    For being a rough model, beautiful work Bud.

    Thank you for this video. You showed me how to correct some of my problems while planking. I am building an RC 1 meter model as my first boat. This is a test run before I start my goal of building a model J boat.

      As you might have guessed, building a model prior to the full size boat is money in the bank. Not only do you get a dry run of the building experience but you can also use it to figure out material requirements. Take some time to shoot a little video and take pictures of the process because I guarantee you’ll come back to revenue them later.

    I thought that building a full size boat was tough and I've only build a small skiff! That model is unreal Mark and meticulous. I am looking at doing a Pygmy kayak this summer after the virus passes and I just hope that I can do it the justice that you have in this model so fare. The finished model is beautiful. Take care, stay safe and stay well. Thank yo for the video.

    I'm curious what wood you're using? I don't think I've heard it mentioned in the videos about this so far, but could be wrong. Mostly interested in what wood the strips are made from, and later what the lighter veneer is.

      The planking is Alaskan yellow cedar inner layer and sapelle mahogany outer layer. All the longitudinal framework and deck structure is Sitka spruce and the remaining elements are occume mahogany plywood. Bulkheads and sub-deck.

    I like the model build and find what you are doing interesting. I was just wondering though: are you planning to finish that lovely little dory sometime?

    • @Nomadboatbuilding
      @Nomadboatbuilding  4 года назад

      Bruce Millar The Dory videos will keep coming but I want this series to keep pace with the activities in the shop. One more model video coming and then I’ll switch back to the dory build.

    I’d like to ask where you got that mini hand plane from?

    • @Nomadboatbuilding
      @Nomadboatbuilding  3 года назад +1

      Hi Erik. I got that plane from Lee Valley Tools. They have a whole range of miniature tools. They are quite well made.

      @@Nomadboatbuilding thank you for the info, I don’t build large boats but I do build model ships and that would be very handy to have, I do like watching the boat builders on RUclips, and just started watching this one. It relaxes me. Good job on the vids and the build

    You Malmsten Boats that the drawings are minimal. Are you referring to the plans offered by Malmsten Boats

    • @Nomadboatbuilding
      @Nomadboatbuilding  4 года назад

      Yes. I'm not knocking Malmsten's design or drawings but by minimal I am referring to the fact that they are not dictating any construction details and the full basic sets of lines and offsets are not all included. However there are full size templates for the stations, rudder and ballast keel plus a sail plan. In theory you don't absolutely need the full lines to move ahead on the project with what he has given you. It's just not a typical set of plans intended for the home builder in which all the details are laid out for you.

    Great job. This is a scale model- are the strips to scale too as far as thickness and width go? Is there any difficulty with final fairness where those feather edges land between “frames”?

    • @Nomadboatbuilding
      @Nomadboatbuilding  4 года назад +1

      They are eyeballed to a relative scale. For the most part it faired out pretty good. The planking was so thin though, that I glued a few patches of fibreglass onto the backsides to tie it together better. I would have been a little better off making them thicker with an eye toward fairing later.

    Nice work. Do you know where l can purchase a drafting spline like yours ?

    • @Nomadboatbuilding
      @Nomadboatbuilding  4 года назад

      I have no idea. I got mine back in boat school over twenty years ago. The old timers used wood though. They would give them different tapers to change up how they bent.
