  • LOVING VINCENT is the world’s first fully oil painted feature film. Written & directed by Dorota Kobiela & Hugh Welchman. Coming to Australian cinemas, November 2.
    The film brings the paintings of Vincent van Gogh to life to tell his remarkable story. Every one of the 65,000 frames of the film is an oil-painting hand-painted by 125 professional oil-painters who travelled from all across the world to the Loving Vincent studios in Poland and Greece to be a part of the production. As remarkable as Vincent’s brilliant paintings, is his passionate and ill-fated life, and mysterious death.

      Well, part of the problem is that it's not playing in very many theaters & the ones that are playing it will only have it for about one week. There has been no mainstream advertising either, at least not that I have seen. I've been made aware of it through social media only. It is such a shame, the film is magnificent!!! I am so glad I have kept track of it's status, researched where it would be playing, rounded up my daughter & her friends, then made the fairly long drive to a theater that is showing it. “What am I in the eyes of most people - a nonentity, an eccentric, or an unpleasant person - somebody who has no position in society and will never have; in short, the lowest of the low. All right, then - even if that were absolutely true, then I should one day like to show by my work what such an eccentric, such a nobody, has in his heart. That is my ambition, based less on resentment than on love in spite of everything, based more on a feeling of serenity than on passion. Though I am often in the depths of misery, there is still calmness, pure harmony and music inside me. I see paintings or drawings in the poorest cottages, in the dirtiest corners. And my mind is driven towards these things with an irresistible momentum.”
    Vincent Van Gogh

      @@freshprince69 A position in society, I think, means that there is some positive effect that he can have on that society. Being "somebody who has no position in society" is not someone who cannot contribute to that society, but somebody who believes he cannot. The suggestion is therefore that he thinks he cannot, and therefore is at the lowest of the low.

    • @freshprince69
      @freshprince69 4 года назад +1

      @@blakefong7054 I didn't believe he could not contribute to society. Take this into account; A primitive man can feed a pack of wolves if he desired to. Hence, contributing to their "society" while not being a part of it. I don't think Vincent Van Gogh believed he cannot contribute at all, if he did then he should'nt be able to continue painting.

    • @blakefong7054
      @blakefong7054 4 года назад +11

      @@freshprince69 My point is that the rank perceived and the rank actual is altogether different. Although Van Gogh probably contributed to his society in some minor ways (despite his professional and practical failings), his perceived inability to contribute to society is what's important. He perceives that he is at the lowest of the low because the artist figure in his society is taken as perhaps one of the least important figures available. He spends all of his time painting rather than, say, innovating technology or helping others. Painting, by being an inherently selfish art (as with most authentic art) focuses upon the individual. The contrast, then, is between the society as a whole and the artist figure as an individual. According to conventional standards, he is someone who stands outside of society simply because he cannot imagine himself as a contributor to the group, but spends most his time endeavouring to improve his own art.

In an art style that must have been a PAIN IN THE ASS to animate, and it looks absolutely amazing.They stayed true to Van Gogh's style. and I am mexican, I live in Mexico. So don't pull the race card on me about under representation. The Book of Life also brought light to Día de Muertos and mexican culture and it's not being shoved down our throats. There is much more going on, Pixar always, always wins. Don't get me wrong, Coco probably had it's hardships while in production as well. But if every year it's going to be the same company winning the exact same fucking category every year, then there is no reason to watch the Oscar's anymore.

    I watched this film several months ago. Thought it would be nice to put down some notes here.
    The story focuses on Van Gogh’s death. The protagonist is a yellow-jacket wearing man who was an acquaintance of his. The entire film rests upon this man’s two-to-three-day journey to find out the “true” cause of Van Gogh’s death. It uses the man’s investigation as the context to fill us in about the life of Van Gogh.
    The idea of using the yellow-clad man’s journey as the story line is interesting. There are two reasons that I think this is a clever decision.
    The first one is practical. The yellow-clad man is made the protagonist because we cannot simply write a story of Van Gogh as the protagonist directly. That would require way too much understanding about Van Gogh. But who understands Van Gogh?
    The second one is emotional, and it is the more important one. We today regard Van Gogh as a genius. But he was viewed as a lunatic and was ostracized during his time. If we really are to understand the tragedy of Van Gogh, we must understand how he was viewed by others. And having those people speak for themselves about Van Gogh is the most direct and powerful way to achieve the goal. It’s not just that these people were casually talking about Van Gogh in the film; they were being explicitly asked to give their opinions on Van Gogh. These people gave deliberated responses. Through their own words, I can sense their hatred towards and affection for Van Gogh. And this is the important function of the yellow-clad man.
    To understand the tragedy of Van Gogh, we focus on people who he came into contact with. This is what the film is so good at about: we develop a sense of remorse for how we, perhaps unfairly, treat people we don’t understand. But at the same time, this is the limitation of the film: it is remorseful, and not optimistic enough.
    According to the film, Van Gogh started drawing at the age of 28 and died at 35. He was relentlessly drawing during these eight years. Such a person must be very passionate about what he was doing. And I have the feeling that Van Gogh loved life and nature; a Google image search reveals that most of his paintings are about the natural landscape. I believe Van Gogh was optimistic about life and nature’s creation. (Could that be the reason why he cut off his ear and gave it away as a present?)
    To understand the optimism of Van Gogh, we need to focus directly on the artist. But given how little we know about Van Gogh, the film’s not having enough optimism is a limitation I can live with. And in fact, perhaps the director realized this too, and he compensated by making a girl, who liked Van Gogh, lamented, towards the end of the film, that the yellow-clad man should focus more on Van Gogh’s life than his death.

