Yes. In the Laeiszhalle. The Organ piece. It is different on cd. I hope he records more Bach in the future. Thank you for reminding us constantly of him. Have a merry Christmas :)
@@lunagardvonbingen I studied this piece for an examination and I found the fugue more difficult😵. Both the prelude and fugue requires sufficient technical ability. The prelude needs precise and even playing, which is quite straightforward to practice. Whereas the fugue has a contrapuntal texture, requiring the performer to execute all three voices simultaneously.
Here is a pianist whose playing one can recognize, like Horowitz or Glenn Gould; yet one doesn't find him obtrusive. A very pleasant surprise to "discover" him. A great talent. Thank you for uploading.

I am learning this piece; I doubt I'll ever can that clean, crisp tone Vikingur manages to retain throughout. Marvelous performance. I keep playing it over and over again listening to every note. Then I play it again. Then I applaud with everyone else.
Just perfect control of all three voices and also don’t have the same exact tone throughout. As in pay attention closely and hear the varying dynamics of each voice throughout. Specifically when it turns to E Flat in the beginning, nice second voice (is, specifically what I’m aiming for). Plays with perfect care. This is the skill we’re all reaching for
How the hell does one get this sort of sound out of the piano? This is the most amazing rendition I've ever heard of the prelude in c minor and the performance as a whole is so beautifully articulated and transparent...
It’s a combination of the acoustics of mainly the piano and the room as well as the excellent performance. It takes both in unison for perfection. Barenboim has great recordings of pieces; I think he has the best acoustics available
He highlights the baroque era perfectly, his articulation representing quite like a harpsichord and organ, which is possibly where Bach made this piece for. Beautiful interpretation!
In addition to this masterful execution, which is reminiscent of Stanislav Richter, the piano and the sound recording (live!) are pure wonder. Steinways often tend to sound metallic, this one not at all...
Thank you so much I really really enjoyed watching you playing this with such amazing passion and sensitivity too. You are quite Brilliant too. Please stay safe and well too xxx Mags
Funny, I felt the exact opposite of that! I found this interpretion more "scholar" and neat, but quite cold, and Gould's one much more emotionally overwhelming. Him lowering the tempo and playing staccato gives, to me, a dramatic impulse, each note ticking like a clock or a heartbeat that gets more and more disturbed by dissonant notes like a mechanism that gets rusty.. that's funny and interesting to witness everyone's feeling about that masterpiece!
@@kangchenjunga591 True! And I just keep wondering about how it was played at Bach's time, considering the musical devices then. Couldn't play legato for it was on an harpsichord, so Gould's regular staccato might be more accurate than we think!
Agree - for my taste (to borrow a phrase from Martin Frost) Gould's interpretation sounds quite stodgy and for me draws attention to the fact that the music was not written for piano - but maybe that is just because we are so used to the 'traditional' interpretations?
Have you ever seen Vikingur Ólafsson live? What was your favourite performance? Let us know.

No never. But I would like to. I love Bach and this sounds great so this could be a favorite. But one of many. Ólafsson plays fantastic.
If he comes to Peru, I will definitely see him.
I saw him live in the Berlin Konzerthaus with a pretty poor Mozart c-minor concerto.
Last year in La Roque d'Antheron playing Debussy and Rameau. Especially his Debussy was fantastic!
Keeping that clarity and synchronisation at 135 bpm of the prelude is incredible. Well done.
This is one of those rare times the prelude is harder than the fugue

About a foot taller,not Russian,and certainly not a composer of great 20th century symphonies...😊
Apart from that...😊
Yes😂😂
Going by appearances? haha
I think he’s literally talking by appearances cause he calls him young lol nice one 😂
Why? Just because he's white and wears glasses?
Wonderful! The prelude played in one breath yet so transparent and with an excellent arcticulation profile.

Exactly
I'm not sure I 've ever heard a piano sound like that (i.e. like the beginning of this prelude). It was phenomenal
So much texture in the Fugue!! Errggggggh I'm crying 😍
So much clarity and precision. Good luck to the performer! Speed was spot on
Good “luck”?
I think luck is all he’s got, in a GOOD way

This is an amazing performance of this particular prelude and fugue. I loved how musical and technical he was!
Amazing!! Bach would be proud!!!
Impressive gradual acceleration in the fugue, I like it.
I began to expect a rather dramatic pace, then it ended!
Do you have any examples of this, going from normal or slow, to presto, imperceptibly?
In baroque music you generally want to stick to the original tempo but his change was quite subtle, so I don’t think too many of us would mind
