    If it’s white on the inside, perfectly edible. They are just yummy. We usually peal them first. Then cooor fry or grill. Gary oil adds goo flavor too.

    I'm absolutely fascinated with the fact that you talk like a TV presenter even when you're just hanging out! I thought it was like a way of speaking that presenters only used when presenting! I'm also totally jealous because it is a way of speaking that I think, commands respect as you sound really knowledgeable!

    Hi Maddie..can i just say my kids love your show on cbeebies. My boy James loves watching your show its so nice to see a program that actually explains how things are desiged and work, and done so in a way that is appropriate to the age of the audience, without being condescending. Keep up the good work, its a refreshment for us all.

    I thought 'why do I recognise use this lady?'. Just realised my child watches you on TV!
    I haven't come across puffball yet but apprently, fry in butter until soft, let cool. Then dip in whisked egg, bread crumbs then back into the fining pan. Sounds great and look forward to trying it myself!

    The last giant puffball mushroom I saw was a bit bigger than that, but I have never actually eaten one, yet, although I have eaten the cap of a Parasol (Macrolepiota procera) mushroom once before which I fried and soaked in breadcrumbs, butter and a little black pepper which was good.
    I am always cautious when it comes to foraging for edible fungi (as you said to be cautious) after reading a story about a man who had picked edible ones for years and knew well which ones were fine to eat and were not, until one day he fed one to his son and he got sick and found out that he had not found one of the edible mushrooms he always looked for, but found a similar looking, mildly toxic one. His son recovered, but its ways its good to be careful.

    Love puff balls. Used to find them while camping. Best thing to do with them is cut them in half, hollow them out and use them as edible bowls. If you find one in good condition they taste really good raw.

    When I was a child I was told that these grow when people chuck Bread Crusts on the ground! I believed this till I was 9 years old when I told my teacher and she laughed.
    My father told me. I even tried growing one by stuffing bread crusts in my nans prize house plants for which I got into trouble! I was about 7 at the time and I stuffed crusts from 2 slices in her Coleus Plant Pots. :)

    • @iamjimgroth
      @iamjimgroth 10 лет назад +2

      It actually has a ton of very thin roots as well but those are severed when you pick it and are hard to see anyway. Mycelium I think they're called.

  • @MrStonespider
    @MrStonespider 10 лет назад +2

    I never wash mushrooms, they are like a sponge, if you wash them they fill with water instead of taking on the taste of garlic or herbs or whatever you fry them with. I usually just brush them thoroughly with a soft brush.

    • @MrStonespider
      @MrStonespider 10 лет назад

      Good point, a mushroom THAT size you could wash the outside without it penetrating too far I am sure. Most people aren't working with mushrooms that large.

    I ate part of one yesterday - sliced it lengthways into 1cm width pieces, rubbed it with garlic, sprinkled rosemary on it (I believe fresh sprigs would be better), doused it in lots of olive oil and fried it for 3 or 4 minutes per side - *delicious*!
    But it was too big! I had two large slices, each as big as a slice of (commercial) bread.
    I tried to make a soup out of the other 80% ... not great. The flesh remains like foam and is fairly bland.

    Very cool mushroom! BTW, it's best to dry fry the mushroom first in a hot dry frypan in order to remove a lot of it's moisture. This will improve the texture. Frying it in butter will definitely improve the taste. You might consider some fresh garlic too. I accidentally poisoned myself with some mushrooms I found growing in my yard. I had taken what I thought were Chanterelles to the president of the local mycology club to make sure they were true Chanterelles. Unfortunately they turned out to be False Chanterelles and caused me to have the WORST STOMACH ACHE I'VE EVER HAD IN MY LIFE! It was a very long and rough night. There aren't any mushrooms that look like Puffball Mushrooms which are fakes, so if you find a Puffball, just be sure to look for a nice, bright white flesh and that there are no worms inside. They can be cut like steaks and grilled on a barbeque as well!