He didn't leave us any reason or note, he didn't clean his room, and he made plans with his friends for the following week. He was a single street away. Sometimes people just do things, sometimes for reasons we won't understand. I didn't know this before any of this happened. It makes you understand with great sorrow how unjust things can be. We know Vincent was Ill, and today we understand that without treatment or medicine this is what happens. It's unfortunate, a deep tragedy.

God, did i wanted to cry. the film is so beautifully stunning that every frame could be taken up on wall for a decoration or an exhibit. vincent is such a pure soul and that only was tampered by the cruel life he had led. if he were to be alive today, i just hope it would be the same as that doctor who episode where he’s in. he deserves the present support and the success that he never got to enjoy during his time.

    this movie is amazing
    Besides the phenomenal fact that they hand painted eaCH FRAME FOR THE ENTIRE MOVIE,, THEY DELIVERED WELL WITH THE STORY-TELLING, not only throught the stunning visuals, but generally how they moved through the movie with the plot and transitions.
    Whether or not it was intentional, I love how well viewers can tag along with Armand to find pieces of the story and figure out what the hell happened. The plot was seamless from character to character and scene to scene. It fits so well with how uncertain certain parts of history are, like Six the Musical's take on the stories of King Henry VIII's six wives for example. From stories told so very long ago, we can only go with the fragments left behind for us to pick up and decide which angle we choose to present it. We get different fragments from different witnesses of the past, depending on how they see it, with their own biases and parts they choose to hide and emphasize, and we'll never know for sure what happened to the dead man with only town gossip and few sources with different stories to guide us by.
    I felt something on this one. The closure and appropriate way of ending it was amazing. With the many movies and shows we have access to these days, it's rare to feel something enough to blankly stare at the end credits while you process the beauty of what you just watched.

If he were alive today he'd cry, and I'm not sure if it'd be out of happiness or existential horror that he isn't even the most impressive artist of his own paintings.

Loving Vincent was a masterpiece that brought life, compared to the yearly commercial childish Disney movies, children believing in underworlds. This is the last time I watch Academy Awards as a credential merit. Loving Vincent was unique, original, and the best movie of Animation in the last period for many real critics that appreciates some value these days, the world should resume to beauty, not to poor local politics.

I started giving up on the Academy, when they chose Frozen over The Wind Rises. I lost hope for the Academy when Big Hero 6 won against Kaguya and Song of the Sea.

      Not every Disney film is childish or bland. The year Beauty and the Beast was nominated as the 1st animated best picture, I was all for it. But so many of the "live" actors had a shit fit over it and were openly, IMHO, making fun of it every time they had to announce any nomination it got. Aladdin was fantastic as was Lion King and the Hunchback of Notre Dame. The first 20 minutes of UP and I was in tears. WALL-E was brilliant. But I still believe frame for frame Loving Vincent has been a breathe of much needed fresh air in the CGI world of animation and both kids and adults can find something to love about it.

I ended up watching a different movie which I couldn’t remember if my life depended on it. We travelled through France but also Italy. We saw works of art and buildings that were testaments to the beauty and inspiration of humanity. Even remembering these, the most beautiful thing I saw that week was on my way home. I scrolled past that movie again. This time I stopped because I vaguely remembered my friend mentioning it a few days earlier. I was absolutely captured by the beauty of the film from its story to its portrayal. I became fascinated by Van Gogh, his art, his story, and his passion. This film gave me a glimpse into the life of one of the most amazing artists and people I have ever known. He has been one of my greatest inspirations.

    This movie shall shine just like every other Vincent's painting. What a loving tribute, it deep and so much moving as if I'm there witnessing the life and event happening, in the end I couldn't stop my emotions pouring out. A true masterpiece. Vincent may you live forever and huge thanks hug to every artist who has been involved in making such a lively film.

    One of the top 3 most amazing films of all time. Easily. Not only is it visually sublime, but the storyline is powerful and poignant.
