    • @Paul_Lucas

      For the vast majority of people, no. The best programme depends on your travel pattern. ANZ worked for me due to a need to acquire status using discount business class fares and a lack of interest in spending rewards, but that’s not the case for most people.

      I bet this wasn't even considered because the person who upgraded those passengers was at check in unaware of any issues on that plane. I also bet their system doesn't even inform them of inoperative passenger seats and equipment when they are looking to upgrade other passengers and to first accommodate paying passengers who paid months in advance. Also, at the least, the flight attendants should be aware of this and make changes in the cabin, or at least offer the option of moving seats from a broken one. I don't see why they wouldn't even know about a broken seat, especially in the 2nd flight of the day etc. Though that may not be in this case to Hawaii. I know the pilots get a report of equipment issues, and the pilots always have a briefing with the cabin crew, wouldn't that be mentioned in flight briefing? There are lots of potential opportunities this could have been dealt with, but it appears there is no system in place..

    • @chrismckellar9350
      @chrismckellar9350 4 года назад +15

      @@marcusdamberger - I agree. The Inflight service Manager's have to write up reports on cabin issues and report any faults to the flight crew, so then in turn would have report to United ground operations in SFO of the seat fault, who in turn should have blocked out the seat prior to arrival in SFO, considering it was being used for another flight sector. The Gate Agent/s should have informed Paul of the faulty seat and re-issued another boarding pass with a new seat number. That is standard practice with majority of full service airlines especially for premium passengers and Gold Star Alliance passengers.

    A thing I really like about Paul is how reasonable of a reviewer he is. If something disappoints him, he says it, but doesn’t act like it’s the end of the world or is reason to throw a fit. Which to be honest is how most of us actually are when we fly. To me it’s a more realistic appraisal

      Paying cash for a broken business class seat might be fine in your reality. However in my reality paying for business class seats is not just petty cash. To be fair, when the compensation only was 200 bucks in airline budget those business class seats must be extremely cheap over there in the USA in comparison to where I live. Over here one needs to save VERY long with a normal income in order to afford flying business class.

    • @Papershields001
      @Papershields001 Год назад

      @@2point7182818284590 I was mentioning how much I appreciate Paul’s stalwart attitude. I wasn’t endorsing standing accepting mediocrity.
      I will note that domestically in the US the routes are usually short, the longest being transcontinental or out to Hawaii. So a lot of times paying tons of extra for business class doesn’t make a lot of sense. Maybe where you come it’s normal to have a fit when the seats aren’t to your liking, but that’s usually looked down upon in the states.

    In 2001, I was about to take my first trans Atlantic flight. I met a girl from the Netherlands in college the year before, and I was going to meet her there for the first time (she had visited once since leaving after a semester). It was on United, a 777 from O'Hare. I met a few nice people I talked to at the gate, being nervous makes me talkative. One lady was older, and was not looking forward to the flight crammed into economy, but she couldn't afford more. I was called to the gate and offered an upgrade, but I politely declined and asked if they could offer it to the older lady. Just the way my dad raised me, I couldn't take something I didn't pay for. Hope she liked it, though. Flying first class on my first trip would have ruined me for flying.
    I'm flying ORD-BRU on United in the summer for a vacation to be with her mother and sister. Hoping it's as good as your 787 domestic flight.

    The last time I flew United, it was the worst experience I've had in the air. Round trip from Pensacola Fl to Salt Lake City Ut. First aircraft had flaps issues, and we touched down so hard I hit the seat in front of me, Second aircraft had to be replaced, causing a 6 hour delay. The delay wouldn't have been bad, except it was at night, in Houston, and everything in the Houston airport closes at 10. The replacement aircraft needed a tire replaced, causing another 45 minute delay. Landing on that aircraft was something out of an amusement park, with the pilot bouncing it 3 times.
    On the return trip, we had an unspecified aircraft malfunction that cause us yet another delay.
    The only flight that went off without a hitch was the very last flight on a United Express, but that's likely because those aircraft are leased from JetBlue.

