Your eyebrows when she sings " ... gonna teach him a lesson alright " the first time> Priceless ! Yes i've seen her in a few Swedish interviews when she was in her fifties : she had quite a naughty vibe when the ( male ) interviewer asked some personal questions ( he blushed ) She can be a bit of a tease when she wants to , despite her goody two shoes looks.
I love this song, it's so uplifting. The harmonies just take your breath away. Arrival is a wonderful album, My Love, My Life, Tiger and the haunting title track are outstanding x
The fact that they were in their mid 30s makes it even funnier, because they are acting as teenagers. Frida's son probably was a teenager while his mom is playing one
Dereck my man, I love your channel. So good seeing your reactions to tracks from my youth and I am now 65 years young. Proves that if something is good it goes on and on and on! Well done buddy -respect.
Wow the memories!! 'When I Kissed the Teacher' was my all time favourite song during my teenage years. I actually did have a crush on a teacher and played this over and over!
Great song. I particularly like the interplay between the different tempos of the acoustic guitars and the main beat. Very clever effect. As for the video, as a Swede, I can assure you that we don't wear a school uniform in our schools, nor have we ever worn clothes like these. If anything, they seem inspired by baseball to me, so my guess would be that ABBA wanted to appeal to an American audience. The teacher is played by the late Magnus Härenstam, who was and remains one of our most beloved actors. A national treasure, if you will.
Benny and Bjorn told that this song was terrible to record, because the amount of vocal arrangements, guitars, but they wanted to achieve that effect, if you listen very carefully, there are A LOT of voices and strings, and it's just a pop song in just 3 minutes!!! Incredible... Love so much this song....Please, you got to finish The Visitors ans Super Trouper albums!!! And start "The Album".... Can't wait your reactions to Move On, Hole in Your Soul, I'm a Marionette, One Man One Woman... Fantastic album...
Remember it was multi tracked using tape. So you cut it together. Not like today where computers make it very simple to do. Singing 4 or 5 different back grounds. Cutting it together with the main vocals. Then add in everything else. I very simple pop song that wasn't really very simple at all.
Happy you’re now reacting to some of the Arrival songs. Tbh that album has very underrated songs, more than just “Dancing Queen.” My favorite album too
The first track on the' Arrival' album. Just imagine, this track fades out and then....DANCING QUEEN.....followed by the 3rd track 'My love My life', a song many want you to react to. All in all, a classic collection even though it is not their longest album time-wise.
@@banditligroin I think it must be in some vault. They edited some parts for the movie, but I am pretty sure there is more material that didn't make the final cut. Like the song Mamma Mia. In the movie, only the end appears, not the entire song
One of my favourite reactions. Such a euphoric song. It's impossible to feel sad when listening to it. Those harmonies and Agnetha's vibrato on "gonna teach him a lesson alriiiiiiight!" is sublime. And thank you so much for saying 'Agnetha' now and then, that made my day.
Benny’s one of his favourite, because this song very complicated on musical level. There is a complex choral in the background, how he using the classical musical elements like objects of expression, hiding the difeferent musical layers behind the simplistic melody (same way as with Mamma Mia) - this is genious….
I am SO glad you listened to this. I love your enthusiasm Derek. It’s one of my fave Abba songs. So fun and uplifting. One of my girl friends at school used to drag me around at break times and swap coats so she could stalk our drama teacher at school. :D Doesn’t this cheer you up! :) Check out Tiger if you haven’t already.
You really have so much ABBA to do but really glad you reacted to this. Enjoy. I still am waiting for Andante, Andante. You need to see more videos. Agnetha bites her lips quite often. Really! It is one of her "things".
In the UK, 'Arrival' is ABBA's Best Selling Studio Album, with over 1.7 Million Sales. It was the UK's Best Selling Album of 1977. It is also their Best Selling Studio Album Worldwide, with over 10 Million Sales...
Hi Derek love your reactions. When I kissed the teacher was my daughters favourite ABBA song. Listening to it again with you brought back sooooo many good memories THANK YOU P.S keep up the good work, Alex Scotland 😎
I can’t ever remember ever seeing this video before. Pure brilliance. Another fun song, I think is brilliant is Nina, Pretty Ballerina. One you very rarely hear.
