- A new BBC drama about the Battle of Hastings will feature a diverse group of actors.
Historians question the application of 'colour-blind' casting to a period 'when Britain was at its least multicultural'.
Author and historian Martyn Whittock joins Talk’s Julia Hartley-Brewer to discuss this further.
Martyn says it would be just as wrong to cast a white European as Zulu King. "Most of us would say that's just not appropriate".

@thomasvarley380 congrats now why does that matter if its a historical fiction that exists to get people interested in your heritage? Adding color just means potentially more people who care about skin color as much as you who are not the same color as you may be inspired and interested in your history. How is that a bad thing, now if they put a documentary tag or claim it's 100% accurate there is a problem but if it's clearly a fiction why does it matter.

I really hate that no one makes historically accurate period shows and movies now. There's nothing wrong with having an all-white cast to show what England looked like in the past. That's the whole point of a period drama. 🤦🏻♀️

There were over six hundred years between the Roman withdrawal and Hastings, plenty of time for any residual black gene to have dissipated. The reason I stoped watching Father Brown, suddenly a village in the Cotswold in the 1940s was 50% black and brown, so I just switched it off.
I love this show, so I watch it still though I know its ridiculous to see more than one African person in such village in UK before 70s.

There is an effort to mislead the young and ignorant, with their short attention spans they just see headlines and blindly accept. It's happening in books, museums etc., and is a disgrace, an insult to our heritage which has to be stopped.
Look we know Winston the Conqueror and his lesbian army defeated Gay King Harold in 1066 routing his Zulu regiment and Baza bachi dancing boys.
The country has always been multicultural as will be explained when Black History Month rolls around again.
I personally find the credibility of any film/show I watch evaporate immediately as soon as I see some attempt at casting along studio inclusivity policy grounds. Realism used to be something films, especially war films, strived for, but that goal is no longer pursued. Not just because of corporate policy but also because studios/networks get government rebates and funding etc for having diverse cast regardless of fake and unbelievable their films now look..
The other problem is that the other colour is mostly black, not Indian or Chinese, and the proportion is far in excess of the position in the UK.
If you wish to put in fantasy, write fiction, set in another part of the world, rather than appropriating the history and culture of western societies.
Bring it on.

There's zero requitement for people to "see themselves on screen." That's a petty, narcissist issue for self centred people lacking confidence or unable to understand entertainmemt. Having said that, you should obviously have a broad representation if youre doing a modern day show set in a diverse city, but don't shoehorn ethnic minorities in to remote Scottish towns, or in to historical shows, if they weren't part of that.
I don't normally watch period dramas but Wolf Hall (set in the reign of Henry VIII) was one of the best TV series I've ever seen. Unfortunately, the new series filming now has (so I've read) gone down exactly this road of diverse casting. Not of the main figures, fortunately, because the actors need to be the same as before: Mark Rylance, Damian Lewis etc. But I'll bet that a lot of the periperhal cast are now "diverse". If anyone here hasn't seen the Critical Drinker's videos where he talks about THE MESSAGE forced down our throats in films and TV, go and watch them. Genuinely hilarious - they should be required viewing for anyone working at the BBC.

I've been studying the Anglo Saxon period for the best part of 25 years. The only black things back then were charred wood and some flags!
I won't be watching this. I normally lap up any and every screen depiction of this period. But i can't suspend my knowledge for the sake of politics! The BBC should NOT be allowed to corrupt our history. Why is 'cultural appropriation' ok for anyone else but white people? This will be total and utter crap!

My family history records show two ancestors fought at the beach at Hastings. A father and son team brawled so well that the son was given to marry a pretty young cousin of the conqueror. 2k years later and they get portrayed by Ubungu and Abdul /facepalm

@@alanbeaumont4848 Ha, i guess you are technically correct, it was fought a few miles from the beach landings, after all who wants to fight on sand or have their back to the sea. British armies were busy with other troubles at the far end of the country, so us Normans had chance to march a few miles into a good position. Not sure if there were any piquets or skirmishing actually on the beach, i don't think so, maybe a tiny handful of local scouts were killed. As far as my family story, i think it 's true as it's no fairy-tale, the records go on to describe how the family lost everything some century later backing the wrong successor, normally in fictional accounts, things turn out a lot sweeter and neater.

There are huge numbers of people who work in the costumes, wigs, scenery and props making sure that everything is as close as it can be to accurate. Painstaking effort to make sure the wall covererings are correct for the decade, and that the wigs are made in the right style. You only have to look at the tapestries from that time. They were all white. Bet they'd have coloured one or two in if it were possible. Notice too how when talking of historical events they say 'we'. When it suits them they pretend it's all of us.

Some years ago I've started to watch a new "Beowulf" TV show based on the story from 5-6th century, and from famous English poem from 10th century. So I was very interested in a new adaptation of it, esp as I've seen all 5 of those previous not-very-well adaptations :D First scene - the hero returns to his village on horsback. Second scene - the hero enters the gate and meets... an Indian teenage girl working as a blacksmith... in a vikings village of 6th century. Right. That was the end of my watching the show :D
One of the problems with diversity picks is that they are often selected ONLY because of their race, and may be wrong for the part for other reasons, like lack of acting ability for instance or simply not being right for the part. That has happened a lot in BBC dramas. A prime example was Freema Agyema, who was fine in Doctor Who but terrible in Little Dorrit. Totally wrong for the part, their for one reason only.

It's about correctly representing the character in question. You wouldn't have a cockney playing Einstein, A German playing Martin Luther King. When watching a particular film or documentry we want to see a close account of the events. It's PC gone too far into the absurd.

Stratford festival in Ontario has attempted the color blind route. Well the other than white color blind. Unfortunately seeing black actors playing characters in Private Lives or On The Importance Of Being Earnest. Just didn’t work for me and I stopped going. We just can’t imagine black people as upperclass or aristocrats in those British periods. Similarly, having Stallone play Mohammed Ali wouldn’t work for me either.

I am 68 now and live in NE England, I never saw a black person, in real life, until i was 22 years old!, and even then i had to go to Lichfield to actually meet one!
I'm from Sunderland, within 3 years the city centre is nearly half black. I know some Africans and they're decent people but our immigration system is still a p*ss take, people will take advantage of.
