Great virtual field trip. Who "delivers" your coffin? Does the studio just send two roadies and a van to your house? I figured you had to have a session man van or truck for local sessions and maybe would have to carefully "ship" your stuff anywhere else. If your gear gets picked up and taken to local sessions that's awesome session man treatment. Does this only happen in Music City, LA, and NY or could a Charlotte NC session man expect to meet his gear at the studio rather than carry it personally? I reckon it's case by case...
There are several cartage companies here in Nashville that handle the needs of all the major session players. I have been with the same guy for many years…Richie Cherry from Soundcheck Nashville. He is the best and I’m so proud and happy to have him.
Old warehouses are the perfect place for recording studios and ax murderers.😂 The acoustics are great in every room for an echo scream.👌 Very cool place.🤙
wow, what a great place, I love this 70ties style stuff. The thing nowadays is: you can work on old tape machines and at the same time have the advantages of the digital world
I love your studio tours! Even though I have spent most of my past 30 years working or owning commercial studios I never tire of seeing others...especially in Nashville!
In 1979 I was 24 and it was the USSR. How could I then imagine that someone would show a studio in the USA, tell and play this music. Thank you Tom, thank you Homeskoolin and thank you RUclips!
Wow , Tom ,That's a beautiful a studio as ive ever seen. Very very cool space. i love these guys that have built these places up from the ground and made them work. All power to you all.
OMG! I almost cried when I saw the JH-24!! Didn’t know Mara was a person. Rates may be good but, jeez- the cost of tape!! I miss getting a mini break while we waited for the tape to rewind.
Watching this, and thinking on a recent thought you’d shared about pairing down on the “non-official volumes”. Figure if you’re entertaining a thought like that, there is a reason, and it makes perfect sense. But man, this type of content is THE shit, wonderful insight today, documentary grade material for future generations. No idea what it might cost in time and money to archive this material for public consumption, but…. it would be cool to have some sorta “Afterskoolin’” access. That being said, many thanks, always.
You can't replace that element of people interacting together in a room creativity by recording at home and sending takes. I think it is so important to creativity to keep these "temples" in business.
These are the wonderful nuggets that are nice to revisit every now and then. You are documenting a side of music I’ve only ever read about and would never (ever) have the chance to see otherwise. I look forward to the field trips as much as the kitchen classroom. Thanks Tom
Goosebumps! At one point in time in the 80s, I ran the mastering machines and a series of 12'" "pancakes machines" for a company called Custom Tape Dupilicators off of Thompason lane part-time at night when they were covered up with orders. I could easily copy thousands of cassette tapes in a night. Once the 2" master was all spliced and set up for the correct song order, I fed the signal to 16-24 or so pancake slave machines at high speed. Then the pancakes (0.15 "cassette tapes} were then cut to length and wound onto a cassette cartridge, labeled and packaged for retail sale - The good ole analog days!
@501chorusecho did I miss something is there talk about you deleting some of your videos? gotta gimme time to do a mass download please before you do please. i re-watch alot of you videos id hate to lose that .
Hey Buko. So cool. Reminds me a bit of this old all analog studio an old band I was in during the 80’s recorded our demo. My amp exploded and I found this cool HiWatt combo in the corner under a blanket. I asked if I could use it and at first the cats that owned the place didn’t want to let me. I eventually convinced them. Turns out they had acquired it from The Hit Factory and it was the amp that John Lennon had used to record all his guitar tracks for Double Fantasy and Milk and Honey! Pretty cool, huh? Your pal in Boston, Darin
@ 3:09 I used to have an old Wurlitzer like this 'Brown' and I'd break reeds left and right... (...'cause it's 1970 ish and I dunno WTF I yam doin') Does it have a tiny tube amp built in? I luv these mini-tours... Thanx mang
Nice! As with most things about Larry, he associates with folks who are passionate and good at what they do (evidenced in many of the videos that may be deleted) The Gruhn’s crew, Guthrie, Ebo, Gordon, Blackbird and the list goes on. Definitely a no hack zone- Larry won’t abide a hack. Thanks for sharing
Hey Uncle Larry.. seen all 250 and loved em all! Does cartage include any guitar setup checks or anything like that? .. ever pluck one out of the coffin and it's drifted a bit?
Hey Uncle Larry.. I know its been a minute, but could you share any stories from your sessions on the Doobie Brothers "Southbound" album? Its one of my faves and you rocked it pretty good! Thanks
What an inspiring place to make music 1979 must be. Thanks for sharing, Unc! Hey, I have been playing along with Plexi Soul. Both the Standard issue and HomeSKoolin' versions. I was wondering if you might impart some of your infinite wisdom onto a lowly bedroom player, such as myself? If there is one word I should keep in the back of my mind while playing along, what might that word be? Thanks TB! Can't wait for my Vinyl to arrive!
You could just recite the mantra that got me through my 20s and 30s…”get the ass…get the drugs..get the cool old guitar…” over and over and over Basically the only thoughts I had for a few decades… It worked
@@501chorusecho HA! Well I got the ass (and the kids to show for it), had the all the drugs, and my 78 deluxe is pretty cool....so I guess I should move to Nashville, now 🤣 Thanks Unc! Take care, man.
@@501chorusecho I in no way meant to minimize the artform and technical prowess of a music engineer. I was just curious if you had picked up the knowledgebase and or skillset over the many years of studio work.
@@501chorusecho As true as it is, that's funny right there IDC what you say. 😂😜🤣 And if that's a "MCI" console I see, it's a classic killer board to work on, unless y'all are working with Pro-Tools instead, which is cool too? 🤔 Either way have a good time & lay it down with that special sauce you put on it my friend. 🤘😉🤘 ☮️
I'm Jealous!! I'd like to know how you got into the position you're in. You're obviously extremely talented but it's not always that easy to get to where you are. Did someone magically discover you or did you bang on doors and all that. I started gigging at 12 years old in the early 60's. I had one lucky break and was offered a job in a touring Hawaiian Show Band (early 70's) of all things, it paid very well and I traveled everywhere. I always played weekends and more while working a full time job. I worked clubs, parties and all the shitty bars . Once in a while a good job or blues festival but man you're awesome. Everyone you've worked with and all, man.... I'm Jealous.
I don't know if you're into what Kirk Fletcher does but it turns out he's had a stroke and is recovering from it. I feel bummed out for the guy. He's such a unique blues guitarist

I remember when Chris bought that place. Ask him if he still has the reverb room.
The chamber way in the back is no longer setup. We use the long hallway now. Dang- that was a long time ago!!!

MAN..!! We had most of that stuff back then… I guess foresight wasn’t my strong suit…😩
That's crazy. The things like old guitars, amps, everyday cars that are more valuable today than a new car or new guitar or amp.
