To me, I have owned MSM wedge and it is not that ease for perfect polar align if we are using Phone app polar align. This is because Phone app has more room of polar align error that you need to fine tune the base to left or right a lot and that MSM wedge has a limited of turning left and right (even less than 90 degree I guess). So now I am swithing to the geared head like your one but different maker and I will try it out this year.
My MSM wedge is mounted on a rotating panorama base, otherwise I'd have to agree the limited left right rotation is too restrictive. Being away two months without my MSM, I found the wedge nice for lining up telephoto shots of the moon, and crashing waves at Waimea Beach in Hawai'i. Since then I've used the wedge often for scenics as well. It did require me putting together a 90° Arca wedge clamp and plate since the wedge was not set up for "L" brackets mounted on a camera body. I like the wedge smallness in size for easy packing. Admittedly, it seems way undersized for a 300 mm f2.8 lens I've been using with a 2x telephoto conveter. But for blur free moon images I set the shutter to a 3 second delay. A remote shutter release would be handier but in deliberately keeping things to a minimum, I chose to use the shutter release delay built into the Nikon Z6 camera.
Hi. Have you made a vlog on how to use the benro geared head with the MSM? I have one and am planning on buying the MSM so would be nice to see how it works. Thanks
I bought one of these Benro heads from MSM too. 20% off with the Christmas discount and no high import fees for me. I went with the V platform. Bargain. 👍🏻
Congrats on the new toys! I'm looking into buying the MSM Wedge do to it's form factor and weight since most of the shoots I do are on the middle of no where but on the facebook group I see no many people are pleased with the build quality and durability. Now that you've had the Benro GearHead for over 6 months, do you think its worth the extra weight and money? I'm looking for some help around this. (I currently have the MSM Rotator with the Z and V mount plates but I'm looking for a better way to get micro adjustments for the polar alignment.
I've had a great experience with the wedge... when I'm hiking just for astro I bring the wedge. If I'm planning on doing other landscape shots or am not hiking far I prefer the quality of the benro
I am looking forward to your Benro review. I assume your current wedge is the one that MSM sells. The Benro is certainly much bigger and heavier albeit with greater capacity. Curious how the usability of the two solutions compare within their respective capacity limitations. Thanks keep up the great review/tutorials!
This head is also fantastic for landscape photography!
I'm excited to get it out there
looking forward to watching how this kit installed and how it is used in the field. Thanks
I'm excited too

I'll have to test out both... but that geared head has been great so far

Yes, it's the msm wedge. I'm interested to see what I like better as well. The gear head is a lot bigger, probably not for back packing
I'm sure you know now that the large knobs are used to quick release an axis. You can then move an axis through its range of motion very rapidly.
I did learn that after a bit of playing... when i 1st got, I honestly had no idea
So, what is your verdict on the Benro gear head?
Love it! Love it love it. Very precise adjustments and super stable
Now that's what I call a quick reply! Thank you!
I was catching up on old comments when it popped up. timing was perfect
lol manual.
Yeah, published anyways... it's that confidence or laziness?
