  • This video was made around the release of the 'old robocraft 2' and is now outdated, if you're looking for my take on the new Robocraft 2 Rebuild you can find that here: • There's A New Robocraf...
I take a trip down memory lane and look back on Robocraft 1 before taking a look at Robocraft 2 and all it has to offer. You can download the early access release on steam or robocraft2.com today! Official release is planned for roughly 1 year from now. The game is totally free to play with only cosmetic items being paid. Please like, share, and subscribe if you enjoyed this.
In response to the most common criticisms of the game in it's current state:
    - The game is in early access and they really mean that. If you aren't enjoying it now just put it on the shelf for now and try it again when it officially releases in 1-2 years.
    - A lot of the missing content from rc1 is not missing, it just isn't ready yet. Hovers and tank tracks are coming soon, for example.
    - A lot of the basic features like a friends list and party system are coming soon too.
    - It is NOT p2w. There is only cosmetic items in the battle matrix, nothing that affects gameplay.
-Everything you need for gameplay you can unlock in 1-2 days EASILY (go into build mode and press 'L' on your keyboard!).
From there, it is only your building (or CRF bot choice!) and your piloting skills.

Thanks, I just felt like the game wasn't getting a fair shot because of how many people felt burned by robocraft 1. I grew up with battlebots and junkyard wars and mythbusters and carmageddon and twisted metal etc so for me it's almost like I've been waiting for this game for most of my life. And if I can get some people to see the game the way I do and see the POTENTIAL for a great game here, then I'm happy.

Robocraft 1 had people grinding to get money for the tiered blocks which were VERY expensive at the final tiers, then got rid of them and did not compensate people.
then go rid of the tiers entirely.
The new aesthetics are not what I wanted.
Edit, I tried it for a bit, multiple crashes and it feels clunkier when it comes to building because robots have "more" blocks you need to place but overall it feels more like a bother than something good.

    • @Ace73Streaming
      @Ace73Streaming  10 месяцев назад +1

Yeah the removal of the tier system in rc1 was not handled very well, it's one of the most common complaints about rc1.
As for the crashes in rc2, they have continued to improve on this and this is why I tried to emphasize the fact that this is early access and they really do mean early access. This is not an open beta, this is an alpha.
The building can take a little getting used to, just like rc1, but it's really not that hard once you get the hang of it. The game just doesn't explain itself very well but they are working on things like a connection strength heatmap mode to help with this. The two building tips I keep telling people are
      1. kiss (keep it simple, stupid) and
      2. horizontal plate spam. Just stack 9x9 plates like pancakes whenever you can

My biggest surprise of this video was how Techblox was not mentioned once.
To those who don't know, Techblox IS Robocraft 2, only that it was before it was cut down, rebranded, and renamed.
This video and many statements in it will be received very differently if instead of comparing RC1 to RC2, it compared "RC2 from before it was rebranded to RC2" to RC2.
If this game released on Steam as Techblox on the day it was cancelled and subsequently cannibalised by Robocraft 2, it would still have more features and content than Robocraft 2 on it's Steam debut. It would also be much more well received, as it would have considerably more content, and would not be intended to attract people it's not made for.
For example, they promise in the EA disclaimer to give the tools to make maps and gamemodes in RC2 to the players in the future, while Techblox had both for years.
Another big thing that was removed was part tuning. Everything is limited to stock in RC2, and that introduced an issue with the wheels (too stiff, causes rollovers) that was later announced via official YT video to be fixed by faking the physics, rather than returning tuning.
The physics is another interesting thing too. Techblox was justified in using only serverside calculations, as it allowed for incredibly complicated machines to perfectly interact with other incredibly complicated machines.
Using this for a vehicular combat game makes playing it tedious, and is a very overkill use for such a system. It also effectively locks out anyone with moderate or higher ping from playing anything remotely competitive, as it inherently forces input lag due to how it works. It was fine when used in Techblox because it's use was justified.
This is why I can't fathom ever being enticed by the possibility of RC2 being great.
Considering how Techblox was in the process of becoming great, with relatively consistent updates, a defined direction of where it was going, and the whole thing being centered around making things that no other game can do (Two could, but one of them is not playable online anymore after a decade of service and the other is a fan made replacement in progress) rather than a vehicle combat game on a base that is not designed for it.
This took years, and it definitely is not possible for RC2 to rebuild itself to the quality Techblox had "in one year", per their statement of how long it'll be in Early Access. In fact, I think it took just as long to get it to a barely "playable" state after the rebrand.
What's worse is that RC2 has less than a third of content, and thus is missing a whole lot of possibilities. Part tuning was one of them, mentioned earlier. Engine parts is another, now the wheels work on their own.
I say Robocraft 2 does not have the potential to be "a genuine classic", because it tore down what *was* a genuine classic and took what was left over and rebranded that to attract as much from the Robocraft 1 playerbase as possible. This backfired because of how it was not a game for them, and it was not the quality expected.
"Soulless AAA" was mentioned near the end.
Techblox was turned into Robocraft 2 with very little warning, and immediately started monetising much more aggressively, all because of an alleged "overwhelming demand to make RC2" the moment one weapon part was added to Techblox. These events have been hidden quite well, and that fact combined with how little consideration was given to the players at the time it happened aligns closely to what's expected of AAA game management. The Discord community mentioned in the EA disclaimer is a whole another story, it was shut down and restarted several times.
There is one single thing I can respect about how it was handled.
Upon the cancellation of Techblox, as far as I know, any and all in game purchases were fully refunded.
However, this does not justify throwing away nearly all the content made for Techblox and hastily replacing it with only a small amount of Robocraft themed items.

