I totally respect all your opinions but here is some information to put things into perspective:
Pop punk kids and alternative kids in general don't hate pop music. Elitists do but they don't really belong to us, we hate them too. On most pop punk road trip playlists you'll find countless Disney and 90s/early 2000s pop songs which most people are quite open about. That being said I don't think Set It Off were trying to sound Disney but I don't think they tried not to be Disney. Trophy Eyes, one of the more Hardcore bands in Pop Punk have a new song that really seems Lion King inspired so yeah, expect to find a bit of Disney in your pop punk.
This album was a bit of an identity crisis for Set It Off since everything they had done before was heavily influenced by certain alternative artists and here they were trying to find themselves which didn't quite happen and the band knows that too.
The thing is at least Cody (singer) and Maxx (drummer) have ADHD and you just have to let them do what they feel or they won't do anything at all. So Set It Off songs can be a bit hit and miss.
William Becket is the singer of The Academy Is ... and Jason Lancaster was in Mayday Parade at one point and is now a solo musician.
But yeah I personally don't listen to Duality when I listen to Set It Off. If you wanna give them a second chance Upside Down is a good poppier album (one of the only poppier albums I actually enjoy listening to) and Cinematics is more alternative, it's quite dramatic though but it fits way better than on Duality.
Your comments are always very drawn out and descriptive. As always, I appreciate your input and I’ll take what you said into consideration, in all honesty, I’m not looking forward to doing their other albums, but I always keep an open mind for any album suggested to me.
Duality is my favorite album from them, so while I may not agree with his or your opinion, I will respect it. I just like how Duality feels so unique compared to Horrible Kids, Midnight, and Cinematics

No, you’re pretty spot on. I’m not too happy at the moment. I haven’t been for a while and I’m still trying to figure out why. That’s one of the other reasons I wanted to stop doing the segment. It’s much more fun to do when I’m enjoying myself both on camera and in real life. That way I don’t come across as a character, you know?

Honestly their best albums were probably Cinematics and Horrible Kids (i do like duality and upside down) but Duality has to grow on you so idk I just wouldn't listen to it as a first time reaction bc idk the first album I heard was Cinematics and also, they are pretty theatrical like Third Wheel off of Horrible Kids and Swan Song from Cinematics are theatrical idk I guess that's their brand....maybe...

As a big fan of the band Set It Off, I really didn’t appreciate you saying that Cody sounded like Brittany Spears and that Ancient History sounded like a song you would hear after a Disney Channel movie. I found it really offensive, but I understand that everyone has their own opinions and can speak whatever is on their mind. And I do appreciate that you at least liked Forever Stuck In Our Youth.👍
Bad Guy's the only track I listen to from this album. Hopefully their other albums that got suggested are enjoyable. I've been told Cinematics is much better.

Okay so personally, I didn’t agree with most of the stuff you said, I can kinda see where you’re coming from with some of the songs and how they sound, but they’re your opinions so you do you.
Honestly, I was really hoping you were going to react to Cinematics first. This album is kinda all over the place for me, some songs I flat out skip and others I bop to. Cinematics kinda reminds me of AFYCSO by Panic! But replace the electronic elements with orchestral stuff. These two are WILDLY different.

tbh I feel like you'd like their album Upside Down WAY more than Duality, Cinematics, or Horrible Kids. Even though it's probably the least popular within the fanbase, almost all of the edgyness, theatrical stuff, and disney channel sounding stuff is gone and they instead focus on making more simple, fun pop songs with inspirations ranging from Fall Out Boy to Prince. It's basically this album but without everything you hated about this album (& a lot more of the few things you liked) if that makes sense hahaha. I feel like you wouldn't enjoy Cinematics or Horrible Kids much since those albums are even edgier and way more theatrical than this one.
They’re inspired by PRINCE?!? Wow. I didn’t hear that at all, but that’s very interesting. Prince is the reason I adore music like I do. I’ll be checking out their other albums in the future so hopefully I enjoy Upside Down 😊
Funny enough, when they performed N.N.E live, instead of singing that part of raising his hand high, he started singing Backstreet Boys

If i remember well, Cinematics is the most theathrical album they have, and Upside Down the most "pop" one. Duality is like a middle point.

This album was okay. I don’t come back to it often, but I find The Haunting, Wolf in Sheeps Clothing, and Bad Guy to be pretty great. I do think the lead singer to be a bit too much at times

the theatrics is what i like about set it off
i get it that they pretty much make music that's a hit or miss (even though there's not a hardly a song that i don't like)
but i love the theatrics which is what makes everything a hit for me but of course that's different for everyone
Didn't see this mentioned in the comments, but some things about this album and the band. (Oml this came out SO long, you don't have to read it)
Duality's idea for the music were songs that A. Have a happy sound but sad meaning (or vise versa) and B. Going from a happy sound/meaning to a negative one (or vise versa). Examples of this concept:
1. "Why Worry" starts off sounding negative with a bit of a negative meaning but changes to being extremely positive in it's sound and lyrics ("Bad Guy" does this too except it's flipped).
2. "Ancient History" sounds very VERY cutesy and happy but it's meaning has been described as "never have sex with your ex" (direct quote from their lead singer).
Duality has very theatrical sounds and is mixed with more fun and sorta poppy sounds and this is because of A. The band's background and B. Them trying something new to change their sound.
Before Duality, SIO had a very theatrical sound with the exception of their first 2 ep's. This is because Cody Carson (vocalist) and Daniel Clermont (lead guitarist) both have orchestral background where they met in band class and made the band later in the future. The theatrics started out a bit in their third EP "Horrible Kids" and continued on to their freshmen album "Cinematics." Their sounds was sorta what got them the recognition in the scene and although they did love it, they didn't want to keep the sound. "Duality" was kind of the "let's try out some of these newer sounds that aren't super theatrical and see how our fans respond," which is why the sounds vary so much. They wanted to change their sound but have a subtle transition. I will say if you want more of the fun sounds that they offer up, I definitely suggest checking out their senior album "Upside Down" because they change their sound almost entirely (there are still some brass instruments but they aren't necessarily theatrical sounds).
Also your laugh reminds me of the one at the beginning of the "Thriller" music video and it's great.