    Paul, I completely agree with you about United. As I commented in one of your earlier United reviews, I typically have a fifty-fifty relationship with them. fifty percent of the time, everything is wonderful - great food, wonderful employees, and real hospitality, but the other fifty percent oft he time the experience is anything but stellar. I'm an old Continental Airlines frequent flyer who became a United one by virtue of the merger, not by choice. I fly them because they go where I typically go, Cleveland and Hawaii, for halfway decent prices and with good scheduling, not because they're necessarily my first choice.
    Sorry about the seat. The same thing happened to us flying first a year or so ago on Hawaiian in one of their venerable 767s a few months before they were retired. I'd say half of first class had inoperable seats, and Hawaiian simply didn't want to spend the time and money to fix the seats, especially with retirement so close. United isn't the only airline to not repair broken equipment promptly, but they really should have handled the seat assignment issue better.
    You were lucky to get food, even if it wasn't that great. On two of my last three United flights in biz/first, they're run out of food. Or, more precisely, they stock two meal options but the people in the first few rows get their orders taken first, so those in the last few rows of biz/first get whatever is leftover. This seems especially true in narrowbodies. Over Thanksgiving CLE-LAX on a United 73, I was able to get some fairly decent Eggs Benedict, but the rest of my family, seated in the last row of biz/first, was left with a "protein plate," as they called it, consisting of some dry lunch meat, some nuts and and a few greens. They complained and got several thousand United Miles in compensation, but it was a serious letdown, and hardly a first class breakfast experience. The moral of the story: get a seat in the first couple of rows to ensure you'll get a choice of meals. I'm surprised you didn't get a menu since I always have.
    To make matters worse, my next trip on United in April is also to Hawaii, outbound SNA-SFO-OGG. I was looking forward to flying in one of those quirky 772s with the old interiors, but no. I just found out that they've downgraded the equipment from a 772 to a 738. Strange, as that's a massive reduction in capacity for a flight that's normally full over Spring Break. As a result, the biz/first section is the same old underwhelming seat only, with no real privacy. Some will say that I shouldn't complain, but I'm a public school teacher and I save religiously to be able to afford good travel experiences so it is a disappointment.
    Anyway, I'm slowly detecting some improvements from United, mainly from employees who are somewhat less surly with such regularity. The flight attendants seem more helpful, though this is inconsistent, and some follow the rules about bin stowage, or the first class lav being for first class, some not. It was an issue during our last flight when those of us who had paid for biz/first weren't able to use "our" lavatory because the flight attendants allowed the Economy passengers to do so. I normally don't have an issue if its something involving a small child or an emergency, obviously, but when you've paid extra to be able to use that service and then aren't able to, well, its a problem. The gate agents seem nicer, and the check in folks at LAX were, in a word, outstanding. They were also wonderful on our return from CLE arranging for a ride for my mother, who is 80 and has trouble walking. So, there are good things happening, in my view. They're just happening slowly, perhaps far too slowly.

      I live in Chicago and this summer was the FIRST time I flew with United Airlines and flew in their Polaris Business class.
      Their Polaris lounge is amazing but when I got on the airplane, it was the 2-2-2 business class layout. However, the soft product is what does it for me. HUGE let down. I think I had to press the call button several times before someone attended to me. Then I was like "I'll have the tomato soup with the toasted cheese sandwich". The flight attendant guy was like "we don't have that". "Ummmm...I can see the sign on the cart that says "t.soup" and "grilled cheese" He is then like "oh, I guess we do"
      Unless the ticket is cheap, I think I'll stick with Air Canada, ANA and Eva Air. Heck, even China Eastern does a little better than they do.

    Story time: They were two hours late for departure to Chicago, cancelled my flight to Newark from Chicago and booked me on another plane which was on the other side of O'hare making me sprint to catch it in the allotted 15 minutes, sent me off to Atlanta and delayed my flight for 4 hours before boarding then being sent back to the gate halfway to the runway, finally cancelled the flight 6 hours later, at that point I had been counting the number of commuter jets leaving for D.C. and remembered that the Acela exists, when I asked if I could go to D.C. instead of Newark as an alternative to a hotel in Atlanta they were like "oh yeah, sure, not an issue, why didn't you say something earlier?", at this point I was 3 red bulls in and had been awake for 38 hours so I just sat and angrily waited the 15 minutes for the Bombardier to get ready. I complained via email and they didn't even respond.
    TL;DR: United is great at turning a 7 hour trip into a 20 hour nightmare.

