Lol he is one of few others sound like they are trying to blend both genres, and it just doesn't sound right. However I do like the merger of classical & gospel along with classical & jazz. When done correctly they are a beautiful match.
Impressive as hell! Good singing and technical understanding of Vocal Production in my opinion is the key for crossover singing. Nailed Brian McKnight!!!
I´ve discovered that if you sing in the mixed nasal voice (like Jenifer Hudson for example) you get more volume than if you´re singing with apoggio. I was trained as a baritone in opera technique and when I tried to sing R&B or any kind of pop music it was very difficult because my classical teachers told me that "the higher you go, the more you support" and I´m only able to hit an A# with that technique, I had a Speech Level Singing (and other contemporary techniques) teacher last year and she really helped me with the mixed voice and now when I sing pop I can use a fake full voice (it really sounds like is chest voice) from high G to high C# without pressing my abdomen, above high C# it sounds completely like head voice but that´s ok. I´m still learning these new techniques but I SWEAR that is something really different and I loooove it. The hard part has been learning this new technique (that totally goes against classical technique) without losing my classical placement when I sing arias. Oh, God, I´d love to have a conversation with you someday about these topics I´m really passionate about. Sorry if something is not clear because of my bad Mexican English Lol
Lucas, I'm a gigging singer of Oldies, Motown, and Classic Rock. This was very beneficial. I've got Boston, Foreigner, Sam & Dave, Jackie Wilson, Gary Puckett, Kansas, Tom Jones and others to cover. They're not Opera, but boy they are tough. Thanks for this.
COME ON, agility, flexibility, brightness, warmth, and passionate expressivity! 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾 Also, 6:23 to the end was brilliant. 😆🙌🏾 You are incredibly gifted. Thank you for sharing!
I think you did a very nice rendition. I’m trained classically as well, and I love many kinds of music. I really don’t like blues or jazz, but I’m pretty easy to please with most music, especially if I connect to it emotionally. I think the singers today, especially Female vocalists like Mariah Carey, Beyoncé, Rihanna, Adele, and many others, learn to sing in a very different way. I think in the future they will have their own classification. Even going to a Broadway show like Hamilton, singing the songs that are melodic, aside from rap, take a very nuanced voice. In some cases the voices are very harsh, like the voice of Angelica in Hamilton. The voice chosen for Eliza has a softer, more melodic character. But Angelica, as a character is a “woman who is never satisfied“. The brassier voice works for her. I would love your viewers to comment on the training done by singers that choose pop music over classical music. Thank you very much. I am going to look at your other videos now. ❤
He also can try some metal in a concert and after that he can take on a microphone singer Dimash attempt. Why not some growl in concert. Some can do both quite well, live, rock and opera ruclips.net/video/yv6jiqVmmSI/видео.html.
This STUPID GOOD, my dude! It’s not just tone but the whole understanding of sensibility 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 This is a masterclass in classical to commercial crossover ❤️
I was trained in old school musical theatre and classical as a kid and teenager. As an adult, it's been SO EXTREMELY difficult to sing pop and R&B. My body is always ready to project and support that I lose that agility. This video has been enlightening. THANK YOU.
I think the biggest difference is that for opera you need a bigger range also the phrases in opera are long and you need to be able sustain ligero or line over huge long phrases ...but with r &b ...the phrases are much shorter and if there is a long phrase ..there is only one ...and mike ..and you don't have to deal with an orchestra so the diaphragm is important ... you did so SO SO SO GOOD!
If the late great Aretha Franklin can sing Nessun Dorma (I thought it was great, though the "purists" don't agree with me), then Lucas can sing R&B all he wants.
YOU ARE A GREAT SINGER AND A GREAT ARTIST. I AM MUSICIAN AND SINGER TOO AND I CAN TELL THAT YOU CAN SING ANY SONG AND EVERYBODY IN THE WORLD WILL LOVE. HUGS FROM BRAZIL. TAKE SOME SONGS AND SING TO US.
As one of the Take 6 guys who went the OTHER way (I did Omar last Summer/LA Opera) Major props!!! Keep going brother...boldly go where no man has gone before...lol.
So funny that we have the same story too. I'm also trained opera singer with spinto tenor voice but I'm also sing rnb, blues and jazz. You have a nice rnb voice too btw👍🏼🥂
I am here because I have my final year recital coming up soon, and I'm a pop singer, and now I am expected to sing opera. Heck! It's not been easy. You're absolutely right on the differences between R&B vs Opera singing. Absolutely 💯💯💯. Because I have observed the difference as well during practice. Thank you so much for this video.😂😂 meanwhile, you sound great