Trivia: the teacher is Magnus Härenstam, one Swedens great comedy actors, he worked a lot in pair with Brasse Brännström. They did shows and TV and a lot was co-written and directed by... Lasse Hallstrom, yep, same guy who filmed most of abbas videos. Fun fact, Magnus and brasse did a kids television show in the 70's on alphabet and numbers together with the late Eva Remeaus, to this day one of the most watched and loved kids TV-shows in Sweden. Re-runned several times, is on DVD and constantly showcased on SVT-play. (Swedish televisions play site)
yep the opener of Arrival, actually it was never a commercial single anywhere. So the chartplacing might have been in connection with Mamma Mia Here We Go Again the movie... But like That's Me, which was single A-Side in Japan at the the time, a commercial video was shot... so it might have been considered to be a single.... It was Europe and the 70's, so it was not risky or anything at all at the time. Overall they were considered to be very clean and innocent and compared to other 70's lyrics it definitely was. I think the arrangement - instruments and vocals is on of the best they did. Again a wall of sound was created, and actually the piano - prominent on SOS, Mamma Mia, Money Money Money, The Winner Takes It All, Thank You For The Music i consider the most typical instrument for ABBA's music. Benny on piano or keyboards. Accoustic guitars like here are not typical and actually make this song so distincitive. I never analysed their music too much, but after learning that Benny was always a huge Beach Boys fan and "On And On And On" is some reference, i think there is something in the arrangement here that reminds me of some Beach Boys technics as well. The bridge/verse part sung soley by Agnetha could be stolen out of a sixsties Conny Francis song and put into an 70's pop song.. it has some vibes of oldfashion pop in it whereas the chorus is typical 70's guitar driven contemporary pop. Even Agnetha's vocals do have a Conny Francis appeal to it in the verse... It's so multi-dimensional and cleverly made, but all you get - if want to - is a very catchy enjoyable timeless pop pearl.. which it is for sure. I think it was at their respective time alongside Thank You For The Music one of their best known album tracks...
Thank You Dereck for this amazing track. The whole Arrival album is Amazing which is why it is their best selling studio album in the UK. Please review every track. You won't regret it.
The costumes worn by ABBA remind me of football/rugby PE style kit. Best wishes and take care. Kind regards, Peter Skuce. St Albans. Hertfordshire. England.
If you haven't seen this scene in Mama Mia 2, you need to; very high energy, & guaranteed to make you a fan of Lilly James, who sings the lead (assuming you're not already).
Ya, I loved this track when I bought my very first ABBA cassette tape of Arrival in 1977 during my first semester at college. Such a catchy fun song with great drums and base. Awesome. I just loved the section with the 'geometry' reference. An early masterpiece hands down.
The outfits in this video and in particular the ones worn by the group in the Tiger video were I think inspired by the USA bicentennial celebrations in 1976.
Just as 'When I Kissed The Teacher' opened the 'Arrival' album back in 1976, the 'Mamma Mia - Here We Go Again' version opened that movie in 2018. There is so much more to 'Arrival' to investigate. 'That's Me' has a promo, 'Why Did It Have To Be Me' (also used in the second Mamma Mia movie) has the wonderful film sequence from Australia in 1977, 'My Love My Life' has a perfromance from Poland featuring the whole band and one from Sweden featuring Agnetha, and 'Tiger' also has film from Australia (though edited) and Poland. 'Dum Dum Diddle' the folky bit of fluff from the album also has a performance.
Hi Dereck. I don't know if you are going to record your reactions to all of ABBA's songs, but if you are going to do that, I think the last song you should react to is "The Way Old Friends Do". This is one of my favorite songs and I can't wait to hear it, but at the same time I think the most suitable place for this song is at the very bottom of ABBA's song list. I just want to say that this is the song that the band members sang in 2016. They sang together for the first time in 34 years!!! For me, it's just an incredibly sentimental song. When I think to myself that they sang this song after 34 years of break, I get chills all over my body and tears in my eyes. And precisely because of this one fact, and because of the amazing lyrics of this song, I think this should be the last ABBA song you will react to. You may not know what I mean because you probably don't love this band as much as I do, but I hope you understand me.
Try ABBA - Hole In Your Soul, epic rock'n'roll (glam rock) featurig Agnetha's metal vocal specially written for Wembley and Canada / US tour. She's still listening to death metal
...and Abba gets another remarkable point in their career: For the 1st time in history a video is rewinded within a reaction video. Greetings from Brazil, and please, try The Tiger, official video: extremely sexy lyrics for a 1976 tune
Dereck, if you want to see racy schoolgirl songs, check out the fabulous Chrissy Amphlett, lead singer of 80s Australian band, The Divinyls! You might know their last big hit: I Touch Myself. Other fantastic songs include: Science Fiction, Gonna Get You, Back to the Wall, Hey Little Boy, Only Lonely. The late Chrissy Amphlett was an Aussie rock legend, who died of breast cancer in 2013, aged 53, had such an amazing voice. She rocked a schoolgirl uniform long before Britney. She even played Judy Garland on stage in the musical, The Boy from Oz.
