I Take Shitty Photographs

- I Take Shitty Photographs - and so do all your favorite photographers. Here's what's really hiding in those pristine Instagram feeds, why social media's ruining art for everyone, and how my 222,000 photos prove we're all in this mess together. This is a raw (and a bit sweary) look at the reality behind those perfect shots you're comparing yours to.
Do you take shitty photographs? Perhaps this should be my equivalent to 'I SHOOT RAW'. What do you reckon to some merch - lol?
Sat there laughing at the delivery, but you hit the issue with absolute precision. Cheers my friend, you have made my day with this.
Cheers Paul - appreciate it :)
You crack me up! But to your point, I have to sometimes remind my viewers that the photos I post are the select three or four I pulled from the 3,000 frames that I shot at a sporting event. Of those 3,000+ frames, about 1,000 make an initial cull. Then, I eventually whittle those down to the 100 or so that I actually deliver in my galleries to clients. I delete 100s of thousands of images every year.
Thanks Jack - the culling is what gets lost in translation pretty often. :)
Better than the honest take is the honest delivery. Most enjoyable video I've seen in awhile. Instant subscribe.
Thank-you kindly :)
I've been shooting for 32 years; I'm using an entry-level camera and kit lens; my hit rate is decent; I don't post on social media, and i don't care.
Best way to be. :)
The amount of honesty and humor in this video is epic. Thank you so much.
I appreciate it - thankyou :)
I can't work out if I like your photo's or your commentary better! -actually, it doesn't matter, it's all gold.
Thank-you kindly :)
This is almost exactly why I’ve started doing “live streams”. We need more photographers to go live so we can see ALL their photos. 😉. I take lots of shitty photos 👌🏼
It is a trend I think. Thomas Heaton's started doing it, anyway.
🤣🤣 This had me rolling from start to finish. My LR catalog is also filled with $hitty photos. I keep meaning to purge them, but perhaps I should display them instead! 🤣🤣
It's the new trend - the shitty photo club. :)
Ah, social media; the cream doesn't rise to the top, the turds do, as in the loo. Must close that lid before I flush. Thanks Andy, very entertaining and informative.
Mike in Oz
Cheers Mike - very true :)
My favourite is the backside of the lens cover … I’ve lost count of the number of completely black shots I’ve taken … AND no photoshop filters rescue them!
lol yea - there's no coming back from that one. :)
😂 Droll humour, honest (read: sometimes crude) commentary, and spot-on message. Excellent post, Andy!
My name is Bill, and I take shitty photographs too.
Thanks mate - welcome to the shitty photo club. :)
I deliberately post "shitty Photos" and watch the shit storm that occurs.
We should get the hashtag trending :)
I greatly enjoy your humor -such a great way to deliver brutal truths. If I saw you at the pub, I'd gladly by you a pint (even if your government dares to shrink it!).
Thank-you kindly - first round's on me :)
I went ‘cold turkey’ from social media a few weeks ago and rediscovering the joy of photography. Most shots are still crap but don’t feel I’m being judged or compared any longer.
It's liberating, isn't it. :)
Lol you have a unique communication style Andy, that said, you always have a pull no punches point (or points). Keep the great content flowing please
Thanks Geoff, I will :)
What a great therapy video for photographers, thanks Andy. Funny and so true
Thank-you kindly :)
We all take shitty Photos. Thankfully there's the trusty delete fuction. Mind you, I refuse to post on social media.
That's the way :)
this was so awesome, especially as an American, the language/cultural differences between USA and AU made this great
Thanks - two nations divided by a common language :)
The photos I took yesterday made me rethink what I’m doing, except one amazing one - I posted to social media lol
Always a good day when you get a keeper :)
A novel viewpoint, eloquently delivered. Subscribed immediately.
Thanks and welcome. :)
Ten points for using "fecal plume" in your script.
Thank-you kindly :)
Now I find even more satisfaction than before in looking at my shitty self portrait. Thanks Andy.
lol - you and me both mate :)
Thank you, thank you, thank you! I needed to hear this.
No worries - you're welcome!
Brilliant and accurate! Thanks Andy..
Thank-you kindly :)
Haven't laughed so hard in years --literally.
Thank-you :)
lol, brilliant. And dead on. One of many reasons I avoid social media.
Cheers Hanah :)
I take shitty photo's too! Maybe it's a form of introverted graffiti. Saying, I was there. Being there is more important then the photo. Complainers just regret having missed out on their own adventure. 🙂
That's a good philosophy to have ;)
Hahaha, great video... thanks for a light hearted review of all of our collective shitty photographs.
Cheers! Glad you enjoyed it!
Thanks Andy. FWIW, I have 17 five star shots in 70,749 (plus the images plus the images I deleted as not worth any space).
Cheers Shane - we're our own biggest critics :)
Andy, that was great. On point and funny as shit.
Thank-you kindly :)
This is great. Laugh-out-loud funny and making a solid point. My only qualification is that, er, I actually rather liked some of your 'rejects' :-). Oh, and I'm deffo on board for the t-shirt!
Cheers John - see what I can do :)
Ah the stolen humanity. I’ve lost count of the many times I have created a shitty jpeg and then desperately edited the shitty raw file to try and make a masterpiece. It never works. You can’t polish a turd 😊
lol - no you can't - lipstick on a pig as my delightful throwback pub landlord used to say many moons ago.