Dude...I'm now U'r BIGGEST FAN!!!👍 We're the same! I'm an R&B Singer by nature & discovered I could sing Opera later in life😃 Anyways, after watchin' just 1 of Ur performances, I knew U were darn good!👌 So, I wanted 2 C more & I just finished watchin' Ur "La Esperanza" attempt video...U'r so unlike the many snobby opera singers I've crossed paths with in both L A & N Y !🙂 U definitely know what U'r talkin' about in these videos👍 I'm showin' Ur videos to every1 tellin' 'em this guy's the man!😊
Three years ago, I graduated highschool and went straight for musicology in university in France. At that time, I wanted to be the next Chris Brown/K-Pop singer/beatmaker, I was pretty much bathing in Trap-infused R&B. I had very few vocal training before university, though I won't be learning playing or singing technique there. I first wanted to just learn classical technique after having sung Carmen in choir, but all I knew were heavy verismo stuffs and difficult XIXth c. bel canto that did not please me naturally. After having been introduced to French baroque and the « high Tenor » repertoire, I ditched FLStudio and all of these raunchy Hip-Hop tunes to read unknown scores of Lully, Campra. As of today, I have sung and listened to a decent amount of western « classical » music: Gastoldi, Marenzio (ugh... overdone), Vivaldi, Galuppi, Méhul, Grétry, Carissimi, pre-Rameau french baroque, Notre-Dame repertoire, &c... I'm so happy since for the first time I know what I am doing and have a clear direction of where I'm heading for. This year, I have finally managed to get into a parisian conservatoire. Sad that COVID hinders every learning experience (I still have university and I also study lute and cembalo). As for singing technique, I still get remarked for singing in the style of « variété » when I sing things like Ariosti or having shallow breath support and a sound that is too « opened », no doubt coming from all the R&B/rap that I did in the past.
Bro your a beast. So much mad respect. You still got it and should redevelop it. I’ve been working on my cross over technique a lot for the past few years it’s definitely hard
You sound amazing no matter what you sing! Got to hear your Wolfram last week- SPECTACULAR! I am a huge fan of yours and am a former student of Marlena too! Thanks for the great content!
You are a beautiful person and soul. Your charisma is through the roof. Also, a great baritone. Your assessment of the two different styles, is right on point. You really need to come from a falsetto controlled full voice, to do R&B like Luther Vandross, who could expand his full voice using the falsetto as his motor drive and control mechanism. Opera, over builds the lower register muscle making it more like a bench pressers musculature as apposed to a gymnast who builds refined control strength. Enjoyed your openness and energy and have watched a few of your videos. (Subscribed) Looking forward to watching more.
As a gospel/rnb singer….it warms my heart to hear an opera singer appreciate my type of music. Interestingly enough, I’m a tenor who’s interested In singing opera. I sang in professional choirs in my teens and my twenties but now at 36, switching gears into opera is a little difficult. It’s most definitely the breath support. For me, it also singing high notes forte. I can sing all the way up to the tenor high f and a little beyond…but right around b flat/b natural, I have to sing mezza forte or piano. I have the higher notes but sometimes it hard to sing forte. Any suggestions? Btw, I’ve subscribed!!!
in rock singing, you need to tighten your vocal production to produce that bright and raspy sound. Some rock singers even have nodules because of over-tightening in the throat, though having nodules in rock singing adds character to the voice. While in Opera, you would need to eliminate that tightness in your throat so that your voice will be bigger and more powerful and free.
Fantastic Lucas! Hey man, if the the opera houses don't open soon, you get your bad ass on the Love Train to the R&B Revolution!!!! And while your taking requests, here are two. A little bit of a combo of R&B and classical vocal style. Let's have your take on two iconic Jackie Wilson tracks: "Lonely Teardrops" and "Night". Hint; "Night" use the melody from "Mon cœur s'ouvre à ta voix" (from Samson et Dalila). Lay it on us brother!!!!!
Wow! Love it! Aloha from Hawaii. I study voice and am going to start approaching some Sam Cooke and other classic soul, R&B. You and Chris Liepe should team up for some music!
Hi Lucas! :))) you’re really amazing! I was quite blown away by this! Is the sound placed strongly on the palate for this video? I’m trying to learn how to use my falsetto, mixed voice and practical placement for opera singing (not warm ups). Would love it if you could do a tutorial for these please! :)
OMG I think you're the only classical singer who can convincingly sing R&B! You're incredibly talented.
Lol he is one of few others sound like they are trying to blend both genres, and it just doesn't sound right. However I do like the merger of classical & gospel along with classical & jazz. When done correctly they are a beautiful match.
Your voice + a cathedral with immaculate resonance = what I need right now.
You sound great singing R&B. I would love to hear you sing the full versions of these songs!
Take 6!! You sir are cultured. We appreciate you! Thank you for all you do!
A really full and open voice! What a great sound!!! Great info too!!! Great stuff!!!!
thanks!