      @@Ace73Streaming That's completely fair.

    • @probablygeneric429
      @probablygeneric429 9 месяцев назад

Basically what happened with Techblox was that when the Devs added a free-for-all fighting gamemode everyone playing loved that game mode a lot more than racing (which to be honest did get a bit old after a while for me). The Devs also decided that they would be able to make a much better game if they focused on one game mode rather than trying to make a game that does everything, so they decided to focus on combat an d rebrand to RC2.
Some features like the engine were removed, yes but that was because it was too easily exploited and didn't work too well in a combat environment.
And it's not like racing is dead either. Until the full release there were unofficial races at the end of each playtest and there will be races in the future once access to the world editor is added

    • @probablygeneric429
      @probablygeneric429 9 месяцев назад +1

Also the monetisation was done early so that the artists in Freejam had something to do while the rest of the game was being worked on. And the monetisation itself is even more fair than in Techblox because you both can't pay to progress and said progression is very fast, basically acting in place of a tutorial.

    • @TeamMuggi
      @TeamMuggi 9 месяцев назад

@@probablygeneric429 A number of these points were already mentioned in my earlier comment. Here's my reiterations and counterpoints for the new things.
-"Everyone" is quite a stretch. Proof would be hard to find since the Techblox Discord was ended and restarted elsewhere a number of times.
-During my time in Techblox, the Racing mode was always full (usually 5-10 players) at the popular time of the day. The combat mode usually had only 3. The most I can remember was 4 sometime close to when it was released. There was a showcase video on the Techblox YT that showed 5 players.
-The game was not meant to do "everything". It was meant to be a mechanical sandbox, which justified many of the included features. While much of those and a lot of content were removed to make RC2 more arcade style, it kept a few features that were not suited for arcade play. One of them only was because it was hardcoded into the game, that being the forced serverside calculations. Even that was justified by the developers as being needed for many of the then removed features, such as aerodynamics.
-The developers official statement was that there was an overwhelming response for RC2 after a single weapon was added. Considering how it would have been easier to add more weapons to Techblox, and how it already had a world and gamemode editor, it would have saved on both time and money. It would have been even easier to make a toggle for "wheels can move without an engine", rather than restructuring the entire game and throwing out all the content made over the years. Why part tuning was removed is still a mystery, as the untunable parts of RC2 behave poorly. Also there was that patch in RC2 to fake the physics because the untunable wheels were that bad.
Then there's the fact that a lot of people at the time of the announcement were wondering "who ever said that we wanted RC2 that badly?", AND that they DID add some more weapons to Techblox in the very short time after the RC2 announcement.
-Racing still being done in RC2 just shows that the removal of the official gamemode was pointless, and all that the content and feature removal did was make building race vehicles a lot shallower.
-I am not referring to the RC2 progression system, I mean the non-linear battlepass that is very much not mistakeable as a tutorial. According to the developers, all the unclaimed battlepass "Battle Matrix" items will be moved to the paid shop after each season ends. Techpoints was carried over from Techblox and the income method left unchanged. Spending was simplified to single tokens rather than as allocatable EXP to share between several progression bars.
-There is a button in RC2's Battle Matrix menu that explicitly says "Purchase Levels". How far you can reach in the battlepass is tied to levelling up, or alternatively claiming more items than the free pass allows.
Techblox RC2 has a time limited cosmetic battlepass. Both ways of spending money on it can go entirely to waste, as levels and premium pass don't carry over between seasons.
I had a look again to see if there was a "pay-to-advance-level" function in Techblox, but I have been unable to find any from screenshots and videos. This doesn't mean there wasn't, just that I couldn't find any, or get any statements from people to confirm it. From what I remember, there was a free tier and a parallel premium tier for each of the progression bars, and there were no functional parts exclusive to the premium progression, only alternates of free items.
-"While the rest of the game was being worked on" is not a good excuse. A blog post during Techblox' development stated that the biggest part of development was making the serverside calculation system (which was used as-is in RC2), and how development towards that took away from time for making content. After the rebrand, RC2 ended up with far less content, old bugs carried over from Techblox, and nothing truly new from the backend except vehicle pads and making wheel physics fake. I guess automated enemy turrets could count, but I don't know if they were done in game using logic blocks or required changing the code significantly.
-A "tutorial" shouldn't keep quality of life features locked behind levelling up. A progression system shouldn't do that either. The developers stated this is because "players got confused by these features". Said features are basic tools and QOL features expected to be in building games.

