      I did take some video of the whole trip. I have a lot of different videos I need to edit and post. Unfortunately, life crept in and has gotten me really busy. I will do my best to get those video up!

      Thanks for all the great videos. Can you do some post hike gear videos? What worked? What didn’t? Thanks

    Looking forward to the follow up video. You have awesome gear & I have some of the same items, pack, bottles, jacket, etc. I think you ultimately took too much but I am curious what you think after having gone. But I get it, Be Prepared! I go June 2018.

      I actually used most of everything and only left some stuff. The stuff I did leave was duplicate items when considering the other advisors on the trip.

    Curious if they gave you any crud about your smart water bottles.

    I'm curious to know how it turned out as well. I went to Philmont in June 2017 (Crew 611-7C) and headed back for a 12 day trek in 2019 I cringed some of the choices you made. The Mora knife, the extra food items, the large sunscreen and the large Anker battery were all overkill in my opinion after having done the hike. Things like the Leukotape are great, but could've been divided amongst the crew and wrapped around an old credit card or a pencil to save space. How'd the Exos 58 work for you? It's a great bag, but with the crew gear and ALL THAT FOOD they give you in those bags, it appeared smallish. I brought a ULA Circuit which is 68L and it was a tight squeeze at that. (I'll have a few less items on my next go around as well). But the chair IS A NECESSITY for Scouters. 2 Lbs though is a bit heavy. I brought the Helinox Chair Zero at just 16oz and it was PERFECT... albeit a bit costly at over $100... but worth it as my luxury item.

      Hey SoCalDave. For the most part, I removed some of the redundant items carried across multiple advisors. The knife did stay, the extra food did get eaten and the large sunscreen was actually perfect. There will always be scouts who may not remember to bring theirs on side hikes. I didn't use it all but it was 3/4 gone when I got back. I would probably take a bit less, but in the same way.
      When it comes to the battery, I think I made a good call. Here's the reason why. I never really exhausted it before being able to top it up. When it comes to a choice between the Solar charger at 1 lb and the battery (about the same weight) I'll go with the battery and leave the solar charger. Here's why. There just aren't enough times that I used the solar charger. But, I always needed some power for the three different devices I had. I had an iPhone, camera and Garmin inReach (which they suggest that you don't really take - but I did because people at home like to follow your progress). I did use the solar charger to top up the battery while on the move, but with a higher capacity battery, I would just try to plan where I would be topping it up and leave the solar charger at home. One tip is to bring a port duplicator as you never know if if someone else is using power. Of course, if you can say, "Hey, can I keep you plugged in and also get some juice too?" it works out for all concerned.
      The Exos 58 worked great for me! The 2 lbs savings over my other bag is pretty big. I was considering going with the Exos 48, but that would ABSOLUTELY have been too small in terms of volume. The way Philmont does food is really inefficient so you need the extra space, which the 58 had! My biggest reason for going with the Exos over a cottage backpack from ULA or Gossamer is the air suspension system they have. Keeping most of the weight slightly off your back is a big time plus for me. I like it when my sweat can wick off my body instead of being trapped between me and my stuff.

    A chair is not a luxury, it is a necessity

      YEP!!! For anyone over the age of 40 heading out to Philmont, this is ABSOLUTELY CORRECT!!!!! Take the chair. You will NEVER regret this choice. A fellow advisor was debating leaving it because of the weight. He ended up taking it and praises that decision every day. The chair serves two primary purposes. One you may not think of. The first is obviously sitting in it for comfort. The second reason, however is one I consider just as important. It's a place to temporarily place your stuff off the ground. Both for overnight storage and when packing up.
      Yes, you can use your rain cover to keep your stuff dry from the wet ground (remember it does rain out there), but the chair is SO much more convenient. When heading back out to Philmont I will ALWAYS take a chair having had the experience!
      Think about this. Your scouts may not be as informed about tarp placement and orientation. When the weather gets wet and you've decided to just leave some of your stuff out in the open, it's much nicer when the water run off slides smoothly under your chair while your stuff, which isn't on the ground, stays nice and dry under the tarp and off the nice wet earth.

      Awesome, didn't we have such good weather! I had heard the week before us got a lot more rain and go figure, right as we came in through the Wecome Back sign it started that late afternoon downpour. I have some footage of those rain clouds as we came in the trail of tears.

    What was the crew pot that you took? Was it lighter than the pots Philmont provides?

    Did they let you use that tent?

    • @scouttrackrvideos8079
      @scouttrackrvideos8079  6 лет назад +1

      Yes, it was no problem at all. In fact, I LOVED the setup. I have a Lunar Solo (24 oz) from Six Moon Designs and I LOVE that tent for going solo or when I know I don't need the space. However, with the single tarp setup I had TONS of space inside. Enough to move around VERY comfortably with only a slight weight difference above my Six Moon Designs. I also REALLY love the fact that I don't carry any tent poles. Another weight savings. Using both my trekking poles for the tarp worked out great. It's also a pretty easy setup and tear down. You just shove it into the bag. Not having to spend a lot of time with any folding. Just cram it in the stuff sack and go.
      At Philmont, their primary concerns are safety and privacy. Obviously, if you're straight on the ground then you have a high potential for exposure to the elements when using just a tarp. However, because I had the MLD inner net, I was protected from water flow and the bugs. Ultimately, I was VERY happy with the choice!