Hola
What a stunning revelation!!! I wonder where you're at in your journey now as well.
You're killing it! Amazing to be able to sing in both styles so well. Let's hear rock vocals.
This was fascinating. For whatever reason, my voice is naturally highly operatic, but I want to be an R&B singer.
This is so interesting . I’m training in opera and have real difficulty singing any other style of music well
Lucas, I'm a gigging singer of Oldies, Motown, and Classic Rock. This was very beneficial. I've got Boston, Foreigner, Sam & Dave, Jackie Wilson, Gary Puckett, Kansas, Tom Jones and others to cover. They're not Opera, but boy they are tough. Thanks for this.

I would pay to hear you sing either. 💖😁
You just proved the point my good man!!! If one is a well trained singer, singing pop and R&B is a piece of cake.
There are thousands of well trained singers that can mimic well. But how do you stand out to have that extra to make a self sustained career.
He also can try some metal in a concert and after that he can take on a microphone singer Dimash attempt. Why not some growl in concert. Some can do both quite well, live, rock and opera ruclips.net/video/yv6jiqVmmSI/видео.html.
A piece of cake to who? Apart from this guy, very few opera singers can sing anything outside their genre which does not not sound bad.
Well if one was really a well trained singer, singing in general should be a piece of cake...
As a novice with Bel Canto I find your voice and your lessons so inspiring!
And your voice is heavenly wheather it be opera or R&B! Love love love!
You are very kind to say that!! Thank you I appreciate it!

Wow that is amazing I never seen a opra singer sing so soulful
If the late great Aretha Franklin can sing Nessun Dorma (I thought it was great, though the "purists" don't agree with me), then Lucas can sing R&B all he wants.
Aretha did give it a try at Nessun Dorma even though it was ehh...
@@baritoneblazzin1965 you are very kind. I thought AF's Nessun was f***ing horrible embarassing and ludicrous.

Thank you so much. Flavia

And when it comes to an opera singer singing songs from the Great American Songbook, nobody did it better than Eileen Farrell. Your R&B sounds great.
This video was informative and I thoroughly enjoyed it! 😂
Love it. Well done and what fun
Oh you sound very good, i was curious of how your voice would sound in other style, you made my day hehe

It’s DIFFICULT to sing Pop, particularly RnB. You need a voice for it. Lucas pulled it off Great.
