For YEARS She Recorded Everything on TV

- Meet Marion Stokes. In 1979, Marion began recording TV 24/7, capturing sitcoms, news and everything in between. She was determined to preserve television history that networks were constantly erasing to save money and free up storage space. As a former librarian and activist, Marion was passionate about access to information. She sometimes had as many as eight tapes spinning away at once. Even getting her family in on the act. “We’d be out at dinner and we’d have to rush home to swap tapes” recalled her son Michael. By the time she passed away in 2012, Marion had amassed about 71,000 tapes - the only comprehensive collection preserving this period in television media history. Now, the Internet Archive is digitizing her incredible work to make it publicly available. Marion's vision of universal access to knowledge will finally be realized, thanks to her tireless effort of secretly recording everything for thirty years. #foundmedia #internetarchive #internethistory
"Secretly?" - To clarify: Her family and friends knew about the recordings, but she kept them private due to past government surveillance of her political activism. This caution likely stemmed from her and her first husband's attempted defect to Cuba. As a new RUclipsr, I aim for accuracy and will be more careful with potentially ambiguous statements in the future. Thank you for helping me improve my content.

There is much more to Marion and her story! Check out the great documentary about her life titled *_Recorder: The Marion Stokes Project._* dir. Matt Wolf, where most of this footage is from. Nice try. God used many ways to get his humans to depend upon Him and to include Him in their lives. He knew beforehand that the law wouldn’t work. He is all-knowing, ever-present and all-powerful. It was always in His plan to become flesh (and as flesh He was subject to all the complications, rules and indignities of it) so that He could be born, live, teach and then die and rise again to bring those who want to be in communion with Him, life everlasting.
It’s quite simple.
John 3:16
If we choose to accept His free gift of salvation, we get to be with Him forever. No person on earth knows what total separation from our Creator is like. People talk about it like it’s going to be a permanent party where all the most fun people will be. Make no mistake. If you choose to ignore Him, you will find yourself in the most desolate place imaginable with nobody to comfort you.
Read your Bible prayerfully . Ask the only Living God into your life. Pray for wisdom and strength.

I tell you the truth, you must be born again. Unless you repent and turn from your wicked and evil beliefs and receive the Lord Jesus Christ as your savior, you will perish. @@PolloDeLaPiscinaWhen they take down all internet info and books you'll wish there was preserved media.
@@PolloDeLaPiscina For keeping a diligent record of what they were sending into people’s homes. Most of what she saved is one of a kind and would not exist had she not had the forethought to do this. And she didn’t just leave the record button running while she watched her shows, she made a point of saving as much as she could.
If you asked those stations what new product or method they were brainwashing the masses with on any particular week, they would give you a generic vague answer about the popular shows, but this is a true look at exactly what was swaying the opinions and politics of the time.
It is irreplaceable.
A lot of the past television history would be lost if not for her.
no its not, its the cringiest thing a person could do lol
Thank you Marion Stokes and your family.
Ever Peace 🕊️
I've always wanted someone to look up to and now I found her- a true hero!
Her dedication is so immense. Her name should be written in history books.
Hate to say it, more than likely she won't be. At least not as it should. Just like many before her😒
She won’t..they don’t like people like her!
Her culture will forever be written in the history books. A what not to do history lesson.....
I bet she erased or didn't record anything that goes against her "culture". In fact after a quick Google search its clear to see I was right.
@@bestofgrime7723you don't know this specific woman's culture. What an absolutely irrelevant comment
This woman is simply amazing. Everyone deserves free access to information in this day and age.

