If You're So Smart... Tell Stew Mac What You Think Of This Tool

- Several years ago, I had a custom tool made for me that makes one of my least favorite inlay tasks easy as pie. I even made a video about it and still get questions from viewers wanting to buy one. I always thought that Stew Mac should sell them since they have lots more juice than I do when it comes to guitar building tools.
I have been talking with Erick at Stew Mac and am getting ready to send him a prototype. Since I don’t live close to Ohio this video will serve as a way to help the people in product development get an idea of the market for my idea. With your help we can generate a little buzz and… who knows? Maybe, one day, you will see something like this in the pages of the worlds largest collection of guitar building tools.
Many thanks for the inspiration should go to Rick Maguire, the first time I ever saw something like this to make inlay easy...rickmaguireguit...

Great prototype Matt. I’d buy one of these in a heartbeat. It’s 2022 though, and we’re all still waiting for this to hit the Stewmac site, so I guess they’re too busy selling their ever expanding clothing and coffee mug range these days
Like you say Matt its a "no brainer" any tool that makes our working day easier, with less think time that aids confidence with efficiency,, and also gives you back your weekend !! Its a winner at my house mate, speaks for itself with volumes. Best of luck fellas. Cool video and cool surf tunes - nice combination homes👍
Thanks for watching my friend, lets hope Stewmac picks up the ball and runs with it

What an outstanding bit of kit. It looks very easy to use.
It's a snap Symon, I hope StewMac can come up with something to make this bummer job a little easier
Wow Matt that makes the inlay super easy for the diy guys.
I am all about making building guitars easy my friend
That's a great idea! I'd definitely buy one. StewMac should jump on this.
Thanks Russell

Quite a few people making similar templates, but a nice packaged little system is a cool idea. You could probably Texas toast them and use as promotional swag lol
Oh man, I don't have the sway to build these and stock them
great idea, I think stew mac should just listen...good idea, makes sense, solves problems, etc....
We will see what they have to say
very cool idea! I see potential for all kinds of marker templates. Very smart using the oversize template and built in guide for the mini router bit. I'd buy that for my Dremel. You guys RAWK!
Thanks for watching Bob, it is a really helpful little set-up. I can't remember who I stole it from but I know I saw it somewhere.
@@TexasToastGuitars , maybe, but y'all made it it "Stewmac Customer friendly"...that's the key...it already looks like more than just a prototype.
That’s awesome Matt, I’d buy that in a heartbeat and twice on Sunday! I want one now!
I like it too, I'm going to give it a shot and see if I can convince them to offer it
I need that, now.
Probably just me, but I think trapazoid inlay fretboards should include the first fret marker as well. I think it just looks "finished".
I always liked the idea of trapezoids that didn't get wider as they went down the freboard too. I know why they did it but I still think it would be cool
That's actually a really cool idea! Run with that!😆

It’s a no brainier Matt. That is a fantastic idea and they’re mad if they don’t take it up.
Thanks Wayne, I hear there might be some forward movement on this

Great idea. What a time saver as well as a great way to keep everything even and straight.
Great job Matt,
Jeff Fuerst
Glad you liked it Jeff,
I still haven't heard from Stewmac on this tool?
They still have my prototypes
Hey Matt…. that looks way easier than doing it freehand !!!! You're 100% right about being able to have multiple templates that work with the same base….. blocks, split diamonds, parallelograms ….. even simple dots could work … I'd buy one for sure. if Stewmac doesn't pick them up you should definitely sell them through the Texas Toast website…..seriously … I'm ready to order !!!!
Hey StewMac, over 400 thumbs up on this video. Looks like people are interested this product. If StewMac doesn't pick it up, then you are correct Sir - NO-brain-er! I want one and why stop with just Gibson? They could sell them for all types of inlays and attract all kinds of new business. Not to mention spin off sales for inlays, Dremel tools, bits, router bases, clamps, files, chisels, fret boards, radius files, and CA... The list goes on and on. Heck, if they don't take it up, buy a CNC machine, make them yourself and sell them to builders and supply re-salers and on Reverb and Amazon. I know I want one and StewMac gets a lot of money. Bet they would be happy to take some more. .Love your videos, keep'm coming.
I'm going to reach out to StewMac today
This was an instant subscription, facebook page lookup and the whole nine yards... I see some cool awesome stuff in the background. I wish I had a shop and skill like that. Cheers from México! Keep it up and thanks!!!
Awesome! Thank you my friend

Matt that’s GENIUS!!👏👏👏
I think you might see something from Stewmac one day
I still want one of these Matt.. if you do ever make a run of these to sell, count me in
I hear that StewMac is still going to do one someday... I absolutely have no interest in manufacturing, inventory shipping etc
As always, brilliant. Stew Mac needs to make and sell this!! Great work Matt.

