Amazing video with truely beautiful images of that area. Hearing your thoughts and shared feelings of just how big and impressive (intemidating?) those waves are but how time and experience with great coaches and other paddlets helped expand your skills hit a note in my own memories from last year. Love what you are doing, keep it up! and Thanks

Love the video Steve and it definitely brings back great memories! I really like the balance of action footage with your thoughtful commentary, especially the perceived / actual risk segment. Plus gotta say that slot you run at 15:20 was the perfect clip to complement and nicely done! 🙌 Looking forward to more of your videos!

Glad you enjoyed it. And it's fun when footage and narrative line up so well--like that slot run! Thanks for watching, and I appreciate your support.

Definitely some of the best coaches out there! Love paddling with Bill. I like your thoughts on perceived vs actual risk. I teach quite a bit in dynamic conditions - current, wind, waves covering everything from paddling in those sea states to rescues. The biggest conversation on the beach prior to launch is the risk assessment - and what students perceive the risks to be. Once in the environment, I'll often have an assistant capsize and exit - let the students see the ACTUAL risk is far less. That immediately changes perceptions. The other side of that as we get more experience - sometimes we minimize the actual risk - always something I am keenly aware of.
As for anticipating the brace - always good to think through the move - but I also find staying relaxed really helps. I try not to focus too much which way I may need to brace and more 'feel' it. That does come with some experience. LOVE that you referenced listening to your boat and slowing down. THAT IS EVERYTHING!

Great observations and insights! I'm glad what I've shared in the video resonated with you. And, yeah, I didn't get into it in the episode but there is certainly a danger that a bit of skill can have us minimize or downplay what's actually happening. Thanks for watching and taking the time to share!

Like Phil, I also know a bunch of that group. Quite a number of us have made that journey, both the physical trip to Ensenada, and the psychological journey of development. One of our paddling friends likes to call it a "re-calibration", which refers to your point of being able to realize how big our "big stuff" on the East Coast really isn't all that big, but just different. Your video brought back so many memories for me, and I could actually feel myself rising up on the swells getting ready to ride the wash over the rocks! I have also found kayak surfing to be one of the most fun and most frustrating things to learn, but just doing it reinforces so many other kayaking skills. I hope you get the chance to do some surfing back home.

I love the idea of "re-calibration"! I may borrow that! 😬 I'm glad to hear I could bring you back to Baja, that means so much to me. I'm still on the lookout for reliable surf spots along the rockbound coast of Downeast Maine. It's tough to justify a 7-hour round trip for a few hours of surfing when there is so much great paddling out my back door. Thanks for your thoughts, feedback, and support.

Great video, in fact I’m enjoying all your videos so far. My wife and I are from Maine but currently living in Ecuador. Hope to go back up to the mid coast area to visit this common summer and very much hope to do some kayaking

More great stuff. I’m catching up on my favorite kayak channels. Thanks for posting. Looking forward to the next one. I’ll be in Belfast, Maine in mid August for a week. Maybe I see you at the random boat ramp. Best Dave

Glad you liked this one. It was fun to make and a bit of a departure from the format I've established over the first few episodes. Enjoy Belfast! Do you have your eyes on any paddling locations?

@@SeeSteveSeaKayak I’m up with my GF who also paddles. So we will need to rent Yaks. Hate to rent, love my boat, feel like I’m cheating! Ha. We’d be up for any place mid coast. Do you know a good sea kayak rental company? I think they rent in Belfast but want to avoid double seat rec. boats and paddling around a harbor. Less tourists the better., ex., Bar Harbor.
      Thanks for your time.

I won't tell your boat if you don't! HA! My best resources for sea kayak rentals in that area are with Sea Kayak Stonington. (www.upwestanddowneast.com/rentals). Michael and Rebecca are awesome! Tell them I said "hi". If you're renting in Stonington, that's a great place to paddle (check out my episode "Staying Safe on a Sorry Winter Paddle")! Michael and Rebecca can also offer great guided experiences if you wanted some local knowledge. The other side of MDI around Bartlett's Landing is a way to explore MDI without getting into Bar Harbor and the tourist--just be ready for some current between MDI and Bartlett Island. You could also check out Naskeag Point. There is an easy town landing and some fun islands in that area to explore. Have fun, stay safe, and maybe I'll see you out there!

Awesome video! I really liked your commentary on perceived vs. real risk and seeking that zen like state in the rough. Funny I know about 9 of the people you list at the end, small world and a great bunch of paddlers. Someday I'll make it down there.