A song typically about a school girl crush which happened/happens quiet a lot. Bjorn wrote the words & Benny wrote the music, in the early days Stig Andersen (their manager) also helped with the writing.
I love your reactions. I was in high school when this came out, and back then some of us had crushes on our male teachers, so this song fit us, and it was all in innocence. We were not too aware of sexual harassment back then Lol
Not a school uniform; as an American you should recognize that they’re football t-shirts. Tisk ;) The song is one of my faves off Arrival, which is an amazing album btw. Easily one of my fave albums.
This was the very first pop song I remember hearing as a kid. My mom had the "Arrival" album and I asked her to play it simply because "four people and a helicopter" could only be cool (This was my six-year-old self's reasoning.) In hindsight, I am so happy that it was this song that opened that album. It was my introduction to ABBA and to good pop music. It set the standard. I was a sucker for intricate backing vocals from that moment on. Great to see this reaction and you mention so many things I love about this track too. By the way, the Agnetha bite-lip is a trademark. She does it on several occasions if you watch out for it. She does it in "The day before you came" as well when she's flirting in the train. I second mito747's suggestion: "That's Me" is another shimmering track from "Arrival" and one of Agnetha's favourites. She named one of her greatest hits albums after it. If you love vocal harmonies and keyboards that song is a must.
Since you are looking at less-known ABBA songs, you ought to check or Should I Laugh or Cry (fantastic bass) and Cassandra, which is an incredible exploration of a Greek myth. ABBA's range of subjects was astonishing. More lovely bass and fun on Baby You Owe Me One. Get some psychological edginess with Elaine.
If I remember correctly this is actually the opening song in Mamma Mia-Here We Go Again! BTW, if you still haven't seen them I would suggest seeing the first movie first so the second one will make more sense.
I suggest you check out 'ABBA The Last Video ' 3 versions of ABBA, cameos of all 4 from recent years , a clip from the '70s, and another version you must see!! Most of the dialog is lyrics from their songs. Also a surprise cameo from a superstar fan!!
After u have done the ABBA catalogue can you react to Mamma Mia 1 & 2. The way the musicals use the music to tell the story is just pure joy & a few tears.
THOSE TSHIRTS WERE SO COOL THE AT THE TIME . I HAD MISMI DOLPHINS AND A STEELERS ONE. THIS WAS NOT A VIDEO AS SUCH , IT WAS PARTNOF AN ABBA SPECIAL AND YES IT EAS ADDED YEARS LATER AS “ONE MORE “ OF THR VIDEOS THEY MADE, THE CHARTING YOU MENTIONED WAS WITHOUT RELEASING IT AS A SINGLE
Benny and Bjorn wrote such creative music. That's what I've always loved about them. You can hear the beginnings of the post-ABBA direction they took in terms of musical-type music. They launched right into CHESS and it would be fun to do a reaction video to some of the songs from CHESS. Look at Someone Else's Story on RUclips as an example.
How about a few of ABBA's more "edgier" songs. "Hey, hey, Helen" and "Watch Out". These are quite the contrast to their normal sound. It also shows how versatile, musically, ABBA really is.
Endlich Mal wieder was von ABBA und Dereck, habe schon lange darauf gewartet!!! So Good!!!
I suggest you to react on their song "That's Me" from the "Arrival" album in 1976, it was the B side of "Dancing Queen" and has got the real ABBA sound... my favourite track from the album

In hindsight, I am so happy that it was this song that opened that album.
The infamous Agnetha lip bite, she was well known for doing this @Dereck Reacts 💜
Yes , if lm not mistakes it called " abbadabbadoo" ( also Tiger and Money were in it)
Benny and Bjorn wrote such creative music. That's what I've always loved about them. You can hear the beginnings of the post-ABBA direction they took in terms of musical-type music. They launched right into CHESS and it would be fun to do a reaction video to some of the songs from CHESS. Look at Someone Else's Story on RUclips as an example.
One Night In Bangkok
How about a few of ABBA's more "edgier" songs. "Hey, hey, Helen" and "Watch Out". These are quite the contrast to their normal sound. It also shows how versatile, musically, ABBA really is.
The layered vocals are really interested in this one.
