Remember seeing this years ago when I was a kid back in the early 70s. Bought back a lot of good memories! Can't beat Rod Serling as a narrator! Great documentary, great series!
i love hearing Rod Serling, his voice to me often sounds sarcastic, agitated, perhaps even slightly angry, but obviously not so - its as if when sat in the studio he might be thinking, really, do i actually have to read this stuff, i have better things to do you know - but yes very distinctive - and as for Jacques, bless him, can you hear the Peter Sellers character of Inspector Clouseau, the name even sounds similar to Cousteau, i wonder how much of Cousteau played its part in the creation of the Clouseau character haha
I watched this as a kid. I had been used to the notion that octopus were aggressive monsters but I learned much fascinating stuff from this show. Primarily, I learned that they are gentle, intelligent, curious creatures. I just finished watching “My Octopus Teacher” on Netflix. If you like this, you should watch that. After watching only a few minutes of this, I’m really struck by the different approaches of the researchers. These guys are really rough with the octopus, yanking them out of their dens and such. The guy on Netflix patiently observes, gaining the octopus’s trust until it comes out of its own accord. And he does all of that with no breathing apparatus.
The fact that Rod Sterling, creator and iconic voice of *The Twilight Zone*, is narrating the voiceover for this episode feels especially fitting... the Ocean even has a depth range named The Twilight Zone, every bit as surreal and marvelous as the show, and very few of its inhabitants match the vibe better than the many species of Octopus! XD
this was one episode i do remember from my childhood - and ever since any programs showing off the intelligence of the Octopus has always interested me - another program had a larger tank with clear perspex divisions, entry points and closures, the octopus going from end to the other to get a food reward (no electric shocks thankfully) the octopus could easily repeat over and over, and then an entry point was closed, the octopus not able to get through, sits back and thinks, he will get his reward simply by going over the top, not only clever with intelligence but out witting its human captives so the black ink expelled to evade encounters is well known, but how much can it make, can it repeat over and over without ever running out?
Very cool that the diver saved the octopus when he saw he was suffering. The idea that we as humans have no right to intervene sometimes is silly and ridiculous. We are the ones who make meaning in the first place.
The Cousteau family has been my inspiration. This is a video I made about his Illustrator: ruclips.net/video/ZY8yg8jO768/видео.html and two interviews with him: ruclips.net/video/OoVGGYTtYQs/видео.html ruclips.net/video/ETUDbO2enbA/видео.html I think you will like them.
I think this is Mazatlan or Mexicali harbor, and the woman could be Cindy Von doves the Octopus garden,a new species from The MIT masso you anograghy 1960 s or 70:s testing Carbon dioxide.
Actor Rod Sterling who navigates this short, ate at a restaurant serving Octopus that had had been contaminated with thy in Mexicali Mexico. Shortly, after navigating Mr. Sterling consumed ashad a ssss in the speech. Apparently, it put a hole in his throat. We don't know what the outcome was but better luck next time.

Rod Serling & Jacques Cousteau. Does it ever get better??? Two distinct, iconic voices.

I would likewise recommend The Soul of an Octopus by Sy Montgomery. Great book.
Best episode ever

I'd like to be under the sea in an octopus's garden in the shade.
Octopus are incredible animals
I remember this episode before I knew the name of the show.
So do I, I must have been really young, but still remember when the octopus makes his escape from the ship.
