There is a woman, Oksana Chusovitina, who is qualified this year for her 8th Olympics. She’s been at every Olympics since ‘92, so she even competed against Dominique!
So she's been at every Olympics since '92, and this will be her 8th Olympics? You little rascal, thinking you can hide your public school math education.
as soon as you said the name Oksana…I knew immediately who you meant. 😂 I remember her at the ‘96 Olympics bc she was very tall (IIRC) and she was excellent. She had a distinct/memorable look (not in a bad way or anything) but that’s crazy she is still competing!
My sister (who was a nationally-ranked gymnast and ended up being a performer for Cirque du Soleil) had a huge poster of Dominique above her bed in our room. Love this woman! :)
I love seeing a literal legend fangirl over Simone Biles...like, THE awesome dawesome fangirling simone, who literally looked up to her growing up. That’s amazing
I still remember watching Dominique Dawes in the ‘96 Olympics and being in awe. That was such a good year for the games because of the Women’s gymnastics team
Refreshing to see some of the older legends heap so much praise on Simone and still marvel at what she can do, even when they themselves are such phenomenal athletes.
Dominique Dawes was the love of my life as a young man. I remember having a massive crush on her as a kid… she is still just as pretty and smart as she’s always been.
That was an amazing team performance in the 1996 Olympics. I still remember holding my breath during some of the routines and also writing in my diary that Dominique will be attending Stanford. =) I also love how much love the amazing Dominique Dawes is giving to Simone. ❤️❤️❤️❤️
Watch someone send Dominique a Barbie now! You know there’s a collector out there! And I remember watching her fall both times at worlds and what a heart break but even without the world titles she’s still a star!
Hi Dominique!! I remember watching you "back in the day",,,25 years ago? Sheesh, how did that happen...lol You are still so so pretty, and it's so nice to see you. Thanks for the video.
Vault is definitely way more scary than rings, because everything on the rings is meant to be absolutely controlled, even the flips and the dismount. With the rings you are grabbing something or at least using that to initiate the dismount, but most of the time you are pressing into a strength position or swinging to it. Vault on the other hand, you run at basically full speed and punch your feet onto a springboard that launches you at a slanted table that you push off of with your arms to then perform a very complex flip and hopefully land on your feet. You can easily hurt yourself on vault because the mats aren't very soft and if you mess up your entry you can't control your body in the air, so you could land on your head or just destroy your ankles/knees with a bad landing (it happens A LOT). I have a friend that completely dislocated her elbow training on vault, because her hands were slightly uneven for the push off. Sure, you're high up with the still rings, but it is one of the most consistent apparatus in gymnastics.
Imagine way back before it was a table how dangerous it was. You were running at almost full speed onto a springboard and trying to find your footing on a long block.
@@wendyokoopa7048 oh, yeah, and the women were already doing yurchenko entries back then, when their vault was a literal pommel horse without the handles. Imagine trying to spot the vault backwards when it's like, 35 cm wide.
So humble! A lot of people don't give her enough credit for that 1996 Olympics. She was the only one of the seven to have all her event scores contribute to the final total. Whereas, some people might have had a high showing in one or two events and messing up in others - she was THE MOST CONSISTENT!!!
I have to agree with Dominique on the old vault. To imagine it a little better for people who don't want to look it up? Imagine a pommel horse with the metal bars removed and possibly shortened and you have vault. 😳.
Honey is a big staple of men's gym, less so women's - particularly parallel bars. Some add it for pommel, but it's more a grip additive, less used for swinging bars styles! But, it's been front 'n center in the MAG chalk bucket for a long time.
And Dominique, can we not mention Oksana Chusovitina for record setting? The woman is 45, competing before Simone was even born, and going for her EIGHTH OLYMPICS!
Not everyone is checking for her like that. Dawes have a lot going on give the woman a break it’s not that serous. Dawes is the only American woman that went to the Olympics in gymnastics three times . That’s what she was talking about making history as an American
@@SS-fb5ve I've seen comments like that too. I hate to say it as a fan of the sport but the online gymnastics audience can be quite uninformed. Thus as a result there is a lot of misinformation being spread across the place. Things typically only get banned if they're either too dangerous, or changes in the equipment essentially eliminate them (like the widening of the distance between the bars resulting in the elimination of 'belly beat' skills).
whether a gymnast is wearing grips or not actually doesn't have to do much with costs, but it's just preference! take a look at Lieke Wevers for example, she doesn't use grips but the Netherlands has those readily available
Very inspiring for someone (Me) who never heard about the magnificent seven. I love the stories of the sensational team that brought gold to their nations. Amazing!
The first 15 seconds of this video unlocked my long-forgotten memory of a time when I was about 7, when me and my gymnastics friends made it our mission to dig and dive to the bottom of the foam pit to see what was there. Good times 😂
@@mrparts absolutely. I don't doubt back in the 90s some gymnasts were unable to have a stockpile of grips, but nowadays I think it's pretty much of a standard. Not to say, for example Russian gymnast currently can make a very decent living as gymnasts, while American gymnasts don't earn much money for _just_ being gymnasts.
Oh cool, some of my girls and I met her when we were still in competitive gymnastics. She was really funny, we kept trying to get her to race us (we were kids, probably about ten years old) and she would start to run and then stop immediately, so we just kept running without her only to realize she totally duped us. 😂😂
I think you guys should bring her back, and let her do a reaction to a TV show called make it or break it. On one episode, the boys and girls elite teams swapped, so the girls had to do the boys routines and the boys had to do the girls routine
Back in the 70's with Nadia and Olga, the bars were scary to me. I couldn't figure out how they didn't have internal bleeding after banging their stomachs on the lower bar. I'm very glad they moved the bars back. Now, the beam has always been scary. Good luck to our Olympians in France.
Men use honey in gymnastics for Parallel Bars. We use it to sticky up the bars in combination with chalk (hence why it's in the chalk bucket) in order to cake the chalk on the bar and swing better on the apparatus. We also use it to cake chalk on the high bar too, but mostly p-bars.
I’ve seen guys put the honey straight on the parallel bars and then rub the chalk right on the honey for it to stick to and it helps make everything all chalked up.
