  • Grand Canyon vistas are indeed grand and complex. But doing quick studies of that or any complicated subject means you may need to zero in on a few sample areas to keep from being overwhelmed. I'll show you my process for doing 2 Grand Canyon studies in a toned-tan sketchbook.

Steve, I comment on your videos a lot because I always feel good after watching them. First, congratulations to you and your wife on another year of a successful marriage. That is a beautiful achievement. As for your work, you make it look easy and that encourages me to try. I know that you've been painting for years and that's why it looks easy, but your experience and talent are a blessing for the RUclips audience. Thank you for having this channel.

What a great idea to use the toned paper for the second, snow in the canyon scene.

Excellent. One of the side benefits for me was learning more about tan paper, which I had just purchased and now I really cannot wait for it to arrive. On another note I truly appreciated the help with narrowing my paintings to emphasize one thing, rather than the entire universe!. May you have many more years of happiness together.

Omgoodness! Loved your vignette and your choice of the tan watercolor paper, very cool. Also loved your use of the transparent watercolor as well as the white gouache! You sure make it look easy! I hate to say it but I have always been into music and your background music made it all seem that more majestic!! Could watch and listen for at least another hour!! ;) Thank you so much for sharing a part of your anniversary with your Lady, congrats to you both!!

Enjoyed watching you paint a western scene, Steve. And your advice to do vignettes is good in these vast open vistas. Mountains are like that too. You just want to gobble them up somehow in one work, which is impossible. I just returned from Oaxaca, Mexico with my family. And, like many, I wanted somehow to paint those vast scenes, like at the Monte Alban Zapotec ruins. Thankfully, I only had my sketchbook and a few pencils, so I ended up with some great little studies.

Love this. I live by the Grand Canyon. You are right it takes your breath away with its grandeur. I would love it if you could come back out and take in southern and eastern par of Utah. There are canyons that are spectacular. I would love to see what you would pick and how you would draw in the details to capture the red rock formations. I love America every where you travel there is something beautiful to see. And when you draw and paint your choices are endless. Happy painting.

Hullo Steve, I have been to “The Canyon” twice, but it has been many years! I first saw it when just 9 and then again at 12 when I had started watercolors with my Gran. I went several times with my aunt the second time. She went on Tuesday’s often several times a month! She never liked going on the weekends, to many tourists! I wish I had saved my work from back then, my Mom kept them, but they were stored and I did not find them after she had passed. I am looking forward to seeing your versions in watercolor! See ya next video!

Steve...I am a relatively new subscriber and am enjoying your channel immensely. So when I clicked on there this week I had a fun surprise. Your rendition of the Grand Canyon was delightful. My husband's great grandfather, William Wallace Bass, started the first tourist camp at the Canyon in 1884. He entertained the likes of Zane Grey, John Muir, Henry Ford and a name you will know...
Thomas Moran...just to name a few. Several years ago I wrote a book about the family..."Stories the Canyon Keeps. It won the Best of the West 2019 award from True West Magazine. Looking forward to more of your " Canyon Vignettes"....

These are lovely!! You know I'm a huge fan of beige paper
Also WOW even just the short clip where you walk up to the rim, it's mind blowing how vast it is...and I know it doesn't do it justice. I hope I can go someday.
REALLY looking forward to seeing your plein air session there.

Love it. It's true it's hard to capture the scope of the Grand Canyon. I have tried just using black gouache, Derwent charcoal paint set and markers. Also watercolor. Have to rely on photos. Hope you can post some of your pictures.

Someone needs to make tan watercolor paper. The results against that background color are so vivid but I don't trust myself to use the right amounts of water. Happy anniversary, btw! Our 30th is coming up next month!

re you comment towards the beginning of the video about the disconnect that you feel when viewing the canyon, I remember that sense. I felt like I was seeing a movie backdrop painting of a canyon even as it was before me. it was kind of difficult to comprehend the whole canyon...
