    I used to frame houses and apartments in the mid to late 1980s with hammer and nails. The carpentry technology has come a long way since I was in my 20s. Thank you for sharing!

    Shop merch here: www.mattbangswood.com/
    In 2019 someone bought the URL www.MattBangsWood.com/ out from under me. In 2022 it lapsed.. Someone else snagged it. Tried to sell it to me for thousands of dollars.
    A few months ago I gave it a shot and was going to buy it from the seller, only to see they let it lapse. I've got it locked down now, it's never going anywhere.

    What is the purpose of the pins on the floor? Is that there for them to easily place the walls, or does this add some support? Is this standard practice?

    I always wondered how they got a big heavy framed wall up and over the tall concrete J- bolts.
    It looks like you have spacers (16:00) on the side of the bottom plate to get it up high enough to have the plate rotate over the bolts.
    I also wondered how they know exactly where to pre-drill the bottom plate so the holes match up perfectly, it seems there is not much room for error.

    • @MattBangsWood
      @MattBangsWood  8 месяцев назад +2

      People trip out on why I don't shear on the ground. It's tough enough getting the walls up and over the embeds and penatrations.

    • @Rambleon444
      @Rambleon444 8 месяцев назад

      No kidding you would need a crane or pay for a bigger crew.@@MattBangsWood

    • @Bill_N_ATX
      @Bill_N_ATX 8 месяцев назад +2

      Sheering on the ground is easy if you have a Lull or crane to lift your walls into place, but for small and tight jobs where it’s just a few carpenters on site, you sheet after they’re vertical.
      As for how to know where the holes need to be drilled, I know of two ways. The first is to lay your bottom plate next to the location, mark where the bolts are laterally, then measure up to mark the location in the other direction. The second is to figure out where the plate is supposed to be, lay it across the bolts and hit the board with a hammer hard enough to make a dimple. I’ve seen both used, depends on the framer I guess.

    At 11:00, what is happening here with the doubled-up 2x6 horizontal bracing in a row (as opposed to the staggered single 2x6 bracing lower in the wall)? Is it because of the wall height?

    • @MattBangsWood
      @MattBangsWood  8 месяцев назад +1

      Doubled up 2x6 is for our shear break. I have to have edge nailing for sheathing and it has to be minimum 3x.

      I personally miss it as well, the videos you're going to be seeing over the next few weeks are more of this style.. but I GoPro'd a lot of the building of the roof, upstairs, and other projects. Not straying far from where I came from, it'll make a comeback!

      @@Robmich I've seen guys on the East Coast, New England mainly, locating headers down at the window also. Some say it's just old school and it's a similar climate to here, so....just curious.
