Right? I picked this up on used vinyl today. Chose this specifically because I had 2 friends who recently passed who were much bigger fans of Waylon than myself, and I’m now seeing why. I picked this album specifically because I’m such a big and picky fan of Buddy Holly’s. It’s hard to do a Buddy Holly cover well. I’d never heard Waylon’s covers before, but knew the back story of him giving up his seat on the plane that crashed, and killed Holly. Waylon pays so much respect to Buddy here, he covers Buddy well, and stays true to his own style as well. It’s a perfect mix, and hearing it for the first time ever today on vinyl, and then realizing that I own that, it felt like Waylon was playing live in my room, and also felt like I was a kid hearing Buddy again for the first time, in the style of Waylon! Incredible.

Well considering both Waylon and buddy were fans and friends of Elvis and Waylon and Elvis shared multiple songs I’d say there are 3 kings and they all influenced each other.

Waylon had never released any music by the time buddy died. Waylon and buddy we’re good friends and Waylon played bass for buddy when the crickets left. The day buddy died him and Waylon were eating hotdogs and buddy told Waylon he he was scared to fly because he gave up his seat to the bopper. So Waylon joked we’lol I hope your ole plane crashes and buddy said I hope your ole bud freezes up. That was the last thing Waylon said to buddy and it haunted him for the rest of his life.

Saw Waylon & the Crickets in Owings Mills, Maryland in the mid-80's. The Crickets opened the show and were just starting to play some Holly tunes when Waylon quietly joined them on stage without being introduced. The place was shaking when everyone realized there was a 4th Cricket out there pickin' and singing.

Waylon Jennings and Buddy Holly were friends. He was once in Holly's band on a touring gig. After Holly died he did some of his songs in tribute and also did them with the Crickets.

"On a touring gig"... yeah he was on Buddy's FINAL touring gig The Winter dance Party tour! That night Jennings and Buddy were just messin with each other when Buddy said to him "I hope your ass freezes on the bus" and Waylon replied "I hope your plane crashes". He felt guilty for that, for years after.