Great time saver and takes the headache work out of routing inlays. Good job Matt.
Thanks for watching Scott, I can tell you and I have both experienced the pain of doing trapezoid inlays. This makes it almost fun
@@TexasToastGuitars People that haven't done this work don't realize that the large straight sided inlays are more of a pain in the ass because ,as you stated , one flaw or one inlay that's not perfectly aligned is going to stick out and draw your eye right to it. I hope Stew mac picks up your design and can sell it at a reasonable price or if not , maybe you could find a company to produce them for you so you could sell them reasonably and still make some money. Either way , I'm definitely interested in getting one. Maybe even a two pack for Gibson and fender scale with also for the first fret inlay rout. I'd love to use it on one of my Strat style guitars, bet that would look cool. Keep us viewers informed on the progress. Love the work you guys do !

Looks good to me! I would definitely use this for Gibson style inlay.
Still haven't heard anything from they guys at Stewmac, I think the COVID threw a wrench in some gears

Great new tool for Guitar Luthiers everywhere
Thanks for watching Richard, I hope Stewmac picks up this ball and runs with it.
Hey Stewmac, just make our lives easier. Inlaying is a pain, but you could make it quicker and easier, indeed a no-brainer.
Thanks for watching Paul, hopefully StewMac will see if there is enough interest
Yes! As you eluded to (I think), also provide additional shapes and fretboard scales. As another commenter suggested, include the first fret as well ... leave it up to the luthier to include it or not. Even providing just the router base would be great, along with fretboard length template blanks so we can make our own. Great idea!! If StewMac passes, and you can find someone to manufacture for you, I'd be a happy buyer!
We'll see what we can come up with.
Many thanks to the inspiration Rick Maguire... www.thegearpage.net/board/index.php?threads%2Fcalling-out-to-buildersfavorite-jigs-templates-tips-techniques.400718%2Fpage-7&fbclid=IwAR2w5NI5rxQeWjUrJ4jjrTl0zmccXt7VT1Gka8XFGvAcneBlaHEwoahy20o
I haven't looked though all of StewMac's tool line, but I would have thought that something like this, along with all the other popular inlay types, would have already existed. So yeah, a no-brainer.
Thanks Remy, lets hope they run with this idea
Very Nice idea and I guess if you have the inclination to do so you could go bonkers if you had access to a CNC router to cut new templates for the router base (or StewMac could make them) You could even use the template to cut the inlay material with a smaller template collar in the base or a template with (twice the collar thickness) slightly bigger cutouts
Of course, if you had access to a CNC you could just have it cut your inlay... I hear you though.
We have made a jig for my beloved pin router that does this same thing, the only downside is you have to have a pin router to use it. This is a handy tool for the small shop or the guy who is making his own Les Paul style guitar. I know I say something like this and stole the idea because I wished I could buy one.
I know this is an older video, and will continue to do some research, but you could easily have that scanned into a PDF document that you can sell as a download on your website. The customer could then easily print it out and make our own templates off that. Minimal work for you, we get an awesome handmade jig of our own, may not be a “Million Dollar” idea, but something that you could clearly sell a lot of. My two sense anyways. Hope to see you guys in the next year or so for one of your classes!!
This jig is a no brainer, anyone doing production work would love this. How about a jig for side dots?
I know there are some guys making and selling those.
Thanks for watching Jay
I hope they give you a cut on each one sold ;-) Great idea mijo !
I'd do it for free tools hahaha

