I think if you're doing a separate rye bracket, I'd personally pick 2 controls (barely legal and MGP 95/5) at higher proofs that could compete and are available and affordable. For a barely legal rye, Pikesville or Rare Breed Rye may work better than Knob Creek 7Y. For high rye, I'd personally choose something like Sagamore Cask Strength because I always see them on the shelves and they aren't single barrels unlike most MGP sourced rye. Could also do something cheaper like Stellum or James E. Pepper.
It's in my cupboard. To me this one shines as a mixer. Like you said, a great value for the price point. Age stated rye at 7 years for this price point is great. As a 'barely legal' rye though, it doesn't really stand out in the world of ryes.
The first rye I was certain I liked was Knob Creek. I've been meaning to get another bottle (so much whisky, so little time and money), and this tells me I need to move it up the priority list. 🙂 4:53 IIRC Knob Creek is a barely legal rye, so there isn't a huge difference between it and a high rye bourbon. I've noticed that Bulleit bourbon, which is a high rye recipe, tastes a lot like Bulleit rye, which is definitely high rye (95%). But the low rye mash bill of the Knob Creek rye makes it more like a bourbon.
Whether it has been bourbon or rye, Knob Creek has always been a big winner for me, making it possiblly the most reliable "brand name" in American spirits for me.
The Knob Creek 115 proof store picks are so good, I had to pick tis one up when I saw it. Really good . Great video.
Just waiting for mine to come all the way across to Brazil!
Knob Creek 7 is one of my favorite ryes and it’s a great bonus to have it available for a very reasonable price.
Fell in love with the single barrel Beam Ryes several years ago, probably my FAV RYEs. The 100 proof is hard to beat as well.
Thank you both 🥃

Just picked up a 8 year single barrel store pick of this at 115 proof, it’s pretty good
Wonder how this compares to the JD Bonded rye?
Knob Creek doesn’t disappoint. I like it. Wish they made a 750ml of it.