Impressive. My heart goes out to to for her efforts. Also, to her family for supporting her vision and now fulfilling her wishes.
As a daughter of a Librarian, myself understanding the importance of documenting, recording and archiving everything going on in society, I say
Bravo, bravo, BRAVO, Marion!! 👏👏
As someone who’s interested in an old tv show with no releases, I rely completely on recordings made by others to catalogue. People who did/do this are amazing, and it’s still needed today. Not everything on the internet is permanent
What show?
What show?
I'm glad she did this. She's clearly a devoted archivist - without bent or skew.
This is beautiful. What a wonderful legacy. May she rest in peace ❤
Wow, that's incredible! Preserving the Information of news, tv shows and commercials for future generations to enjoy and cherish. I wonder if anyone is still doing that today. To many governments and companies today are busy erasing the past.
I AM TRULY GREATEFUL TO THE FAMILY FOR ALLOWING THIS....CAN'T WAIT TO START BINGING THE FOOTAGE
May have historical value, but most of those years were pure crap as far as entertainment value, lol
@@jray5894 you must have been born in the late 90's or later???
@@jray5894 MAYBE....BUT ENTERTAINMENT IS IN THE EYE OF THE WATCHER🤷🏾♀️😂
99.99 % is trash
I hope they also saved old commercials cause those are so entertaining to watch
Thats badass. She definitely is exposing stuff we were lied about stuff they "never" said on t.v. all the same words repeated over and over.
Now we know how valuable it is, history is being rewritten daily. Britannica had definitions that were straightforward, now those same definitions have been removed or made to define something unrelated.
Marion and Alexandra, 2 amazing women that freed us and made public information possible
I love that she did this in Philadelphia so all my local things I grew up with are preserved.
Omg wow I did t know this!! Same from the Philly area !!
My favorite American city. I don't know if I've just had good luck but it's the friendliest big city I've ever been to
That is crazy how your city probably has a lot more newscasts preserved than a lot of others just because of her.
@@richarddavis8863shhhh, don’t let the secret out!!! We gotta let people continue to think Kensington represents Philly as a whole. It’s such a misrepresented city that’s not understood by anyone who hasn’t lived in it. Fine by me because it helps keep rent low!
@@ImpetuousPorkus I can't give the secret away, I tried lol. I was telling a guy the other day how much I loved it and how friendly it was and he said "You're being facetious right?" I dunno, I'm from West Virginia and people are super friendly here and Philadelphia is the only city I've been to where people will give you a nod and "sup" when you pass em on the street, chat with you in line at the store. In Atlanta and LA people act like you're schizophrenic for making small talk lol
This is the whole point of the Internet Archive. Thank you and your family's work.
Thanks to the arduous efforts of 1 woman, Ms Marion Stokes, the modern world has a meticulously catalogued chronologically archived collection of 30 years of our history, to pass on to our future peoplez.
This is what being a valuable member of society looks like!
With the new digital multimedia, archival material is much more important than before.
That former librarian (R.I.P.) captured which otherwise would be lost, possibly forever lost in antiquity.
It's a lot to sort through, but she did a great conscientious thing. God, rest that good woman's soul.
Thank you, Marion. History owes a great debt to you for your determination and foresight of capturing important historical moments for future generations.
Great now I can watch that episode of Days of Our Lives I missed in 1983. Thanks, Marion.
Miranda did it.
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂🎉!!
Copywrite. Sorry you aren't able to lol
Or the news
The Guiding Light!!!
Amazing! Visionary.
I talk about Raygun's War against American labor in general & American organized/unionized labor in specific that is still going on because lived through it. But I & my memories won't always be here. Marion's videos will still be here. Thank you, Marion Stokes.
If the content she so preserved for people to have access to is somehow charged, taxed and sold(not free), then it beats her efforts.
It should be accessible for the world to see.
What a visionary lady. Not the hateful kind of person many of us are now...
We love you, Marion! Your name will ring through the ages. You will never die. We love you too, Internet archive people.
Me, too! I discovered Internet Archive when looking for an old newspaper article. I read some books there (although some were removed like Agatha Christie's etc) and watch old TV series (Mod Squad was also removed though). I donate to them.
Ms Stokes Saved it All When Everyone else Would Delete them 🤍
Wow! What a lot of our history! Useful in so many ways!
I do work with a man who’s 80 yrs old. He’s probably got nearly half the amount of her collection on video. Thank you to your hoarding nature, record keepers.
She was a visionary woman. Intelligent. Elegant. I’m happy that her legacy lives on ❤.
I LOVE ARCHIVISTS!!! Not only is it *cool* to revisit and rediscover old media, it's also very important for history and making sure that it can't be rewritten by those who want to abuse their power.
G*h damn Shego was so fine
Maybe u should try visit the Vatican Archives. If u love Archivists
Unfortunately it can be rewritten eventually overtime with AI. Which is likely to happen because the government and media controls the narrative.
A paper archivist had an original birth announcement photo of my grandad from 1914...it is the only one that survived...I now have it...he lived 1500 miles away from where grandad was born

There is amazing information in the Vatican archives as well.
This woman should have her own holiday. WOW! 🤩
Also, I freaking love your cut. This clip loops perfectly. Def had to subscribe after seeing this short.
What an incredible lady with an incredible foresight. 🌟
How COOL! Marion Stokes is a name to remember! Great foresight and wisdom and realizing the technology was available to do that! Hero!
This is a bigger help than I can comprehend, that is not just the history of Television but also; forgotten new stories, advertisement, POV of the world at the time, out look on Life & just Life in general! Tis amazing snapshot of history we’d have!
There is a great PBS doc on her!! Very impressive person. 😊
Thank you, Mariam. You did a justice for the people so they can see real history as it unfolded and a true understand what was actually happening in our past. that may make you one of the greatest Americans of our time.
Amazing commitment! God bless her and her family for making this possible!
Amazing. She’s one of those quiet heroes that deserves respect and recognition.
