I've often wondered why we don't build more homes like we do ships: In modules. The modules could even be standardized so that they would always fit together flawlessly and so that the customer could always have a selection of different building styles, all using the standard modules and fittings. Now we just have to design a couple-dozen floor-pads that will accommodate the modules, including hookups for water, electricity, waste, and gas infrastructure. And we need to make them tough enough to survive hurricanes, tornadoes, blazing heat and blistering cold for weeks on end, and flash floods, while also being up-gradable.