Thanks for the feedback! If you're curious I recommend you check it out but just keep in mind this is a true 'early access' game, not what most people consider 'early access' to mean now. So if you try it and you don't like it then just put it on the shelf and remind yourself to check it out again in a few months or when it has its official release (1-2 years from now).
And yes, mic upgrades are coming lol sorry. I did my best to clean up the audio but it's still pretty rough. My audio interface is likely the issue and I have a better one coming. If that doesn't fix it then I'll have to replace my MXL v87 (it's pretty old but I still think it's my audio interface, I'm using a xenyx right now and they're sort of notoriously bad)
Please share this with anyone you know who might be feeling nervous about trying RC2. It's not p2w and you can unlock all the parts in 1-2 days very easily. You even start with enough robits to buy a bot off of CRF. And ketmol has some pretty good build tutorials on youtube and there's people who will help you in the discord (and of course my stream, always happy to help new players get into the game!)

If they add the shield or disc module or something similar again I think they should make it so that you can add to the shield for example I think they should change how you can place the shield like de-coupling a part you built then once you decouple the part the shield module is connected to then it puts the shield up for a set time even if you cv cant change the time, I just wanna be able to add to the shield and be able to change the way you can place it on the map then when I de-attach a part from my vehicle which could also be a part with the shield that makes it so no one can drive through the shield by having some kind of blocker wall thing on the bottom of the shield the other team will have to destroy to get through. but anyway tell me what you think about this comment and what you think they should change and add to Robocraft 2

I don't know what FJ is thinking about modules but the last part about a small wall you can detach from your bot to trip people up? That's possible right now. You can use the decoupler part. Maybe even get fancy with it and have passive joints to make it fold out when you drop it so you can cover a larger area.

the game was at its peak in 2015.

untill the devs started talking about changing things in ways nobody asked for or wanted.
and despite the majority of the playerbase telling them it was a bad idea for months they did it anyways.
they got rid of nearly everything people loved about the game while introducing things most people hated without regards to feedback.

I also went and tested out robo 2 and so far I don’t like where it’s at so I’m going to wait. I’m also coming from starting robocraft when they had levels to the armor which I LOVED. But was removed shortly after I started playing. Idk my exact hours but I’ve put a lot of time into the game and I love it. I just want to see the same emotion for robo 2, and also being said for me the progression in robo 2 seems more monitized with way to many transactions. Plus the tech tree being mostly for cosmetic bs.

I do have to correct you on the rc2 tech tree, it's not monetized at all that's actually the 'battle matrix' you're looking at which is 100% cosmetic and optional.
VERY common mistake though, I thought the same at first too. But the actual 'tech tree' is very short currently (this is still an early access alpha) you just go into build mode and press 'L' and you'll see it. Freejam is aware that it's confusing the way it's set up now.
I can definitely relate since I came into RC1 right before the loot boxes and I remember that grind for legendary/t5 parts. Then they made everything free...

just seeing the gameplay, i must admit i'm a bit scared of all the possibilities that logic may offer. I loved robocraft 1 because, thanks to the limitations in the building system, it created a lot of diversity when creating robots to try and optimise any aspect of combat you wanted to focus on. Whereas the logic, selectable shields and stuff like that give me the feeling that we will reach a stalemate between a couple designs and that's it.
It is strange to say this, but the freedom that logic, per-block shields and stuff like that might force people into a meta that the restricted building blocks that robocraft 1 had din't do.

Meta will change when time flies or every balance patch, it's quite the Nature of RC2
bot 1 will beat bot 2
bot 2 will beat bot 3
bot 3 will beat bot 1
something like that, the meta will cycle cuz each machine was built to be multi-purpose or kill a specific machine with brutality