I love this album (I think it's my second favorite album of Set It Off), I don't agree with you on some things but I still loved the video and when you were listening to N.M.E and you started laughing uncontrollably it made me laugh a lot, Another moment that I loved was your entire reaction to Bad Guy. The Tune Up yeah I respect your opinion of the music entirely! And Set It Off’s stuff is very much hit or miss! It appeals to a certain type of audience! And I loved the album, but I’m also a diehard fan of the band, so I’m a bit biased LOL but in terms of a regular review, this album was very transitional and experimental for the band. For example, the opening track The Haunting, gives you the cinematic theatrical vibe from their preceding album, Cinnematics, yet the music in the chorus takes it into a different direction that makes the track very hit or miss. You still might enjoy Cinnematics if you like very theatrical albums that flow together! Set It Off have covered multiple different genres over the years, and different albums can stand out more than others!
He loves referencing things but not paying even attention to the lyrics like is a song about a girl that broke ur heart and u coming to terms with that and just saying fuck it move on and leave her even tho she lives with him.and stop say it's britney,n sinc or panic at the Disco or mcr.none of those are set it off.u like saying theatrical and shit like that is bad like the album tells a story listen to the lyrics and maybe connect the dots.ugh

All I can really say is, I’m sorry you didn’t enjoy the video. I really hate the word “critic” because that’s not something I’m trying to be. People kept asking to me to listen to this album so I did and unfortunately I didn’t like it. Production and music is always going to matter to me more than lyrics, which is something that me and the twenty one pilots fandom have gone back and forth on, so if that’s also something you don’t like, then I wouldn’t suggest coming back to my channel. Lastly, people have suggested other albums from this band, and I’m still optimistic about it, even though I didn’t enjoy this album. Maybe they’ll surprise me in the next one, but again, apologies you didn’t enjoy the video. 🤷🏾♂️

I mean I’m a big fan of musical theatre, so I dig some of the theatrics, but I get how it can be off-putting. I think it’s just their sound, if you don’t vibe with it then it just might not be for you, which is totally cool. This may be a cheesy and dramatic album, but hey I’m a cheesy and dramatic girl so they’ve found an audience😂 The funny thing is I agree with everything you’re saying, but I still find it enjoyable. To each their own, and I hope the comment section remains kind and civil.

The Tune Up I’m sorry that a fan base has ruined an album for you. I haven’t watched the video in a while but I remember it being positive. Says something about the clique if the backlash is worse on a positive video because “you got the meaning of the song wrong” or some bs, then an album you genuinely didn’t like. I guess as your videos get more traction that’s gonna happen, doesn’t mean it doesn’t suck though.

Jonathan Lopez yeah Upside Down has to grow on me, but I have a taste for pop punk theatrical music, so Duality was great for my taste! It’s definitely not for everyone though! I do think you’ll enjoy Upside Down a lot more. There are a few more funny and experimental songs (Hypnotized is an enjoyable but clearly experimental track) that kind of work for the band’s wacky style!
He should definitely listen to nothing more, or in this moment, paramore, three days grace, ragnbone man, set it off hypnotized
Rag N Bone Man is pretty dope! Paramore's great! Not too big on Three Day's Grace and I haven't heard of the others! I'll be checking out more Set It Off in November when I start doing suggestions again.
I don’t know why i am feeling that you’are faking the laughs.
At the risk of sounding extremely pretentious, I can assure you I wasn’t. Fabricating reactions for views is the one thing I’ll never do with anything I post. Admittedly though, I was fatigued at covering bands on the channel, and this was probably the 3rd video I had filmed that night, and I was pretty over it, and the bitter tone in most of my comments throughout the video is a clear indication, you know? I think I’ve grown a lot since this video though. Even watching it back is a bit cringe for me. I was harsh at times and definitely could’ve been more reserved for certain things. I’m always going to be honest with the videos, but now, I’m much more aware of honesty vs heckling, if that makes sense.

Yeeeaaaaa....my best friend showed me this band out of excitement and when I heard it I was just like...meh? They're kind of annoying tbh. And I agree it just sounds like basic pop rock.

In my opinion, it worked for the time Fever was made. Plus, Brendon's a much better vocalist. He can style his vocal dynamics and make it mesh with over the top production. It didn't work for me and this album, man. It felt so try hard edgy to me. 🤷🏾♂️

I hear you. I’d be annoyed if that was a constant opinion I heard frequently.
I feel like Brendon and Gerard Way just have better delivery over the music. They complimented the production with how they sang over it. It felt genuine. The emotion they conveyed didn’t feel forced or similar. Fever is vastly different from Black Parade but both are very theatrical in their own way. With this album, for me, it just felt like a really dark musical. Something I’d hear in Glee, or like I mentioned, Hamilton. It just felt very show biz and fabricated to me. But, this is solely my opinion! Doesn’t matter how I feel about it! If you like the album and the theatrics, that’s what’s important. 👍🏾👍🏾