Wouldn't you just be the vendor? Unless you want StewMac to manufacture them as well.
Man it'd be so awesome if they start making those! I really like inlays and I'm getting into kit building as a hobby, but the idea of free handing the carving is REALLY intimidating. The router template is a genius idea, id actually feel comfortable attempting inlay work with this setup!
I am not a fan of inlay work. I used to be when my eyes were younger but these days I need all the help I can get
@@TexasToastGuitars No arguments here, I just hit 30, which I know isn't "old" but I still have to triple check 8ths and 16ths on the tape measure to make sure my eyes aren't tricking me lol. This prototype is such miracle idea, it helps everyone. Whether you're young and sloppy or old and the eyes aren't as sharp, literally everyone could use the extra consistency and accuracy from this tool. It even sells another tool Stew-Mac already offers. Its a Win/win/win for all parties if you ask me! If I get a kit and this tool one day, id be more that happy to shoot a video of it in action, just to show well it works, even for the hobbyist who is scared of inlays.
@@andrewdimartino7426 I can't read the ruler without my danger glasses
@@TexasToastGuitars you get dangerously awesome after you put them on though! Nothing trumps skill, except maybe the good ole pin router ;)
Great idea and adding 12th fret designs will make it great for us home builders!
That was kinda my idea. For guys with a CNC this won't hold any allure but for the guy with a small shop looking for easy results it should be marketable

Hey, I'd love to get that jig from you guys myself!! I'll go and visit your website and see if it's available.
I like it! I'd buy this, it will cut the time to do inlays dramatically. I would buy templates for 24.75 & 25.5 fretboards for dots and trapezoids. I'm sure Stew Mac will be receptive to this. Good Luck!
Thanks for watching Fred. I'm hoping StewMac will start offering these, they make life really easy
Great gadget Mat cheers
Thanks for watching kev, it's a slick little set-up.
Like the idea , the product ,and many more inlayproducts ,prs birds and much more , verry good idea ,for Stew Mac a simple extra tool
There are certainly lots of options. This is one of the reasons I do not have any interest in selling these myself. Lets hope Stewmac picks up the ball and runs with it
Great sales pitch, Matt. I'd buy one because I've always liked the trapezoids better than the rectangles. (I't just a matter of time before some asks for the PRS birds.)
HAHAHA no thanks on making the PRS birds jig my friend. I think even I would have to set up to a CNC for those things

cool idea! And like you said, it could be expanded upon. Fender dots. Gretsch thumbs, shark fins, all kinds of cool inlays used throughout the industry.
Thanks for watching my friend. Lets hope that the good folks at Stewmac pick up the ball and run with it
Yes please, I build a lot of guitars with traps and would really appreciate and use the heck out of that setup. Not to mention I own every other StewMac tool so of coarse I would have to get a couple of these as well. Having one for the shorter, vintage scale length like for 59's would be great not to mention a custom block inlay version would be great too. Great job on the design Matt.
Thanks for watching brotherman, I think this could be a good thing for them to at least give a shot
What a cool idea! I could see them making one for for all the scale lengths. It would be dumb not to include in their catalog
See... Ian gets it!
Absolutely brilliant Matt !!! Well done !! I'd buy that . Maybe make a template to make Celtic Crosses !? That's be wwaaayyy Kool !!!!

This is so good that I can't believe StewMac doesn't carry it already. So many applications, too. Basically, any template for fine work could benefit from the smaller-diameter bit and the lighter Dremel.
Thanks for watching amigo, I think the hot set up is making it work with lots of existing Stewmac products. I'm going to see if I can generate some market for them to take advantage of.
@@TexasToastGuitars Yes, that would be the bomb. As for the fretboards, I suppose the alternative (i.e., the one they show on the Trade Secrets videos) is to freehand the rout against a chalk outline and follow up with a chisel. No thank you ... I sneeze too much.

What about notches in the contact surface to align the template with the board perpendicular to the center line with some Teflon fret dam in the cut slots
All good ideas Caleb, thanks for watching
Woah! This is what I really, really want! Except in 25” scale!!! Please StewMac, puh-lease!
Working on a new idea for this kinda thing
I don't do trapezoid inlays specifically, but doing any inlays with this would make life so much easier. They would be perfectly positioned on the board, and consistently shaped (no filler around inlays is always a bonus!)
Hi Lloyd you know how I roll... no inlays is where it's at! hahaha
I know I'm in the minority here though.
@@TexasToastGuitars I dig dots, preferably wood ones. But a clean fretboard is a necessity if you have a nice piece to work with. You go out of your way to pick a nice piece, no point in drilling holes in it!
Not to mention people who look at the fretboard to play freak me out, so if you need face dots, you're REALLY scary to me.
This is excellent. Hope StewMac goes for this. I'd also like to see other inlay options as well.

