    Project Inspired By:
My good friend Ritchie Kinmont from www.sonicdad.com, and a design collaboration we did together for the Randomizer Rocket project (bit.ly/IBRandom...)
    Project History & More Info:
If you make these parachutes, you'll be able to use them with Rockets, Sky Balls, or even action figure toys as well.
I was amazed to see that 8 parachutes could be made from 1 dollar-store table cover, effectively making them less than $0.15 each.
My good friend Ritchie Kinmont has a business, as well as a RUclips channel, called Sonic Dad ( / sonicdaddotcom ) and has some really great projects.
We collaborated in the past, on the Micro X-bow video (bit.ly/MicroXBow), and when it came time for me to design a rocket for my sugar motors, I went back to Ritchie so we could put our heads together and see what we could come up with.
We made a really awesome rocket, he called the "Randomizer", and Ritchie used one of the parachutes he made in a previous project (bit.ly/IBSonicP..., as the parachute for the rocket, and it was perfect!
I made a few small modifications to the parachute design, and developed it into a project video for the rocket building series, with approval from Ritchie.
These parachutes can serve multiple purposes, from rockets, to sky balls, to action figures, and more.
I found some techniques to manufacture the parachutes so they can be produced quite quickly, and they typically take me about 5 minutes each, once I get in the groove.
For these parachutes I used scotch-tape, like Ritchie did in his project, however after playing with them extensively, this seems to be the most common point of failure. In the future I'll probably try using colored electrical tape, a bit of duck-tape, or another flexible rubber tape with more adhesion for better durability.
Either way, they are super easy to fix if they come apart. All you have to do is tape them back together! :)
    Have fun!

Hello world. As promised, here is the tutorial on how to make the table-cover parachutes I got for free from the Sonic Dad website. You can have it as well (www.sonicdad.com/partners/thekingofrandom2/). I just have a couple more videos I'm finishing up for the rocket building series, like a new version of sugar motors, how to make fire resistant wadding to protect the parachutes, as well as the tutorial on how to build the rockets. So expect to see those coming soon. :D

I made these with a large group of school kids yesterday and they loved them, they played with them most of the day and i was on the school roof most of the day
I did have to change the way they make them for the kids but worked out the same, thanks for the idea.

    Hi Grant,
Videos are Great. I am making a rocket similar to the randomizer with my 8th grade son. The randomizer turned out to be undoable with materials available in Germany. With imagination we are making something close. We are trying to make the parachutes now. Again we cannot get the table cloths you use, which has caused us some trouble. In order to help those outside of the US, it would be cool if you could always give the exact measurements of the materials you are using. This then makes it possible to find substitutes much more easy and make less mistakes. For example, we are using a poncho instead of the table cloths for our chutes. In the video we did not catch that you were making the cuts on 2 layers of the table cloths until using the technique on our single layer poncho to find that we did not get a cross, but only a half of one 😂 . Anyway, thanks for making the videos. We are having a lot of fun.

My parachute worked way to well. The wind took it like 1/2 mile away from the launch site and me and my friends looked for it for like 20 muintes. But it was worth it because the parachute worked.

Is Scotch tape really strong enough for these parachutes? That's rather surprising.

    • @TheKingofRandom
      @TheKingofRandom  9 лет назад +42

+Joe Vasicek Yes it works for about 50-100 launches before the tape starts having trouble. It is the most common point of failure though, so perhaps electrical tape or a tape with stronger adhesive would increase their longevity. Duck Tape would do it for sure. It's an open source idea, so it's open to suggestions :)
