Sometimes, I know exactly why my views are down, and sometimes it’s not so obvious. But every time it happens, I’m looking for a strategy to help get my videos back on the home page, and in front of my subscribers again. In December, I created a strategy to revive my channel - and in January, I saw the results: my views doubled. Today I'm sharing the full behind-the-scenes look at exactly how I did that, and how I'm continuing to improve my RUclips growth strategy.
And welcome to #BehindtheScreens my new series where I share a raw and real look at my personal current growth strategies and how they are actually working, in real time. (Plus, take you along for a day in my life while I do that!)

I really like the idea of this series-"here's what I tried, here's what worked & what didn't" plus the little vlog style breaks (getting coffee, etc) it strikes a nice balance of personal and informative and gives us a reason to come back and check in more than the videos in the past that have been more informational only.
i recently started posting a litttttle bit consistently to youtube with my paltry 150 subscribers, the numbers are so discouraging but I'm trying to not let the negative self talk win :)

It’ll be interesting to see what your metrics are for February. I’m in HR and I find people are job searching like mad in December and January. It makes me think videos about becoming a content creator would do better in those months too because people are looking to get out of their current job and find an alternative career path. Not discounting all your effort, just wanted to toss in another factor that may go into it. I kind of stumbled onto the fact that the shorts and long form videos are different audiences from the mere fact that shorts tend to get disproportionately more dislikes than long form (at least for me lol). I was going to toss in the generic “love your channel” ending sentence but I do genuinely like the style of your content. Way more laid back and less intense than some RUclipsrs who seem like they’re yelling at the screen lol. Here’s to a record breaking 2024! ❤

    • @katie
      @katie  3 месяца назад +9

I totally agree that could be a factor too! over the years I've noticed January tends to be my best time of year, and I think it's because that's when a lot of people consider starting content creation. that being said, this january is a lot better than last january, so I'm happy with that!! and thank you so much (I personally am also not a fan of 'yelling at the screen' youtubers lol so I'm glad that comes across in my content) 🤗

As a consistent returning viewer, been watching your videos for over a year, I would say there are a few reasons I comeback! The first reason is the information you provide is valuable. I think you're take on social media and content strategy and especially your recent video about changing your niche is extremely helpful. I became a permanent returning viewer when you started sharing your van life travels and how you are able to work on the go. I really like this content you're making now where you share information while you're out and about. You're a bad ass businesswoman who is able to work from anywhere and you look like you really enjoy what you're doing! I hope this helps your analytics analysis!

Returning newer viewer - I came back because the 1-2 videos that I watched first ("If I started from scratch as a creator..." and the referenced "If I started a RUclips channel in 2023") were so packed with clear, practical action steps. There wasn't a lot of generic, abstract advice. I felt your videos really gave great value for the time spent. Your videos make me reach for something to take notes.

Hey Katie, I recently found your channel from the 'don't niche down' video - as I had just committed RUclips suicide on my own channel. I've been making vanlife videos on my channel for the past three years and then in Jan 2024 - completely switched to making content I really wanted to make which was focussed on massage, minimalism, reiki and holistic health. AND IT'S BEEN BOMBING! so after watching you're INCREDIBLE video, I re-started my old channel and am currently switching all my content over to that instead. I'm now re-focussed on the vanlife content AND the spiritual channel being two separate enterprises. I was drawn to your videos because I loved that I could connect with you, we seemed to have a lot in common and what you said made so much sense and resonated with what I have been coming to the conclusion of over the years. ALSO if we'd met in person, you'd instantly be a person I'd love to make into a close friend. So I thank you that even though I can't meet you in person (I'm in the UK), I now have an inspirational woman who speaks to my creativity and has so much positive advice that I can implement into my channels growth going forwards. Thank you so much Katie xx

I def agree, your thumbnail style is great, and I love how it's consistently the same. I also think what you said about having the b-roll with the captions in the beginning of your videos is SO smart! I often scroll over video thumbnails to see the video preview, so this makes total sense. Great content, as always, Katie! Love seeing your growth these past few years!

Hey Katie! I'm a returning viewer. Don't you worry, babe. My viewstyle is very changeable. Sometimes I'm into personal development, then in SEO, then in arts and crafts and i binge a lot of the same types of videos. It goes in waves. You can say I'm a serial ecclectic viewer. And i guess other people are like that aswell, as long as our videos are searchable, they will be seen by the right people. DETACH and you will ATTRACT. you're doing great, love the vlogstyle and your tone of voice btw. 💖✨️

I think this is so interesting. As a viewer, I saw your videos recommended all the time, then they weren't, and now they are again. I know it's not exactly what you want to hear in the sense that I'm not actively searching for your videos, but it really says a lot about how RUclips's algorithm is truly the difference maker for your success. I will say this, had RUclips recommended your videos, I would have clicked! 🙂

I think I came across your "Don't Niche Down" video just thanks to the algorithm. Then TBH I think I subscribed on that first video because you remind me of my middle niece (talk about an X factor!) BUT I came back because of your content--the combination of your knowledge and your travel footage. I'd say the instinct to mix your lifestyle content with technical content is a good one. And to viewers out there wanting to support specific creators: please play folks' videos all the way through--it matters to the algorithm.

