For traditional jazz, instead of the upright bass or the electric bass guitar, I think the low C or the low B Bb contrabass, the low C Eb octocontralto or even the low C octocontrabass clarinet should all play on the bass side, as long as they both have a special pickup to plug into the bass amplifier.

I played bassoon on this piece in college. Same as bari sax part. Contrabassoon played the c.b. clarinet part.

I think the contrabass clarinet is a little bit louder than the double bass, because it has a fewer notes deeper than that.
