hopes I'd get the inspiration to start, but I just got overwhelmed and didn't know any more than when I started, so I dropped it. This video got the gears turning again and got me re-inspired to give it another go. Keep up the good work, man 👊
That's excellent, just stick to it and you'll be amazed at the progress you can make! I just set up a discord with the goal of creating a space where we aspiring developers can encourage each other. Stop by sometime! discord.gg/Mg86kjrhUj
You're an amazing storyteller and your editing is on point. I am learning how to develop games too and you've inspired me to keep pluggin along. Thank you!
As someone who has thought about getting into making video games for years now but had no real idea where to start, this was a very nice video to see. Now I have at least some basic starting points to dip my toes in. Thank you!
What an amazing video have you made. This is the kind of content I can consume with great satisfaction. I also had the same laptop for a long time as you did in the video. I really loved the keyboard!
Unity Learning is an awesome resource for learning. It goes step by step and have some projects along the way as well as some test. Is in the unity official page. Good luck man!
Hey man, started my journey with an understanding of code (python) 2 days ago and I've gotta say using unity learning is definitely good. Done the junior programmer course and understand loads now bc the teacher is very good so maybe have a look there
I just begun working on creating video games on Construct 3, you video really inspires me to know that someone with no experience can learn to code and create good games
Installed Unity and finished my dream game in 3 weeks. Haha.. Bah.. Hahah.. ...thank gods you were joking 😭 Great content btw, hope you keep up with it!
This will probably get lost but I just have to say, this inspired me to get back on. Which udemy courses would you recommend for this exact type of thing?
Don't get me wrong, the youtuber who writes I started learning unity(or anything) with no experience. Btw who has a fricking experience without learning it before
@@emeralgamedev do it! you got this its complex from the outside looking in but like coding once you get the hang of it its pretty intuitive.. I also code.. mostly javascript..
Unity is NOT the place to start. Start with a more simple programming language, like scratch. Scratch is amazing for new devs since it only really teaches you the programming mindset, like “I should make a variable for the speed of my jump, add this much vertical speed when you jump and decrease it with gravity whilst adding this much height to the player as they jump and then subtracting this much height from the player when they slow down enough.” To the experienced scratch dev, its just, uh “gravity, jump, yes.”
This is by far the most detailed, relatable, and accurate representation of how it feels to learn Unity

Thanks! Yeah, I'm more into slow and steady progress and making very small games in the beginning.

Well-made video! I should probably document my learning process on RUclips too.
Thanks, Gixorn! It's a lot of work but I think it's worth it.

Good Job this was entertaining
Thank you and thanks for watching!
I just realized that the game that you made in multiple engines (dropper one) was one of the prototypes here
I rarely say this but you're actually an underrated RUclipsr.
Thanks, glad you found the content!

So, it's time to sum up another year? :)
thank you for adding the stock clips of women to help keep my attention during the video
I would CONFIDENTLY argue you’ve become an advanced level dev
Ur gonna become a great channel in no time!
ps remember meeeeee
I'll never forget you, Bye Bye.
Nice video men!
Thanks, friend!
If you could, what were the exact courses you took. (Amazing video btw)
Thanks! I started with the unity 2d course by gamedev.tv. It goes on sale for cheap on udemy regularly.
I bought that same tutorial back in 2018.
you forget how to walk, swim, talk, eat, but hey you can make a game
The confusion never ends.
Installed Unity and finished my dream game in 3 weeks. Haha.. Bah.. Hahah..
...thank gods you were joking 😭
Great content btw, hope you keep up with it!
Haha, thank you!
3:40 and to leave the game mode 💀 li keep forgeting to leave the game mode and when i want to test the game all my hard work is gone 😭
This video was hilarious though.
Nailed it.
Haha, thanks!
Just discovered your channel today, good stuff! Just curious is your end goal to work for a studio or be an independent developer?
Thanks! I'm not entirely sure what I'll do. I don't think I'll work for someone else's studio though cause I want the creative control!
Worst enemy, missing / misplaced bracket. Receiving code for an hour to then see it was not working because of some bracket or comma.
amazing
Thank you!
This will probably get lost but I just have to say, this inspired me to get back on. Which udemy courses would you recommend for this exact type of thing?
Hey! I used the ones that gamedev.tv puts out on udemy. They have a 2d and 3d course that are great!
@@emeralgamedev Thanks!! I just enrolled in the 3D course on Udemy!! I appreciate the reply, and hope to show off my future projects! Thanks again :D

same here , I'm 2 years with youtube experience
That's great! It's a tough grind, but it's so much fun!
nice video
Thank you, Mistereeeee!
At 5:55 did you make that too? Cause that would be a cool game right there haha.
Naw, that was just a tutorial I followed at the time!
why this man doesn't have thousands of subscribers??
Thanks, my man!
i knew proggramming so it was easy for me to start with unity
Yeah, that makes a lot of sense!
Don't get me wrong, the youtuber who writes I started learning unity(or anything) with no experience. Btw who has a fricking experience without learning it before
Not the video I expected. You mentioned no code experience, and it all lead to learn code lol
This is great, do u like cheese
Thanks! Sometimes.
so where are you in another year?
Perhaps it's time for an update?
@@emeralgamedev I think it indeed is, I really liked this video though
2:17 oh crap oh no BOOKS ARE NOT HELPFUL WITH GAME DEV PLEASE NO
Did you ever find yourself being confused by the example but understanding the code itself?
I think I always had more trouble with the code tbh!
