Kanye West v. 50 Cent was such a monumental moment for hip hop as a culture and its trajectory commercially. It was one hell of a selling pitch to the public and it was the one of the purest challenges in hip hop. Certified Kanye as a hip hop legend and almost a passing of a torch from 50, as well as signaling the end of the reign of gangsta/thug hip hop. AND they were both great albums!! 'What a time'...

Came out the gate with a classic in 'GRODT', followed it up with a SMASH in 'The Massacre'. LEGEND. There has NEVER been an artist outside of MAYBE Drake to have such a buzz around their debut and then not only deliver but SURPASS expectations

The day Kanye West killed Gangster Rap, or at least made it more niche. Besides maybe ScHoolboy Q and Kendrick Lamar, most of the popular rappers today aren't super hood. Kanye really opened the door for people like Big Sean, Drake, J. Cole, Childish Gambino, Logic, Wale, and Chance The Rapper. Even Ak's man Vic Mensa once said that Kanye choked the lane on Gangster Rap.

Kanye never had a ghost writer. He's had help with one liners here and there and he's admitted to it shamelessly. He always used to rap about writer's block before due to all the stress and dramas in his life. But left to his own devices Kanye can write circles around most rappers in the game. Him choosing to get help from other artists is more of a luxury for him than a need.

Ahh yes, the 50 vs Kanye "beef". When Kanye moved up his album release to the same day as 50's Curtis. This was amazing at the time, 50 was leading the "bling bling/gangsta rap" movement, while Kanye was pushing the "conscious rap" movement (This was Kanye at his prime for those that don't know.) It ended the "Gangsta rap" in mainstream hiphop forever. Thus began the "Jerking" movement which lasted like a year, then came the trap and then the shit we have now (I may be wrong.) But yeah, this competition between these two was legendary.

Regardless of whether or not 50 outsold Ye the change of guard in hip hop and the industry period was reaching a boiling point. This was going to happen with or without this matchup. Hip hop NEEDED it too in order to evolve and become the dominate genre it is today. Artist like Missy, Ye, Lauryn, Pharrell, Outkast etc etc had already laid the groundwork for that shift. Jay-Z was ahead of the curve on that front. Already had work with Pharrell, Ye and others causing the shift. 'Retired' and poised to come back to rap as a breath of fresh air to the public due to all the monotony goin on in music

However Joe is right again, when he says 50 Cent's arrogance was his ultimate downfall. This man wasn't just bullying and beefing with every rapper in the game, he was openly insulting Jimmy Iovine and was just overall so polarizing that a lot of people wanted him to lose.

I remember listening to Curtis and I just thought to myself that 50 didn't have anything else to talk about. 50 was done. All of the songs that ak is saying "didn't connect" definitely did. 50 and Kanye were the most talked about artists around that time and that conversation lasted for so long. Stop discrediting artists just for the argument. Joe is right for once. This was a business scheme that went great for Universal. 50 and Kanye sold this feud so well that it sold out seats in their fanbase.

    • @rodinyt1430

Billboardguy1 I agree that some of the songs didn't hit so high but no other acts were being acknowledged as hard as 50 and Kanye were collectively. I agree that this all was a scheme to get higher sales and that's what they achieved doing. Their goals were met regardless of how well songs did in anyone's opinion.

But think about it. You're the label heads and your top artists is arrogant and disrespectful to you. You have a budding artist who is ALSO on your label. What do you have to lose in making this match-up and creating this fake "beef"? As the label you can ensure victory of one artist by supporting his album while giving a lackadaisical effort to the other one.

50 first single for curtis was that "Amusement Park" shit that was basically "Candy shop" all over again. Next was "straight to the bank" didn't perform well as just wasnt really good. "I get money" was huge but the remix really juiced it. "Ayo technology" was the last single b4 the album dropped and was just ok. Kanye had only 2 singles "Cant Tell Me nothing" (and the remix wit Jeezy on it) and "Stronger" and did his numbers. 50 didnt have a record nowhere near as big as "Stronger". Furthermore Joe trippin if he think 50 didnt mastermind the whole "competition". Beef/competition was part of his marketing strategy his whole career. Everything he did was geared around bullying or tryna make someone else look inferior to push himself up and sell his records. Ja Rule for GRODT Fat Joe The Lox for Massacre Kanye for Curtis Rick Ross BISD

Kanye won because Kanye had a mass appeal with his music. Dropping songs like Cant Tell me Nothing, Stronger, Good Life, and Homecoming. Thats 4 homeruns in a row…..50s Straight to the bank, I get money, Ayo Technology, I still kill….1 homer, 2 ok songs, I don't even remember what I Still Kill sounds like. Kanye won. And because of this he killed the gangsta hood tough guy persona that most rappers had. It was perfectly fine to be clean cut and had gone to college. That along with his grammy performances launched his career into A-list superstardom.

50 Cent career ending was just a matter of time. People obviously got tired of Gangsta Club Rap. Plus, 50 was arrogant as Joe Budden acknowledged - so arrogant he wouldn't believe that greater quality well composed music made by a producing rapper could ever beat him. That alone had nothing to do with labels. Off course, labels took the opportunity to then shut 50 down. Even when music trends change every 4-5 years - Kanye delivered 2 classic masterpieces and he was building his empire since - there's no way he could lose that battle! Let's not forget 50 lost for Kanye... TWICE!