Even if they are reiterating some of the same tips you keep it fresh with new angles. I watch your vids on my way to work and I use it as motivation and almost as a mantra to subconsciously drill these tips into my head so they come as second nature while I’m creating and as a motivator to get home from my 9-5 and dial in to working on my channel. I just recently discovered your channel and now binge watch! I like that your topic is always content creation, but you present it in so many various ways that it keeps it interesting. Plus, you give so much valuable information!!

I enjoyed this style. I think it works because there was so much useful and valuable info on the topic. I really appreciate hearing your questioning and analysis thought process regardingthe YT analytics. Having the locale in the background was interesting, too. I love that you used it as a pattern interrupt and stayed on topic. What I dislike about many vlogs is that they often jump from topic to topic, and there's no cohesion. But mainly, I really appreciate your deep dives into your practice and thought processes. Thanks again, Katie!

100% keep watching every video of yours I see pop up *because* you integrate a "vlog-style" production into what in general people would consider "educational" content. You aren't the first creator I've seen do it, but it's been years and years since I've seen someone pull it off this well. Girl, you already are in your lane - believe it! 💕

I love your videos, I find them so inspiring and I'm always amazed by the fast that you always find something else to teach us even if you have been posting for a long time and speak about the same topics (I don't mean this as negative but as positive, like, that you always speak about things that we're interested in!). I love this style of videos, and actually, there are many videos that I watch while I do something else, but yours are so nice that I actually want to WATCH them and not only hear you speak

I've been following your channel for maybe 18 months now, after you popped up on my home feed at some point. When you show up, I watch! By far the best "how to youtube" youtuber there is because you are so natural and laid back, while being strategic and analytical about it all. I can't wait to see you smash these goals!
My goals for Q1 have been to swat mosquitos (see the channel by Struthless, and vid 'how to unf*** your life) and then launch my project in Q2. On the fence about using YT to keep a vlog of my build in public journey as I launch a business/project.

Thank you for your transparency and sharing your journey!

This was very enjoyable to watch, thank you! One slight suggestion: Walking and talking on camera is hard for vlog style content and too much shake will drive people away. 1 in 3 people get motion sickness from watching shaky footage, so that's quite a big chunk of the audience who will click away if you have long sections of shaky footage like this in your video. GoPros are ridiculously good at this and even an old Hero 7 would work to get better walking + talking footage. The gold standard is of course a gimbal + big mirrorless a la Jabiertzo's channel? He walks and talks a lot (in Spanish) and I can watch his footage without getting sea sick. With yours I had to half close the lid on my laptop to keep listening and that's probably not what you intended 😅

I discovered your channel last year and dipped in and out depending on the topic, I now tend to watch more of them BECAUSE of the vlog content. It feels like there's more of a storyline behind all the individual topics. Almost as though the vlogging is the washing line and all the topics hang off it (it makes sense in my head, I swear!).
My key takeaway from this video that will help with my own is that I currently keep my vlogs in a separate playlist, away from the more topic/advice videos. I'm now going to experiment with blending them together a little more, in the way you have here.
Thanks so much for your work!

I subbed to your channel after seeing your Don't Niche Down video. I really like this style of video, keep it going 😉
I am currently struggling with my channel. I am experimenting to see what will work better. I know I need to work on Thumbnails and Titles, those are such a struggle for me. My content lines up with others' content in my niche, but I want to change my style. Like you, I love to watch vlog-style info vids, not tutorials. I currently do tutorials, but I am so bored and I think it's lacking the personal aspect. I'll probably mix it up a bit to see what works best.
Thank you for sharing your insights.

I found you last month on my YT homepage and (subscribed!) and have been returning ever since. I appreciate how you break down YT creator content information and explain how it all works. Thank you! 😊 also, I love how you speak to the camera. I’m a relatively new channel (started in December). I have 59 subscribers and about 3500 views. I’m pretty pleased with that as I thought only my family and friends would watch! 😊

I came in new and scared. I hope this doesn’t come off wrong please know I am just being honest about why I subscribed, you are so confident in yourself. I thought I was too big or ugly because I don’t wear make-up to start my channel. But you as a curvy woman with minimal makeup up made me feel like I could work on my self-esteem. I see your huge following and you don’t wear a bunch of makeup and you always look comfortable in clothes I would wear. I hope this didn’t come off wrong I’m saying thank you for your confidence in yourself and it shows me I can be in myself as well and don’t have to have to own half of Ulta hahaha. Thank you.