I think this is a really solid idea. My worry would be if the inlays are not consistent. Stews are prolly machine cut but if they change vendors the fit could be right out the door.
Good point QC is important for this rig to work. I have had great luck with the precut inlays from Stewmac so far.
Yeah that looks like the kind of thing I'd be interested in. Nicely made, though why you don't have a bunch made by your engineering shop of choice and sell them yourselves I can't figure. Stew Mac don't need any more money.
It costs more money that I am willing to spend to produce, market, sell, ship and keep guitar making tools in inventory.

Texas Toast Guitars only my whole life. I really hope they run with this idea. It would make my life so much easier.
Do it Stew it! 👍
Nice! Thanks for watching my friend
What size router bit is that designed for? It looks like a fairly small one, less than 1/16", and that's a lot of wood to hog out. I could see recommending using a 1/8" bit first to get out most of the material before using the small bit to hit the outlines and do the finishing cut. That could save snapping a bit or three.
1/16 bit the bushing could be swapped out for a larger bit but then it adds cost and complexity. If I can go slow and, and I did, it can be done.
Great Idea, utilizing existing tools, easy to produce and long lasting.
I'd buy it if it's exactly made like the one shown here.
Lets hope they are interested. I wanted this to be easy to make and use affordable materials. So... lets think positive

Thanks for watching Christian

See... Mike gets it!
Thanks Mike
I NEED IT
Thanks for watching my friend.
What a brilliant idea. M
We'll see if the good people at StewMac offer this some day
Okay great video and idea! I didn't even make a stupid comment wow!
C'mon man, don't go changin' to try and please me.
I would buy it.
Lets hope they start selling them Space Groyper
This is really kickass. I'd buy it right now if it were available. I have a stainless steel version of this jig, but the traps/blocks are actual size and its specific to the 59 fret spacing.
Thanks for watching amigo. I have something like that as well. It does work well but I think this little set-up is better?
@@TexasToastGuitars yours is way better no doubt.
This is a great idea! Good luck TTG!👍👌✌

A very useful tool! Hope StewMac will pick it up! I need to get one of those bases soon anyway.
I hear good things about the new plunge version Jeff
I would buy one
Thanks Gary
They should let y'all do the demo video if they do pick this up! Matt's dream come true (snicker) he could talk and talk and talk.
yep I love the sound of my own voice
@@TexasToastGuitars yes, but how else are we gonna get great tips and tricks, Matt?
I hear that Crimson Guitars is really good
@@TexasToastGuitars now you're trying to get rid of me?... J/K....Ben has cool info, but he does a lot of old school carving, and things by hand for his videos. I think most of his shows are more specialty builds/repairs and not so much every day workings of a custom shop (except his "what's on the bench" fridays).
I want one! If StewMac doesn’t start selling this, I hope that you will.
Thanks for watching vandahm, I don't think I can compete with the guys at StewMac they have the juice.
We'll see what we can get going though. BTW the inspiration for that tool cam from Rick Maguire... rickmaguireguitars.com/shop-tour/shop-tour-ii/
Slick tools! Love that background surf music. Who was that?
Thanks Lee, that is the one and only Chris Fesker… you might know him from the videos as he is also the paint guru here at Texas Toast
@@TexasToastGuitars Nice. Does that Band have a YT page?
I'm old enough to recognise the Shadows influence in there. Nice take on an old theme I'm sure Hank would approve 👍🏼 By the way the stuff you design and build you don't need Stewmac just sell them in your shop, that's a real cool tool!@@TexasToastGuitars
Chris is a big Hank Marvin fan
I don't think thy do
All I can see is the back of your hand. Great shot.
I'm sorry you didn't like my video Dave
This is great , I’d buy it for sure
Thanks for watching Steve hopefully they will take our advice
Texas Toast Guitars your welcome, I enjoy your videos , hopefully they will cause I would love to have the whole set up
Matt, awesome jig! Stewart MacDonald please make ASAP; I will buy purchase it.
Brett gets it... I'll bet we can generate a little buzz over at Stewmac

So sweet!~ How much do you sell these for? With the router jig base attachment also.
We do not sell these... This was a video to try and see if we could get StewMac to produce and sell them. I am not the inventor, designer or fabricator
@@TexasToastGuitars Oh ok.
Yes please I’ll take one 👍👍
Thanks Tony
do you know if steve at maximum guitar works is making those templates
Different templates for different scale lengths!
Absolutely, of course, you could move it around on scale lengths that are not 24.75 but I'm with you... the fewer times you attach this thing the better
Genius
Thanks, still waiting to see if StewMac is going to do this
