Seeing the Nerd being happy is such a rare treat but funny as hell 1:25-1:30 funniest part of the video, I still have tears of laughter streaming down my face.
2:40 "Popcorn" is a clue that tells you that you can use the fire bubbles to "pop" the enemies; note how the lower platforms sort of resemble a frying pan or a sauce pan.
Level 57. Most bubbles will stack in the middle. Hop up high enough and the barriers that hang down will enable you to blow bubbles in place making it easier to get to the top.
Level 57 is the hardest level. The first time I beat it I did it myself and got the bad ending. I beat it the next day with my neighbor and got the good ending. We even went back through the game and died on every level to write down all the passwords. That's how addictive this game could be!
This was the only game my (late) grandmother would play with me back in the day. So I can't see any flaws in this game and this review brings back so many memories.
This was one of my favorite games on the NES, and I actually beat it, both the good and bad ending. There was a remake of this game that included all the original levels and several extras but the strength of the bubbles was lowered, and how the dinosaurs moved was changed. For most levels the game felt exactly the same but with brighter colors and a bit nicer graphics, however it became very difficult to jump on your own bubbles because they would pop too easily. There are some levels in the remake that are actually impossible to beat because of this.
Uuugh, yeah, I played that on XBox 360, IIRC. It made me so upset. 😟 If you didn't get lucky enough to warp past 57, it was literally a self-soft-lock. Pretty much a scam. I don't know if that ever got patched or not. It was on one of my brother's accounts & he just discarded them all the time, along with the games on them for some reason... But as far as I know, losing that broken Bubble Bobble remake was no loss at all. Good riddance.
Don't forget the GIANT prize that falls from the sky when you pop a lot of enemies and bubbles in a single hit! That is SOOOOO satisfying! Huge cakes, Ice creams, gems, fruit! Extra guy guaranteed!
Bubble Bobble was one of the best bonding moments I had with my brother as a child. We did a co-op run of it almost every weekend. Love this game, although the music did grate on you a little bit.
Total classic - actually my favorite arcade game. The popcorn level has a big frying pan, and you drop the fire into the frying pan and the enemies hit the fire and fly out like popcorn. And that was a chocolate cream cake. And there's no point questioning anything in Bubble Bobble, just accept it, find a close friend to play with and enjoy it :D
Surprised the convoluted ending system wasn't mentioned. I know in the arcade game you got the good ending by beating the final boss in two-player mode, _specifically._ But, this ending gives you a ciphered code. Decipher it and you've got a button code which activates a hard mode called "Super Bubble Bobble". Beat _that_ in two player mode, and you've got the best ending. I hear the NES version is even more cryptic than that, though.
One of my favorite games of my childhood. For years, it haunted me because I could never beat it. Last Christmas, my cousin and I finally decided to beat it. We destroyed the final boss only to realize we have to get the little bible on level 99. Only then can you beat the game, but you have to then go through all 100 levels again. Maddening. Great game though.
This game has iconic value for me considering me and my cousin wrapped this a ton of times together in 2 player mode...He passed away a few years back so it’s always good memories to watch this game being played!!!BTW did you play and enjoy any three of these titles!!!Buster bro’s/Tumble pop or Snow bro’s?...
I love Bubble Bobble, it's the only game I know of that gives you a bad ending for beating it solo. The game becomes so much more fun and manageable with two players, but if you thought 57 was bad, have I got news for you; it only gets harder. If any of you have a Wii/U, I highly recommend picking this up on the Virtual Console and playing with a friend/sibling. See how long you can go before a fistfight breaks out over who gets the candy powerups.
Yeah, but that feels like cheating to me. Plus, if I'm playing the game, chances are that my brother wants to play too, so why not have a helping hand? I'm not good enough to beat the game solo anyway.
+Antifrost AHAHHAHA I have been there man with my brother OMG!!, memories and you're 100% correct my mother had to only take that game away cause she saw that was the only game that broke my brother and i apart from playing videogames still good times !!
Bubble bobble is one of my fav classics. I even made a replica of the green dragon. I love the music so much. I also adore the related puzzle game, puzzle bobble, equally lovable
"This is the song that neverrrrrrrrr ends... yes it goes on and on my friends!" Lamb Chops Play-along is all I think of with this tune. I did have many a fun day as a kid conquering this game though! Oh the memories
Bubble Bubble was a success in every conversion of the game. I played it a lot Commodore 64 version which was like half of the speed of the arcade game and half of the graphic. AND IT WAS STILL AWESOME!!
The popcorn is in the bubbles with the 'kernel' that expands on the ground when you pop it. It kills enemies and slows your progress with a great character sprite like it just got shocked
I freaking love playing this! The same thing happened to me when i played the arcade version of bubble bobble with my dad, I coudn't stop playing until i beat it!
i had the music for this game as my ring tone for a while. try it, everytime your phone rings people will know the song but cant remember what the heck it came from. still a great game even today
I loved this game.. got it on the virtual console a few years ago and had a fun night with a buddy beating it a few times. Much more fun with 2 players!
Me and my sister got this game for Easter way back in the day and it was the first and last time I ever got anything other than candy for easter! bubble bobble is a classic!!!

This is why we never see the nerd ever play any good games

The remastered version of this game is really fun
It's been more than 20 years now, still got that tune stapled to my brains ._____.

"It's rainin' ghosts...Halleluyah!"
In the popcorn level all the bubbles gravitate toward the frying pan, where you pop the mass of enemies, hopefully without burning yourself.
I love the intro screen with the different colored bubbles rising.
Loved that game!

Its pretty cool James has been doing these mini reviews for the marathon for years now. Always fun to get bonus Nerd content.
Level 57: Bane of my existence.
Flame Soulis the only way I ever got past that level was when I lucked out in getting one of those "kill every monster instantly" power-ups.
Level 57 my most hated thing about growing up in the 80s...well, that and church.

you can get the good ending solo you just have to press start on the second controller before popping the bubble encasing the final boss.