    Darn... I am a ramp worker for UA here at SFO... had I known you were passing through, it would have been cool to connect with you on your layover. I was working that day haha.
    Since you filmed this, UA has placed an order for 50 A-321’s and will begin to phase out these old 757-200’s slowly. The more rare 757-300’s are here to stay for some time longer, but they don’t have the international business class product like what you flew on - they’re more like a standard “first class domestic seat.”

    I'd say the worst part of this debacle was the canned response from United. This is their final opportunity to make things as right as they possibly can and they even turned that into a disaster. I avoid United as much as I can. They put on a great show in very competitive markets, but the true essence of this carrier can be found on flights like the one you were on. They know more than half the plane are frequent flyer mile users and they treat passengers like they're on public assistance.

    It's sad that they got rid of the old 747s, rode those from SFO/LAX back to HNL (Honolulu) during the late 90s/early 2000s when going back home from college. Those were always fun to hop on. The 757 made me feel like cattle. Even Hawaiian Airlines with their A330s/767s were a godsend (not so sure about the 321s). I'm glad you had a decent trip but it sucks about the seat. Unfortunately, the broken seat could have happened on any airline and they'd much rather send the plane out anyway instead of canceling the flight. That said, I absolutely agree that the broken seat should have been saved for an upgrade and not a full fare passenger. But in any event, you did the right thing by contacting the airline and getting a travel credit instead of complaining to the flight crew like some people tend to do. Anyway, looking forward to your LHR to EWR flight especially considering EWR is my hometown airport. Safe travels!

    Hi Paul, did you speak to the flight's Infight Services Manager or just to the flight attendants in Business Class (First Class) about the seat and the fact 2 upgrades took the remaining serviceable seats? Most normal airlines would have block out the seat and give you a new seat number but then you are flying United domestic.

    I completely agree with this inconsistency which means everything isn’t all bad and it can have good moments. I flew EWR- SFO and they served complimentary meals which I wasn’t expecting. However the First Class flight attendant scolded me in the most rude manner because I was using her cabin’s toilets as I was instructed by another flight attendant as my seat was just behind First. After I returned to my seat, she even had the nerve to say that since I was traveling on an employee’s ticket I shouldn’t talk back to her. I wasn’t, she was so stupid that couldn’t even get that right and as a paying customer I told her how rude she was. My next flight SFO-SIN was a 17 hr nightmare, during dinner drink service I asked for second drink and she refused and said will be back and never did. First time that ever happens.

    I would like to speak to your point on lounges. United’s lounge in the rotunda is a “legacy lounge.” Its great because it gives you the sense of experiencing the classic United. (This was also the first lounge I was ever in with United.) Unfortunately, like all American carriers, they are basing their new lounges off of one footprint with very little distinction. If you are a United enthusiast, there are very few legacy lounges left...

    FWIW I concur that going into San Francisco proper from SFO is a pretty arduous trip for any short layover. However if you want something actually to eat that’s not in an airport the community of Burlingame is 10-15 minute drive from the airport and pretty easy to get to - popular place for business conferences. If you want for example a great seafood lunch or dinner check out New England Lobster Market and Eatery, one of the best fish places I’ve ever eaten at and very casual, and as a southern Californian that’s high praise.
    Just to be a California geographic pain, Burbank is in the San Fernando Valley outside LA so it’s south not north ;)

    Classic United haha. My first thought was that 757s still flying is pretty odd considering the other much newer aircrafts that have already all but been retired by most airlines now. I actually had thought it was only cargo airlines that still utilized the 57s. Also that drink and nuts thing is a classic. I remember when I was a kid in '97 flying to Reno and that was signature. So it's quite fitting of a 57 I'd say.