Mt. Flushmore. :) :) Great subject! I've always assume that most 'bad' photos from professionals would be framing or missing the subject (wildlife, etc). Nice to see the mistakes don't magically disappear with more experience.
Definitely not. :)
I should have watched this earlier....I just traded my Nikon Z9 for a Leica SL2 and my photos are still shitty. At least I can now say I take Shitty Photos on a Leica. Lmao😅😂
Haha - that Leica look!
Loved it!!!
Cheers Ian :)
Great video. Thank you! I"m not sure I would call them shitty photographs. I would call them shitty pictures (those that have not been through post yet.) I say that a picture is 'taken," and a photograph is "created." If a pro depends on getting the shot, then I expect they know their gear and its limitations. The latest cameras have mind-blowing capabilities. So does the AI-enabled photo-editing software. Pretty soon a camera will be optional. I guess it already is. I need to cull through my collection and delete 90% of the crap I have retained in LightRoom.
Thanks William - yes I should probably do the same, but instead the library just keeps getting bigger. :)
Brilliant Andy! That video was so good.
Cheers! :)
Such a funny and helpful video. Many brilliant observations.
Cheers Eric :)
I’m glad I watched that!
Cheers Greg :)
I'll take it a step further but almost all photographs are fairly worthless and not even worth hanging on my wall let alone being printed. Most photographs are relegated to sporting events for news, or other articles of writing to support the words. Or God forbid being a wedding photographer. The anals of photography i'd rather be sliced by a thousand knives while floating in the dead sea. Bless your heart if you are a wedding photographer. I used to do events (large ones) but weddings were the easy bread and butter made up of nightmares to keep the lights going.
I've been doing art shows in my space for past 6 years and always wanted to somehow do a photography show. Only came across one person that MAY have been interesting enough.
I take shitty pictures too, all the time. Each day I ingest them and then pick them apart as to what went wrong, how could I have made a better choice. And more importantly am I applying it the next day and improving. But the image isn't the reason I take these pics. It's to learn the +/- of each of my menagerie of lenses I've accumulated more than my still pictures I'm capturing. Notes are taken, judgments are given and then it's put into use for video... Or cinematography if I want to be snooty about it.
And even moving pictures is not about my lens choice, it's 99% about the story. You could most easily film a great story with a cell phone these days... Or generate it completely with AI here soon.
So why do I go out every day and take pictures? Exercise walking the dog getting my steps in. It's relaxing. It makes you stop to look at something you would have otherwise missed maybe? Conquering the technical aspects sometimes? I do force myself to one lens (prime) a day. So being limited and stuck to that focal length challenges me with subject and framing.
The Art of Zen and Camera Masochism™
Ah yes, the mental health aspects cannot be understated. I did a video on this channel a while back on that very subject and how it greatly helps with my autism/ADHD and also of course in terms of exercise. I often do the one lens rule as well - love having to 'zoom with my feet' when using a prime. :)
@Andyhutchinson I'll have to go back and look for that one, sounds right up my alley.
The lens limitation has been a great study. Going from a Jupiter 12 35mm with a minimum focal length of 1.5m to a Zeiss Jena Pancolar 50mm at 0.45mm min focal. Wide fov and way back to closer and tighter. Nevermind the completely different look of the glass itself. Super light leaky flared out soft lens to a nice crisp lens with great contrast. Going through my Helios 44m/m2/m4/m7 in order is going to be a load of fun.
But I'll take a million shitty shots and sanity over 1 great shot and temporary adoration (likes). I was telling my wife about this video and brought up what was most memorable photo ever from memory. We both said Afghan Girl on NatGeo magazine at same time. That was over 40 years ago. Instagram sunset pics can think about that for a minute. Even Migrant Mother was nearly 90 years ago. Is anyone on Instagram topping Ansel Adams?
Today, I got my new Lomography glass instant camera, because while we can keep hundreds of thousands of pointless digital images, I want to commit $1 to each picture I choose to take and only have 10 available to me in a pack. And I can't post it on Instagram unless I scan it. Maybe I'll stick it on my fridge with a magnet... If it's worthy enough.
And yes, it's also great therapy for the AuDHD mindset. It, pardon the pun, focuses so many aspects into one thing.
Excellent video laughed my guts out. All of my photographs are perfect, if you believe that I have a slightly used opera house for sale 😂😂😂
Sold!
Hi from Uruguay :) l loved your vlog today!! "Mass participation experiment" Wow, that would be a very interesting topic!!!!!! you ticked that idea in my head and now I would love to have your insight about it. Please forgive my grammar mistakes, as I am a spanish speaker . Cheers!
Thank-you kindly - your grammar is just fine :)
Here's my payment for membership into your Shitty Photographers Anonymous. 😊
Woot! Legend! Thanks mate - you're in! ;)
I like your channel Andy, but there is one thing I have noticed. I just wish you would speak your mind a bit more!! You always seem to be holding back!!! Good to see you have lost your orange glow of a few weeks ago...
Thanks mate - yea - the LUT is still a work in progress, because I'm testing out all different lighting configurations and setups, but I'll get there.
This comment is as close to any form of social media as I get.
Best way to be, mate. :)
@@Andyhutchinson You are not wrong!!
So true!
Thank-you :)
