I only eat two meals a day because I suffer from digestive issues in the afternoon/evening. It’s good for my system to have a complete break from food until breakfast and I really don’t feel hungry. Amazing!
I do intermittent fasting, as well, Ali. I seem to be pretty much on the same schedule that you are on. Works for me. I loved seeing all your meals and probably could have eaten each and every one of them with pleasure. The French Toast looked SO yummy. I like mine savoury rather than sweet, too. I noticed that on the day you were 'so hungry' (you had a croissant with a friend), you ate a lot of carbs that day. I realize that we are all different, but I used to feel that way, as well. on days that carbs seemed to be at the top of my list. I changed to eating more protein with most meals and that definitely assuaged my hunger. Thanks for another wonderful video, Ali! I (most of us?) wouldn't mind seeing more of these. Many blessings from Ontario, Canada! 🥰
As a narcoleptic, I found that by fasting all day, I stay awake and can get my work done. I eat one main meal late afternoon, then supper in the evening, which helps my wake/sleep cycle. I stopped snacking and reduced my portion sizes to try to keep my menopausal belly in check!
Hello Ali. I have often wondered if swede and turnip are the same thing, but have now found out they are NOT the same, but are related. Appearance: Swede: A large, round vegetable with a purple-green skin and orange-yellow flesh. Turnip: A smaller vegetable with white or purple skin and white flesh. Taste: Swede: Sweet and earthy. Turnip: Peppery. Cooking: Swede: Can be used in place of turnips in many recipes, but they have different cooking times. Overcooking can cause swedes to disintegrate. Turnip: Mature faster than swedes and are best harvested in the summer. . I hope this helps any one else who has been confused, I am almost 64 and have finely found out the difference. Yay for this inter-web thing 😁. Much love and respect. x
Brilliant inspiration thank you 😊 - I am retiring at 59 as of March and am happy to see I already approach food prep and meal planning in a similar way as I will need to watch the pennies. The braised red cabbage and the home made pie looked amazing - I will add balsamic vinegar to my next shop! Will check out your bread recipe too. Have a lovely week.
Helpful to see how you pull things together and it seemed a good balance to me! Just off to Waitrose to get some of the bread flour that you use as my starter kit from Sourdough by the Sea has arrived and I want to get to it. Hope your week is being kind 💖
I've just discovered that M&S also do 1.5kg bags of organic bread flour for £2! Good luck with your sourdough. Just keep practising until you get a loaf you like :-)
My diet is about 80 -90% non UPFs so I allow myself a few indulgences. It's one of the few convenience foods I keep on standby. I really just fancied mash with the beef stew that day and didn't want to waste the rest :-)
Fab video, thanks Ali, you've given me some great ideas to try, I am looking forward to trying the red cabbage done like that, the kiwi compote and I've never thought to do a savoury french toast!
I do TRE, been doing it a few years, 9:30 to 5:30 I learned about it from the Zoe app that I followed. I’ve since started spending a month at a time with no snacks between my meals to give my tummy a rest, apparently that’s good for you. I can manage a month at a time 😊but I love my snacks, more than meals I fear.
I was a terrible snacker! Now I just eat snacks during the day (not many now) but it took a while to get into the habit. I love the ZOE RUclips channel, there's always great discussions and guests on there
I also practice time restricted eating. Window approximately 11-7 as I suffer with reflux and trying to avoid the meds. Good to see you don’t eat cereal every morning like many people. Also retiring in March when I turn 60.
I believe that here in Canada (probably the U.S. as well) we call this intermittent fasting. I usually follow this for about 2 weeks at a time. Then eat relatively normally for a week and then back to intermittent fasting. You had some lovely meals.
Yes also known as intermittent fasting here too thanks to the Fast 800 info. I think the word 'fasting' puts a lot of people off as they think they have to deprive themselves of food for long periods so I think TRE has become an easier way to describe it :-)
Great meals Ali, I'll be looking back on your videos to see how you made some of the meals originally. I think a beef casserole will be made this week for sure
Thank you Ali it all looks lovely,I do window time now and feel so much better for it my window which I chose myself is 12 till 6 pm two meals a day it works for me I think before I just ate 3 meals but did'nt enjoy the food as much as I do now,It might seem a long time between meal but your sleep most of the time x
Another interesting video. If you're interested in the science of TRE, you might find Dr Jason Fung's YT videos interesting. He's a very personable nephrologist. Porridge cooked with a spoon of ground cinnamon and a grated apple is delicious. Pop some greek yoghurt, a few toasted nuts & seeds, and some almond butter on top if you're feeling fancy. 😊
Thanks for the compot info, I will definitely try this as I eat porridge every day and I’m always on the lookout for ways to make it a bit different. I love red cabbage and make a batch but add apples as well as onions, It freezes really well. Keep up the good work Ali, cooking everything from scratch not only saves money but it is much healthier - NO horrible chemical additives.
Interesting to see what you can come up with from previous stocks. Im going to try to live on considerably less for the next 2 weeks as I've been a bit naughty in the treats department when there are bargains to be had in the reduced isle!! Only milk, meat/fish and veggies allowed for next 2 weeks. I am no buy until the end of Feb but did spend some Christmas money on some much needed gloves and entrance to an artists exhibition that I really wanted to see!
