    I'm in the minority of people who like Kingdom Hearts more than Kingdom Hearts 2. While KH2 was indeed very fun gameplay-wise, the things I disliked about it were more numerous than the faults of the first game, the biggest point being the increasing ridiculousness of the story. The biggest strength KH1 has is that it is a simple and clean self-contained tale with hints of future developments, but hints subtle enough that it would not have mattered if more games hadn't followed.

    As a kh fan, my advice for newcomers is:
    For those who want the best emotional impact of 358/2 days,
    Play the original game. The gameplay is absolutely tedious, but it accidentally immerses you to the way working for organisation XIII feels like work to Roxas. And how it makes you like Axel and Xion the same way you do with workplace colleagues!(which makes the emotional gutpunches hurt even more:))
    Think of it like pathologic!(if you've heard/played that)

    This franchise being so ambitious, so unique, and such a wild and crazy “imagine if we did this” idea - could qualify it as a masterpiece of human thought process. The writing of the game itself is so messed up though. Midway through the game when you’re in hollow bastion Mickey just dumps all this information on you about ansem and in the same cutscene that organization member with the X on his face starts revealing their plans but it still doesn’t make any sense. It’s about 12 minutes of “oh this information and now this too and remember this? It’s because of this!” Damn man. I’ll play any and all titles this franchise produces. It’s special.
    But it’s bad.

    The Idea about kh2 is somewhat like this:
    1.it has enough content for players to be able to enjoy it
    2.it is not a filler, meaning it has a coherent enough story for players to not always wander what the hell is happening and doesnot really leave you in a chiffhanger
    3.The music is amazing
    4. Emotional buildup
    5. The worlds are not too big to traverse, so the second visits do not feel overwelming
    6. Great combat (for the time of release, at least, I would like to see a remastered version in UE4 regarding gameplay, not the graphics)

    My first kh game was kh2 and it is my favorite especially with the story about roxas and the organization. But i believe kh3 is superior in gamplay because of the combat diversity and non linear progression. The story lacks in kh3 but it makes sense since it was supposed to finish the dark seeker saga. I am also in the minority that loves the story and is not confused by it because in reality its just complex not confusing or non sense i think kh1's simple plot is underwhelming and feels like disney filler like kh2

    Great Video and well-articulated points. But I personally did not like KH2. Such a major disappointment. It was the first misstep in the series, and an omen that Kingdom Hearts would never be great again. No exploration, linear worlds, shallow combat, and a messy story. I am not adverse to change (I actually loved the GBA titles), but everything that I loved in KH1 had been stripped away without being replaced with elements of equal engagement, thus making the sequel a major downgrade.
    But what I will say about KH2 is that it was ambitious. KH2 was the only game where the visitable Disney worlds were in the double digits, and each one had to be visited twice. We had no idea how spoiled we were.

    • @sirspegy1390
      @sirspegy1390  4 месяца назад +1

      I see where you’re coming from (except for shallow combat), but I’m curious what makes linear worlds and shallow combat any different from KH1? In my eyes kingdom hearts 2 takes all those elements of KH1 (besides story) and greatly enhances them