Love looking at these for inspiration. Sadly I can’t have fresh mash anymore it plays havoc with my sugars (Type 2) but frozen and instant not a problem. I have to eat little and often so spread my meals throughout the day. I’m not even finished work by 5 so tea is usually 7pm after kids activities. Not ideal but that’s life. We always freeze potions for lunches or teas when in a rush so at least we have a healthy tea moments away. Love your vlogs ❤
Also T2 diabetic here. Interested too read that instant and frozen potato does not cause problems will have to try that out. At the moment I'm on a very carb restricted diet because after 14 yrs my readings are all over the place. Guess age is the problem 😂
Totally agree with the time restricted eating. First meal around lunchtime ( 12 - 1pm) and second around 8 to 9pm. I like to leave at least 16 hours between last meal of the day and first of the next day. I do a broadly carnivore keto diet, never feel hungry and feel so much better not having the carbs especially sugar which I don't really miss now
Thanks for sharing how you plan your meals during the week - it just shows how you can produce delicious meals from elements you have prepared in advance when they were available. Like you, I find restricted hours eating very helpful, although my eating window is much longer than yours. I like the way it means that nothing is 'off limits' during the window, and that snacking just because I'm bored in the evenings is less of a problem, because I know I don't 'need' it, and my 'rule' means I can't have it. It saves a lot of money on treats. I wonder if I can reduce my eating window by sticking to two meals instead of my current 3.......I love lunch and dinner, but find traditional breakfasts boring.....so if I can avoid breakfast, have an early lunch/brunch of something I really like I might be healthier and wealthier.......Something to ponder.
I've never been a big breakfast eater so that wasn't hard for me to change. It was the evening snacking that was a big issue for me! Going to bed with food in my system made for uncomfortable sleep and sometimes pain.
I’ve only just swapped to BPA free for reheating food. Also I got a really good glass Pyrex dish in ‘Home Bargains’ which you can use to freeze, defrost and reheat all in one!
My basic compote recipe is just chopped up fruit, some citrus juice (it was orange in this one) and a little bit of sugar. You can add more as you taste as you go along. Gently simmer until you get the consistency you like (usually about 5 mins ish) I like compote because it's fresher than jam, has less sugar but it doesn't keep for long. So I freeze it in single batches :-)
All your meals look delicious. I especially like the look of the red cabbage and the broccoli pasta. I often batch cook & freeze mashed potatoes which I find useful.
I make all my compotes the same way. Chop up the fruit, add some citrus juice (1/2 a lemon or orange works) and a few teaspoons of sugar. Bring to the boil and simmer gently for up to 5 mins. Taste it to see if it's sweet enough before simmering. I like compotes cos you use less sugar than jam and the fruit doesn't disintegrate but obviously it doesn't keep as long. I freeze it in single use batches and add it to porridge etc. You'll see a kinda cherry compote in Friday's video! :-)
Ali, I challenge you to half your shopping budget for a month. I think you have the skills. I love nothing better than challenging myself with budgets if we have a goal. Currently I try to spend £100 per week for my family of 4. I'm siphoning off £40 per week at the moment because I'm setting up my upholstery business and there's a lot of stuff I need. Having my stored veggies from the allotment is helping hugely though and our favourite lidl £1.50 box. Fancy a challenge?
So just checked my January figures and it looks like I've halved my shopping budget for this month without trying!! But yes, challenge accepted for February! I'm going to re do my budget so will let you know my target figure 🙂
Excellent video, Ali, and really shows how you can cook, freeze and reuse every last bit of food you buy. I find it sad to see so many people relying on chilled ready meals from the supermarket as they can’t be bothered cooking for one. Why not cook a four-person meal from fresh, eat one portion and freeze the rest, giving you three ready meals straight from your own freezer? I try to do TRE (from 8am to 6pm) but the evening munchies always defeats me! 😂
That's what I do. There are two of us at home, so I often cook a 4 person meal, and freeze the spare portions for next week. It saves so much time in planning, prepping and in cooking.
How do you cope with the chia seeds in your porridge and having IBS? Do they aggravate your IBS? Loving your posts but I'm definitely seeing less adverts, let's hope your income doesn't reduce too much x ❤
I've been using chia seeds for years to help with the IBS (they were Dr recommended) My main issue is wheat and the additives used in UPFs. Organic wheat and sourdough seems to be ok as long as I don't eat too much in one day :-)
Lovely meals Ali. Saw your name and oat cake recipe mentioned on Martin Lewis’ weekly email.
👍
Oooo, fame!! Lol!

I hadn't realised that but yes, too many carbs makes me eat more!! Good spot! :-)
Yep, I have discovered more carbs = more hungry; more protein = less hungry too!!

You could try adding apple wedges to your red cabbage if you want to avoid adding brown sugar or reduce the amount of sugar you add in.

Idaho instant mash is the best. I often do a big batch of carrot and swede màsh in the slow cooker.
Ali, I'm concerned that you heat food in the microwave in plastic containers. Please do some research concerning the issues with it.

The red cabbage looks yummy. Kind of naughty with butter and sugar but what a lovely treat! The balsamic would be a great add to it.