    • @BobPeterson628
      @BobPeterson628 4 месяца назад +2

      @@sirspegy1390 I can see how you could view KH2 as a superior evolution of KH1 elements. But here is my perspective:
      So, for linear worlds, I could make this argument fairly easily in terms of level design. KH2 levels lack verticality, branching paths that circle back, puzzles, and intersecting/overlapping layouts. Like, in KH1, you could go from Room 1 to Room 2, then Room 2 to Room 3, and then Room 3 to Room 1. Every world has this except for the Olympus Coliseum. Meanwhile, in KH2, this can only be done in 4 of the 13 worlds (when not counting the Cavern of Remembrance), so less than a third. KH2 also removed the concept of falling into other rooms/areas, so there are no areas connected vertically. And that’s because platforming has been stripped away with most areas being hallways that do not demand much interaction from the player. There are not many interactive elements or secret areas, reinforced how the so-called perk of area maps will ultimately spoil the fun of exploration. Invisible wall artificially restrict movement and undermine the level immersion. You used to be able to fall in the Cave of Wonders and find yourself in a cool sub-area, but not anymore. Invisible walls prevent you from walking off the edge rather than there being some organic in-universe barrier.
      As for the combat, yes KH2 adds some nice dimensions, especially with how certain moves chain together in combos and such. But because the game also makes all the movement abilities optional and missable, combat encounters are not designed around those being an expected component in the player arsenal. Heck, the first release did not even have dodge roll, a critical option for evasive maneuvering. So a lot of encounters are designed so that they can be fought without evasive approaches, where charging ahead and mashing X pretty much always works. So the enemies are simplified to account for limited movement options, the dominant strategy can allow you to cheese the game, and the game generally asks less from the player.
      I also did not care for the combat arenas. The de-emphasis on platforming in the level design is also reflected in combat encounters. Most arenas are large flat areas walled off by invisible barriers. Long gone are the days of jumping onto the Bizarre Room’s table, or fighting Clayton on the cliffs, or chasing Jafar around as he circled onto platforms, or jumping up to Oogie Boogie to wail on him, or fencing with Riku across the Grand Hall, or any number of other examples I could cite. The closest thing that KH2 has to interestingly implemented platforming arenas/encounters is the Pete battle in Timeless River, the PotC boss battles, the Pride Lands Heartless boss, and maybe one or two Xemnas forms. And when the game does try to make combat arena interesting, it will do something like walling you off on a conveyor belt with invisible walls. Enough with the invisible walls. I miss fighting enemies on Hollow Bastion while trying to avoid falling off the castle’s ledge. Navigating the arena and making use of terrain or dynamic environmental elements used to be part of the series, but KH2 drops this almost completely.
      The pre-scripted reaction commands are cool in some ways, but I feel like they often strip control from the player for animated sequences. Plus the on-screen button prompt always takes me out of the world. And for that matter, anything with a gauge or those balls always takes me out of the game too.
      I also do not like how KH2 broke magic. I know that it did add a structure that encouraged wider use of offensive spells, which is all fine and dandy, but the time element added to the recharge system was disastrous. Truth be told, ever since KH added timed recharge bars to the combat, they incentivized some bad combat habits. The elegance of the system in KH1 is that magic was a static gauge, and you later got the ability to restore MP through battle by getting damage or inflicting damage. So it was the act of engaging in combat that restored your magic, with you chipping away at the enemy’s health while desperately trying to claw back enough MP for your healing or defensive spells or other offensive magic. It’s very risk/reward that makes you feel brave. But in KH2, I often found myself running away from the enemy until my MP bar refilled and I had another cure in the bank. I don’t feel like the brave Key Bearer when running and hiding in the corner until a meter fills up, but the MP system drives me to do so.
      That’s really the thrust of it. I don’t feel like a boy with a key weapon in KH2. With all the flashy moves, gravity defying aerial stuff, and fancy finishers, I am taken out of the game constantly. The worlds are shallow, the fights tend to be shallow, and the story is shallow. Sora just bumbles around aimlessly and cluelessly, making no real progress in the narrative until the very last level (aside from maybe two Organization killings prior to then). We can’t see the story through Sora’s eyes because the player knows so much more than he does, so we need to impatiently wait for him to get on the same page as us. It breaks the story. When Axel says that he just wanted to see Roxas again, this tragedy doesn’t even register for Sora because he still doesn’t even know who Roxas is.
      KH1, it felt like we were doing real damage of the villains’ operation as we took care each of their members and sealed the keyholes, while some victories were undermined by the villains snatching the princesses for their plan, so there was a push and pull to the conflict that tracked across all the worlds. But in KH2, you just kinda help out with whatever until a random beam of light shoots up from a random object to prod you to move forward. It feels so contrived and artificial.
      So yeah, KH2 feels like such a major downgrade compared to KH1. And some of the fancy bells and whistles actually end up getting in the way more than helping the experience. That’s kinda why I prefer the DS games. Those games actually have well-designed bosses, interesting battle arenas with light platforming elements, an emphasis on evasive maneuverability, and varied combat scenarios, and their slightly stripped down battle systems demonstrate why sometimes less is more.
      KH2 has a totally different design philosophy, and it just does not hold a candle to the design philosophy to KH1. At least in my opinion.

      @@BobPeterson628 I suppose most of my enjoyment of KH2’s worlds come from the beautiful environments and the music, and I do see what you’re saying in terms of verticality, like in Monstro for example. There’s nothing like Monstro in KH2. However, I think the design of Monstro and other worlds like it ultimately aren’t very fun, because spitting me back out into a samey looking room that is technically above or below another samey looking room does nothing for me. I think what KH2 ultimately adds is more spectacle, and in a beautiful game, I’ll take that over almost anything. Take Christmas Town for example: very basic layout, like you said, it’s basically just a couple of empty halls, but damn man it looks absolutely gorgeous and has some incredible music. I don’t think something like Monstro comes close to that kind of beauty and spectacle, and for some people, that’s worse, but I love it.

    • @sirspegy1390
      @sirspegy1390  4 месяца назад +1

      @@BobPeterson628 I also see what you’re saying about combat, but I have to disagree. For one, critical mode is always an option if the game isn’t challenging enough, and for two, the post game content is more than challenging enough. I also don’t think many abilities in KH2 are missable, at least if you’re paying attention. Sure, you can’t use everything but that’s more of a testament to how well you can tailor the game to your own personal play style. I also don’t think the combat needs to be immersive, in the sense that you want to feel like a little kid holding a giant sword. Sora’s grown up since KH1, and even if he hadn’t, it’s a Disney RPG, I don’t personally need it to be extremely realistic. The combat arenas are definitely worse in KH2, I’ll definitely agree with you there.

    In terms of story kingdom hearts 1 is the best, in terms of gameplay kingdom hearts 2 is the best in my opinion. I dont think kingdom hearts 2 is a masterpiece, I do believe kingdom hearts 2 final mix + is a masterpiece. The regular american version we first got had a terrible introduction, i liked it the first time around, but replaying it sucked, and there was no endgame in kingdom hearts 2. Once you beat seph and grind out the ultimate keyblade and drive forms etc there's nothing else to do, and all the games are too easy without critical mode. People complain about how complicated the story became once kingdom hearts 2 came out and that makes me laugh, the story does not get confusing until some later games lol and even then when you really pay attention and learn it as the games continue to release it is some of the greatest gaming stories in history its actually insane how normua had this crazy grand story laid out since at least the 2nd game/chain of memories. Kingdom hearts series is my favorite game of all time and thats my opinions on kingdom hearts 1, 2 and the final mix
